Colors Matter In Job Interview, Survey Finds

CHICAGO, Nov. 21 (UPI) — Success at a job interview may mean choosing a color that sends the right message to a perspective employer, U.S. online job site CareerBuilder said.

CareerBuilder said Thursday a survey of 2,099 hiring managers conducted Aug. 13-Sept. 6 found employers associate different colors with different character traits.

The survey also found orange is considered the worst color to wear for a job interview, except that orange, green, yellow and purple were all colors associated with traits of creativity, CareerBuilder said.

Among the other color options, black was associated with leadership, blue with being a team player and gray with logic and reasoning. White projects organization and brown suggests dependability.

Red is associated with power, the survey found.

CareerBuilder advised job candidates to dress for the environment of the specific company but favor a more conservative approach than one that is too casual.

In terms of colors, “stick with neutral,” the firm advised. “You can’t go wrong with navy, black, brown and gray,” CareerBuilder said, suggesting those colors plus a white shirt and a “splash of a more vibrant color,” might work for the job candidate.

But stick to vibrant as opposed to wacky, CareerBuilder said. Loud ties or distracting jewelry might put off or distract the interviewer.

The survey was conducted online by Harris Interactive and involved only hiring managers in the United States, CareerBuilder said.
