Florida City Buys Snowplows For Storm Debris Clearning

LARGO, Fla. (UPI) — Officials in a Florida city that hasn’t seen measurable snowfall since 1977 said the $22,000 purchase of two snowplows will benefit cleanup after storms.

Public works officials in Largo, which last had a measurable snowfall in 1977, said the two snowplows the city spent more than $22,000 to purchase in July will be used to clear debris from the city’s roads following severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and hurricanes, WFTS reported Monday.

“When the police and fire departments are trying to come through and do emergency search and rescue or emergency response, obviously debris in the roadway can stop them, flatten tires and cause other problems,” said Brian Usher, Largo’s public works director.

Usher said snowplows have proven successful in fulfilling similar purposes in Oklahoma and other locations around the country.

He said the snowplows are a more cost-effective alternative to bulldozers and front-end loaders.

“A lot of small communities up north don’t have lots of equipment, but they do have lots of snowplows on hand, so they just started mounting them up and using them,” Usher said.
