Red Crabs Overrun Australia’s Christmas Island

FLYING FISH COVE, Australia (UPI) — Officials with Australia’s Christmas Island National Park said millions of red crabs have overrun the island for their annual mating migration.

The officials said roads have been closed for the season to allow the crabs to travel from the forest to the coast for their annual mating migration, which experts said they expect to lead to a Jan. 6 spawning date.

The Australian Broadcasting Corp. said Australian National Parks figures indicate there are around 45 million red crabs living on the island.

Experts said the annual mating migration was spurred by heavy rains and will continue for as long as the rain continues. The migration could be delayed if conditions turn dry, officials said.
