NSA Monitored Porn Habits

A popular rallying cry for supporters of government surveillance has been that if you have nothing to hide, you shouldn’t be worried about government snooping. Based on information obtained by The Huffington Post detailing the National Security Agency’s efforts to collect information on the sexually explicit online activity of jihadist “radicalizers,” what your “nothing” is may be up for debate.

The news outlet revealed that the NSA sought to discredit the “credibility, reputation and authority” of at least six unnamed Muslim “radicalizers” by revealing their online sexual activity and visits to pornographic websites.

Stewart Baker, former general counsel for the NSA, said that the effort was simply a more humane way to inhibit the spread of jihad than assassination.

“If people are engaged in trying to recruit folks to kill Americans and we can discredit them, we ought to,” Baker said, according to Huffington Post. “[D]ropping the truth on them,” instead of a drone missile attack, for example, is “fairer and maybe more humane.”

While the cases revealed by the news outlet related only to Muslim extremists, critics of the NSA say that the government could use similar tactics to silent the free speech of dissidents at home.

As Snowden noted in his original release of NSA data: “Even if you’re not doing anything wrong, you’re being watched and recorded… [T]hey can use the system to go back in time and scrutinize every decision you’ve ever made, every friend you’ve ever discussed something with, and attack you on that basis, to sort of derive suspicion from an innocent life and paint anyone in the context of a wrong-doer.”
