Gun Homicides Sharply Down, Ownership Up… Public Remains Brainwashed

A study released Tuesday by the Bureau of Justice Statistics is bad news for people in the United States seeking to further restrict citizens’ 2nd Amendment rights. It illustrates a sharp drop in the number of American gun homicides since their highest level of occurrence a decade ago.

The BJS study found that homicides committed with firearms dropped 49 percent, from 18,253 in 1993 to 11,101 in 2011.

For gun rights advocates, however, the results are unsurprising. They echo similar findings by the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report.

At the same time the number of gun-related homicides fell, the rate of gun ownership increased. Pew reports in a separate gun-related report: “The number of firearms available for sale to or possessed by U.S. civilians (about 310 million in 2009, according to the Congressional Research Service) has grown in recent years, and the 2009 per capita rate of one person per gun had roughly doubled since 1968.”

Pew also indicated a drop in gun homicides, citing a more drastic change: from seven gun-related homicides per 100,000 people in 1993 to 3.6 in 2010, a drop of 49 percent.

In spite of the drop in the number of gun-related homicides as the rate of firearm ownership is on the rise in recent years, vilification of guns and gun owners by reactionary media and political interests has taken its toll. A Pew survey from March indicated that a majority (56 percent) of Americans believe gun-related crimes happen more frequently than they did in past decades.

I wonder if this is what prompted a report I saw on the local news the other day. Some idiot stated that people do not have a right to defend themselves from attack by using a gun, even if their attackers have a gun. If they do shoot their attackers, they should be arrested and charged with either attempted murder or murder, depending on the outcome.

    • dalek1967

You described him pretty well. He’s a idiot. lol Is there a unarmed cop anywhere in this country? If the Government will get rid of every weapon they have, then we can talk. Yea, I’m not holding my breath either. ;-)

  • Grandpa Frog

BAD PHOTO! Finger on trigger, hammer is cocked, and clip about to be inserted. Gun control people will love it!

    • kmoomoo2

That would be a magazine. Not a clip. If you’re going to correct it, use the proper terminology.

    • JeffH

That picture was borrowed from a Bloomberg M.A.I.G. anti-gun flyer.

    • tom

It’s a MAGAZINE dude, clips are for Garands

      • independent thinker

Also for ARs, SKS, and assorted Mausers. Do not worry your self too much about it many a well known gun writer has used the two terms interchangably when talking about magazines.

    • FreedomFighter

I think it was held and aimed by a liberal during the picture shoot…

    Show that to Piers Morgan

    • JeffH

rendarsmith, Uncle Ted Nugent did…and Piers still refused to accept the facts.

Hmmmm, we have a handfull of progressive/liberals here that can identify with Piers Morgan…they don’t like no stinkin’ facts either.

“Conservatives roll their eyes and sigh when you lie about them. Liberals get angry when you tell the truth about them.”

      • vicki

Or when you just tell them self evident (and easy to verify) truths like

~300 Million Americans didn’t shoot anyone in the last year (nor year before….)

Stop punishing the INNOCENT for the acts of a very few.

        Stop it
        Stop it now

And as you well know (you have been pointing out the above too :) this statistic works when you use a state or city population too.

The OVERWHELMING majority of us are law abiding and we really are getting tired of being punished by our government for the acts of a very very few.

Just another instance of what a scourge the mainstream media has become. Somehow common sense has been lost in these discussions and Mr. Obama is leading a charge that may circumvent the legislative process entirely. I never voted for him but really wanted to believe in his message, The error in my thinking has since been displayed daily and I am ashamed this SOB is in a position of power….. of any kind. He is NO ABE LINCOLN. My home state is Illinois, my parents are getting along in years and I need to return there. But that state is among the most corrupt, in debt & highly taxed states with anti gun folks foaming at the mouth. Most Illinoinas would like to see Chicago declared the 51st state just so those down state could be left alone. What’s happened to Ilinois hurts me at a viceral level because it’s so widespread, so un-American and so un-necessary. Liberals beware. Your time is coming and it won’t be pretty.

    • teejcee44

Never would vote for him, knew he was not going to make a good president the first time I heard him talk. He is always going to be a liberal narcissistic socialist. It is in his genes. He isn’t going to do any good for our country. He needs to go.

  • NObama_Holder_Reid_Pelosi_2012

Could it be that homocides are down because the libtards have been brainwashed long enough to think guns are bad so less of them have guns, resulting in less homicide by gun.

    • JimH

Hi Rob, The answer would be ,no.

  • Ol’ Grey Ghost

Other myths the MSM continue to pound into our heads…

most of the murders in this country are probly in the big cities where the poor are desparate and will do anything to get what they need. there gangs don’t help either. if obunhole ,congress, and business would get off of their cans there would be a lot less if there were more jobs. that would definatly take the wind out of owebunholes antigun agenda.

  • securityman

rob carpent, if someone had something you wanted real bad and you knew that you could take it and get away with it, what would you do? now, if you thought that you might get hurt real bad or killed, what would you do? i don’t really expect an honest answer out of you, i just want you to think about it,

  • tom

The dude in the picture is an accident waiting to happen. Reloading with finger on the trigger, hammer cocked, maybe a round already chambered as the slide is forward. If you must show a picture at least show one with SAFE gun handling by someone who knows what they are doing. As for the article, one in the eye for the knee JERK gun banners and professional victims.

  • ChuckS123

I hate to say this, but somebody said that our murder rate would be 4 times higher if not for improved medical technology. Of course, other countries may also have 4 times the murder rate in that case.

  • midnightsun

Ummm where did the picture come from? Look at the finger on the trigger. Seriously, any responsibile gun owner knows to never put your finger on the trigger when loading your firearm.
