DHS Acting Inspector General Charles Edwards Resigns

WASHINGTON, Dec. 17 (UPI) — Charles Edwards, acting inspector general of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, resigned amid allegations of misuse of office.

Edwards’ resignation late Monday came three days before he was scheduled to testify at a Senate hearing on questions regarding his lack of independence.

Whistle-blowers within his office claimed Edwards was eager to win the White House nomination as permanent inspector general and was susceptible to political pressure from the top DHS leadership, the Washington Post reported Tuesday. The claims include delays in investigations, the changing of findings in reports, threats of retaliation against those who resisted him and charges he used staff to do personal work.

In November the White House announced President Barack Obama nominated John Roth, a Food and Drug Administration criminal investigator, to become the permanent inspector general.
