Louise Woodward, Nanny In 1997 Baby Death Case, Expecting

BRIDGNORTH, England (UPI) — Former nanny Louise Woodward, whose 1997 Boston trial after the death of a baby brought global interest, is home in England and expecting a baby, friends say.

The Birmingham Mail reported Monday Woodward, 35, works as a dance instructor in Shropshire and is seven months pregnant. She is married to businessman Anthony Elkes.

At age 16, working as a nanny in the United States, she was convicted of second-degree murder in the death of 8-month-old Matthew Eappen in Boston. Prosecutors said she shook the infant to death. The trial was broadcast worldwide.

Woodward was sentenced to 15 years in prison, but on appeal the charge was reduced to involuntary manslaughter. She was released after serving 279 days and then returned to England. She has long maintained her innocence in the case, and her court testimony was backed by medical experts, the newspaper said.
