FBI: Law Enforcement Officer Deaths While On Duty Down In 2012

WASHINGTON, Oct. 28 (UPI) — The number of U.S. police officers who died while on duty declined overall in 2012, with nearly half of them dying in accidents, the FBI reported Monday.

Statistics collected by the agency found that of the 95 law enforcement officers who died last year, 48 died as a result of “felonious acts,” a substantial decline from the 72 recorded in 2011.

Another 47 died in accidents, down six from the previous year.

Of the officers killed in violent circumstances, 12, or 25 percent, died in arrest situations. Four died answering domestic violence calls and one was killed while handling a person with mental illness.

Nearly half, or 22, of the officers who died accidentally were killed in automobile crashes. Six died in motorcycle accidents, while the rest died in falls, aircraft accidents or other mishaps.

The average age of the officers was about the same no matter how they died, the FBI report found: 38 for those who died violently and 39 for those in accidents.

Nearly 53,000 officers were assaulted while performing their duties, the report added, with nearly 28 percent suffering injuries. The largest percentage, 32.5 percent, were attacked while responding to disturbances.
