Democrats to Fast-track Legislation Reducing Greenhouse Gases

Democrats have put legislation to curb greenhouse gases on the fast track in their efforts to rein in global warming even though scientists disagree on whether it is a man-caused phenomenon.

House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman, D-Calif., hopes to get a bill out of his committee by Memorial Day, claiming that inaction on the climate issue is causing uncertainties that make it more difficult to emerge from the recession.

But nothing could be further from the truth. One of the key components Democrats are pushing is Cap and Trade, which sets limits on carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel use and allows companies which fall under those limits to trade or sell their excess to those that do not. It is a bill that will kill American industry.

While the legislation outlining how much greenhouse gases should be reduced has yet to be written, during his campaign President Obama called for greenhouse gas levels to be reduced by 80 percent of 1990 levels by 2050. Legislation considered but not passed last year would have reduced gases 25 percent by 2020.

It was not as drastic as Obama’s goals. But, according to a report by the Heritage Foundation that legislation, if passed, would have cost each American household as much as $1,300 by 2015 and $2,500 by 2050. It would also have driven up electricity and gasoline prices.

Further Heritage Foundation analysis states a bill requiring cutting carbon emissions by that amount, which is essentially a tax on energy, will cost the country hundreds of thousands of jobs and an overall reduction in the gross domestic product of $1.7 trillion to $4.8 trillion by 2030. So, if Obama has his way job losses caused by increased energy costs, fines and regulations on businesses would be even greater.

As the government pushes toward legislation to stop global warming, consider the facts. The earth’s temperature has actually decreased since reaching its peak in 1997. Human activity contributes only about one-fourth of 1 percent of all CO2 in the atmosphere. And most scientists are now admitting that nothing man can do will affect atmospheric temperatures.

Environmentalism is the new home of socialists and those who seek to destroy capitalism and freedom. Any legislation aimed at combating a non-existent problem will hurt the country through loss of jobs, increased taxation and reduction of freedoms. This is not what the country needs in this, or any, economic climate.
