Boehner Says GOP Is Working On Immigration Reform

WASHINGTON, Del. (UPI) — House Speaker John Boehner told colleagues Wednesday a Republican plan for immigration reform is in development.

In a closed-door meeting, Boehner (R-Ohio) said an outline of “principles” will be distributed to members of the House GOP Conference in the near future, POLITICO reported.

The Party’s annual legislative retreat, where an agenda for the upcoming Congressional session is typically set, is scheduled for later this month in Cambridge, Md.

Boehner told colleagues at the meeting he was not willing to enter negotiations using the Senate’s immigration reform bill, but added the issue was one that would not go away, POLITICO said.

At a morning news conference following the meeting, Boehner repeated his demand that any extension of unemployment benefits must be offset with spending cuts and the inclusion of job-creation measures, the Washington newspaper Roll Call reported.

He repeated what he said he told White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough in December.

“I made it clear that we would consider extending emergency unemployment benefits if it was paid for, and if there were provisions we could agree to that would get our economy moving again and put the American people back to work,” he said.
