If I can’t carry a weapon I would not volunteer for neighborhood watch.

    • Wellarmed

      Well said!

    • Mark Are Reynolds Ⓥ

But I’ll let all my neighbors know that I’m out wandering the streets for exercise.

  • Byron

Zimmerman wasn’t on duty. LEOs are citizens, too. Neighborhood watch members have every right to carry and lawfully defend themselves as any other law-abiding citizen. Based on a lot of news I’ve seen lately, it’s the cops that far too often are the vigilantes with guns.

  • Denis George Miller

I am sure there will be lots of volunteers now!!

  • William Smith

I guess the 2nd Amendment does not cover Sanford, Florida?

So it’s ok for me or some thug to walk the streets carrying a firearm, but not a volunteer trying to watch out and keep his neighbors safe?

Sanford should change its name to Wonderland, up is down there.

  • CatGman

I suppose the volunteers should just drop out of the neighborhood watch and stay home to protect their family’s and property.

  • merryinfidel

Since when does a “City Ordinance” trump federal and state law? Florida law clearly identifies locations where concealed carry holders cannot legally carry. Being on “neighborhood watch” is NOT one of those locations…

  • ddoug

let us hope the city of sanford has deep pockets. the law suit should drain a good portion of their rainy day fund. when will they read the second amendment before they try and impose such sillyness?

  • disqus_mo8ewPYVck

GOOD. I own a Shorin-Ryu Karate Dojo. Maybe I can get more students now.

    • Mark Are Reynolds Ⓥ

And what good will that do against a slime ball like Treyvon who might have a 9mm? Are you going to teach your students Remo Williams tricks?

      • disqus_mo8ewPYVck

I never teach students or anyone else third-rate movie stuntman tricks and anyone who does is ripping you off. There are a million and one situations, therefore it is a million to one chance. I absolutely guarantee that if you stick a g un or wxeapon in my face or back and don’t xsxhoot me in three seconds, it will be a very long time before you hold anything, let alone a xg un, again.

  • hippybiker

The Police chief of Sanford is going to get his A$$ handed to him for violating Florida State law. Only the State legislature can regulate who carries where.

  • daveH234

Sanford has already shown their hand as to their backward thinking ideology. They mishandled the whole scenario from the start. Now they continue down another road to idiocy.

  • gelliott

I’m suspicious that the police union supports this move to put pressure on the population to support hiring more police officers and raising their pay. Not that that’s all bad, but by itself may not be a good reason (possibly even unconstitutional) to ban citizens from carrying firearms for self-defense.

I believe the right thing for the police department to do would be to train and deputize neighborhood watch participants to reduce the risk of unnecessary shootings. In the present case, there is no assurance that even a police officer wouldn’t have shot Trayvon if he had jumped on the police officer as I believe he did George. So preventing George from carrying a firearm in this case might have only resulted in George getting physically beat up (assaulted and battered) really bad, or worse killed by Trayvon.

The goverment does not care about the constitution or the people of america. They have been taking away are freedom and liberities for many years now and the know the american people are to weak to do anything about it.

  • John H. Holliday D.D.S.

So by banning guns for the lawful self defense of the very high risk volunteer job of extremely vulnerable and totally defenseless neighborhood watch volunteers, also known as an easy and conveniently known defenseless sitting target, sitting duck, walking target or a dead man walking, both the City of Sanford and the Sanford Police Department are refusing to allow law abiding people who volunteer for an increasingly dangerous, risky and hazardous neighborhood watch job, as convenient vulnerable and defenseless walking targets or dead men walking complete with bulls eye targets painted on their backs, to defend their lives against a very sudden and totally unexpected Life or Death attack from an armed criminal baby faced thug attacker which is the same as saying that the Life of an armed criminal attacker or the Life an armed police officer, who has a real chance to defend his or her own Life from that armed criminal attacker, is a much more important and valuable armed criminal attacker Life or is a much more important and valuable armed police officer Life than the much less important and much less valuable Life of an inferior and unimportant citizen neighborhood watch volunteer or walking target or dead man walking. The “brave” and “courageous” and “honorable” and “noble” Police Unions want to have the power of Life and Death to decide that the Life of a civilian citizen defenseless neighborhood watch volunteer is not nearly as important and is not nearly as valuable as the much more important and much more valuable Life of an armed criminal thug attacker and that the Life of a civilian citizen defenseless neighborhood watch volunteer is not nearly as important and is not nearly as valuable as the much more important and the much more valuable Life of an armed police officer who is permitted the opportunity to be armed for the purpose of having a fighting chance of defending himself. Of course if you are a person who enjoys gambling your Life away in a very high stakes risk of your own Life, by depending on and relying on a hopefully 100% super human police officer to instantaneously and miraculously materialize right in front of your eyes, in an instant Life or Death split second, to courageously and bravely place his own police officer body directly between you and the armed criminal attacker by courageously and bravely standing directly in front of you and very courageously and bravely take a bullet for you and shoot the armed criminal attacker to hopefully, with a lot of Luck, save your own very unimportant inferior Life just in the split second nick of time, then by all means take those odds that are not in your favor, and in fact those odds are greatly stacked against you. Are there any high stakes Life or Death gamblers out there who want to wager and gamble their own Life against the odds? Anyone? Anyone at all?

    • Mark Are Reynolds Ⓥ

Maybe the people of Sanford need to disarm the police and let them run around without guns since they are most likely more dangerous to the population than any other gang member.

      • John H. Holliday D.D.S.

You have stated a plain fact. Calling the police on your cell phone and waiting those precious Life and Death few minutes or few seconds for the police to finally arrive on site of the crime scene or potential crime scene can get you a one way ride zipped up in a body bag to the downtown county coroners morgue officially recorded on the police blotter as just another statistic of just another innocent defenseless murder victim. The police are probably much more useful in courageously and bravely defending their favorite doughnut shops from armed robbers.

  • foxxybey

I wouldn’t be a Neighborhood Watch member since the city just told every crook around not to worry since they are no longer armed, another shooting gallery gun free zone and the city has their heads where the sun don’t shine.

  • Ol’ Grey Ghost

    Like I said…

Don’t try to assist the government; it will consider you competition and try to destroy you…

  • ChiefBoring

If this stands, so much for neighborhood watch volunteers in Sanford, Florida. If Mr. Zimmerman had not been armed, he would very likely be dead or have suffered severe head trauma.

  • ChuckS123

Now everybody in Sanford should conceal carry and be unofficial neighborhood watch people whenever they’re outside.

Basic logic. The reason for neighborhood watches is that there’s a crime problem. That means there are criminals around, who could attack neighborhood watch people or anyone else. That means neighborhood watch people, or anyone else, would be be safer if they’re armed.

  • ChuckS123

Maybe they could just call it something different so the law doesn’t cover it. Observers, friends, homeland security, etc.

    • Mark Are Reynolds Ⓥ

How about not call themselves anything. Just do what needs to be done and tell the city council to go pound dirt.

  • Bob Pante

If there is a place you need to carry it is Sanford.
