Massachusetts Has More Than $300 For Obama

BOSTON, (UPI) — The Massachusetts treasurer said the commonwealth owes President Barack Obama more than $300 in unclaimed property.

State Treasurer Steve Grossman said his office’s cache of unclaimed property has two $156.23 checks for Obama, both refund checks from Comcast, The Boston Globe reported Wednesday.

The checks are dated May and June of 2009, but Grossman said it usually takes about three years for the state to receive checks for unclaimed property.

Grossman said he doesn’t know why Massachusetts was sent the refund checks for a Maryland cable television account.

“Because it’s a Maryland address, we assume it goes back to when he was in the [U.S.] Senate,” he said.

“It’s kind of interesting that the president of the United States somehow, some way, ended up with unclaimed property,” Grossman said. “We’ve had other high-profile people before, star football players, star baseball players and actors. But I don’t ever remember a president before.

Grossman said he hopes Obama asks for his checks.

“We’ll let the White House know there are some forms that need to be filled out, and we’ll find someone close to the president to urge him to sign them and send them back. I know a lot of people for whom $312.46 is a big deal if they were to get an unclaimed property check,” he said.
