Census Data: Moms More Likely To Be Single Parents

WASHINGTON (UPI) — Three in four American parents living with a child 18 or younger are married, data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau shows.
About 16 percent of parents living with children are not living with a domestic partner of any sort and 8 percent live with a partner who is of no relation to their children, the Census Bureau said.
A gender gap exists in the findings, as well, the bureau said. About 86 percent of fathers living with children have a spouse in the house while only 67 percent of mothers can say the same.
The statistics back up the struggles many single mothers face, officials said.
“Mothers are more likely than fathers to be raising a child without a partner present and fathers are less likely to live with their children,” said Jamie Lewis, a demographer with the Census Bureau’s Fertility and Family Statistics Branch.
