Oxford Dictionaries Picks ‘Selfie’ As Word Of The Year 2013

OXFORD, England (UPI) — Britain’s Oxford Dictionaries announced “selfie,” meaning a self-portrait photograph, has been chosen as the international Word of the Year 2013.

Oxford said its research indicates the frequency of word “selfie” to mean a picture taken of oneself has increased by 17,000 percent since the closing months of 2012.

Officials said the first known instance of the word in its current form was in an Australian Internet forum in 2002.

“Using the Oxford Dictionaries language research program, which collects around 150 million words of current English in use each month, we can see a phenomenal upward trend in the use of selfie in 2013, and this helped to cement its selection as Word of the Year,” said Judy Pearsall, editorial director for Oxford Dictionaries.

“Selfie” was added to in August 2013.
