Why Your Doctor Won’t See You Now

Unless you embrace some serious measures to make sure you are taking care of your health, you may find yourself in a serious medical situation. As soon as Obamacare takes effect, this program, along with a number of other factors, may make it much harder to visit a doctor.

So, there’s only one person you can rely on to promote your good health – yourself.

For one thing, we are facing a looming, serious shortage of physicians. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), we are facing a dire predicament. You can expect a shortage of more than 90,000 doctors over the next 10 years.

The anticipated shortage derives from a handful of factors:

  • The Census Bureau projects a 36 percent growth in the number of Americans over age 65; the population segment with the greatest healthcare needs.
  •  The Department of Health and Human Services estimates that the physician supply will increase by only 7 percent in the next 10 years.
  • The passage of the Affordable Healthcare Act (Obamacare), intended to insure an additional 32 million Americans, plus 15 million patients who will become eligible for Medicare, will vastly increase the demand on physician services.

An Aging Population

As I point out in my new book, Navigating Obamacare, “In addition to a growing elderly population, people are living longer and experiencing age-sensitive conditions, like cancer, that require specialists and surgeons. The AAMC’s Center for Workforce Studies believes there will be 45,000 too few primary physicians and a shortage of 46,000 surgeons and specialists in this next decade.”

Part of the doctor deficit will no doubt be caused by early retirement of doctors not happy with the direction American healthcare is taking.

A survey by The Deloitte Center for Health Solutions surveyed more than 600 physicians and found that six in 10 (62 percent) said it was likely many of their colleagues will retire earlier than planned in the next one to three years.

It’s Likely Your Doctor May Refuse to Treat You

If you are on Medicaid or Medicare, or will be accepted into the Medicaid expansion, you may have a hard time seeing a doctor. Of more than 1 million physicians, therapists and counselors nationwide, only 43 percent currently accept Medicaid, according to a new study by HealthPocket, a technology firm that compares and ranks health plans.

As of May 2013, 26 States and the District of Columbia have opted to participate in the Obamacare Medicaid expansion and it’s estimated that 5 million to 8 million new patients will gain access to Medicaid coverage under the law.

Medical Concern

These changes in our healthcare system have doctors concerned.

“If the current Medicaid acceptance rates hold true for 2014, timely access to care for those relying on Medicaid is likely to become more difficult as enrollees compete for an already inadequate pool of doctors,” said Kev Coleman, the head of research and data at HealthPocket.

Doctors are accepting fewer and fewer Medicaid patients for two reasons: Too little pay and too much paperwork. And it’s only going to worsen.

On average, Medicaid physicians are only paid 56 percent of what private insurance pays. Lower payment rates already discourage doctors from accepting Medicaid recipients, which has lead to accessibility issues and emergency room overcrowding.

As more patients enroll in this broken program, it will place even more financial strain on physicians who treat them. Doctors will be faced with the decision to either discontinue treating Medicaid patients or accept even more patients at the lower payment rate.

Additionally, doctors will have to focus increasingly on red tape—government rules and regulations, mountains of paperwork—rather than the specific needs of their patients.

To retain the doctors who take Medicaid patients and to recruit new ones, Obamacare promised to increase Medicaid primary care payments to the same level as Medicare’s in 2013 and 2014. However, those increases were supposed to start in January 2012, and have already been delayed.

Because so much of Obamacare is simply speculation, just like the insurance exchanges, many doctors are cutting their losses and cutting Medicaid and Medicare patients altogether.


The message of all these developments is clear: When it comes to reliable medical care and better health, you’ve got to be self-reliant. Unless you eat a healthy diet of whole foods with lots of fruits and vegetables, exercise and keep your stress levels down, you may find yourself in a health crisis without significant medical help.

Is Exposure Making You Sick?

There is no question that a large and growing number of people have developed illnesses largely caused from present-day environmental chemicals. Whether you have arthritis, memory difficulties, heart trouble, thyroid weakness, or one of a myriad of other chronic idiopathic (arising spontaneously or from an obscure or unknown cause) illnesses, exposure to chemicals may be to blame.

Chemical Exposure May Be The Root Of Your Health Problems
The symptoms caused by chemical or environmental exposures are usually multiple and sometimes disabling. It is a subtle process — one that has taken decades for our nation’s experts to figure out. These chemicals more classically affect the brain, nervous system or immune system. However, evidence is mounting that they also affect joints, heart muscle, the bowel, thyroid, intestinal lining and probably more.

We now know that they may be contributing triggers to many idiopathic illnesses. While the exact mechanism of how chemicals affect these tissues is not entirely clear, antibodies and markers of immune system inflammation are measurable and usually correspond with symptoms and history.

Let me share a case study to illustrate this. The February 3, 2006 issue of TheNewYorkTimes.com describes one patient’s plight that is all too common:

“During a nine-year period that ended in 2004, Ms. Riley, 47, visited almost 20 doctors, for a variety of intermittent and strange health complaints: blurred vision, urinary difficulties, and balance problems so severe that at times she wobbled like a drunk.

“She felt unwell most of the time, but doctors could not figure out what she had. ‘Each specialist ordered different tests, depending on the symptom,’ Ms. Riley said, ‘but they were usually rushed and seemed to solicit her views only as a formality.’

“Undeterred, Ms. Riley, an event planner who lives near New London, CT, typed out a four-page description of her ordeal, including her suspicion that she suffered from lead poisoning. One neurologist waved the report away as if insulted; another barely skimmed it, she said. ‘I remember sitting in one doctor’s office and realizing, ‘He thinks I’m crazy,’ Ms. Riley said. I was getting absolutely nowhere in conventional medicine, and I was determined to get to the root of my problems.’

“Through word of mouth, Ms. Riley heard about Deirdre O’Connor, a naturopath with a thriving practice in nearby Mystic, CT, and made an appointment. Right away, Ms. Riley said, she noticed a difference in the level of service. ‘Before even visiting the office, she received a fat envelope in the mail containing a four-page questionnaire,’ she said. In addition to asking detailed questions about medical history — standard information — it asked about her energy level, foods she craved, sensitivity to weather and self-image: ‘Please list adjectives that describe you,’ read one item.

“‘It felt right, from the beginning,’ Ms. Riley said. Her first visit lasted an hour and a half, and Ms. O’Connor, the naturopath, agreed that metal exposure was a possible cause of her symptoms. It emerged in their interview that Ms. Riley had worked in the steel industry, and tests of her hair and urine showed elevated levels of both lead and mercury. After taking a combination of herbs, vitamins and regular doses of a drug called dimercaptosuccinic acid, or DMSA, to treat lead poisoning, she began to feel better, and the symptoms subsided.”

I can assure you that I hear similar stories all the time. And I’m sure many of you have had similar experiences.

Testing For Chemical And Metal Exposure
The question for some people is what chemicals (xenobiotics) and metals are harming them and to what extent — not an easy answer. Others are content with doing all they can to eliminate their exposure to these harmful materials to remain as healthy as possible.

Specific antibody tests (IgG, IgM and IgE) have been developed that are specific to polychlorinated biphenyls (and other dioxin-like chemicals), DDT, formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, ethylene oxide and heavy metals, including mercury.

But the measurement of antibodies is just the beginning. There is also the ability to measure the levels of killer T cells and several other white blood cell levels, which become elevated when chemical toxins, are driving the inflammation. These can be ordered by any licensed physician through Immunosciences Lab., Inc., in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Another test is designed to measure enzymes in the liver. Since the liver is the detoxifying organ that purifies the blood, it’s the front line of the battle-ground for good health. There are also measurements of gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), the enzyme indicating liver function, or ALT and AST that can show liver cell damage or disease. An elevated GGT, combined with the finding of glucaric acid in the urine, signifies current toxic chemical exposure, but is a late finding in the process of the disease. These tests can be done by almost any lab in the country.

Not only can the antibodies to metals be measured, (mercury, cobalt, nickel, and lead), but the amount of the heavy metal itself can be detected in blood or urine and then be treated much as described by Riley above. I have done this in my office through specialty labs such as Great Smokey’s Diagnostic Laboratory in North Carolina or Doctor’s Data in Illinois. Most CAM-trained physicians are familiar with these labs.

The Aspartame (NutraSweet®), Methanol And Formaldehyde Connection
Did you know that aspartame turns into methanol and formaldehyde when heated? Were you also aware that the American Diabetic Association (ADA) supports the use of aspartame (NutraSweet®) as an acceptable replacement for sugar for people with diabetes?  This is despite the fact that aspartame has generated the largest volume of consumer reports (75 percent of them) describing adverse reactions.

To me this means the ADA is not willing to look at healthier alternatives to sugar and aspartame, such as whole food alternatives like stevia. The ADA’s official statement reads:

“The American Diabetic Association considers aspartame — as well as the other FDA-approved nonnutritive sweeteners (saccharin, acesulfame k, and sucralose) — acceptable sugar substitutes and a safe part of a diabetic meal plan.” Interestingly, Monsanto (producer of NutraSweet®) donates $250,000 a year to the ADA and is a Platinum Corporate Sponsor.

But worse is the FDA’s support of aspartame. Aspartame can be found in breath mints, gum, cereals, frozen desserts, coffee, juice, synthetic vitamins, pharmaceutical drugs, tea, wine coolers, yogurt supplements and of course, diet soft drinks.

That doesn’t sound so bad until you meet people who have linked their health problems to aspartame consumption. Aside from all the political and scandalous implications behind the supposed “safety” of aspartame, it’s equally appalling that Monsanto’s commercial brags that 200,000,000 people are now consuming NutraSweet® in more than 4,000 different products. Don’t think for a minute that they cannot afford the best lawyers and lobbyists to keep their product “legally safe” despite rising evidence to the contrary.

For example: A review of 164 studies on the safety of aspartame conducted by Ralph G. Walton, M.D., chairman of the Center for Behavioral Medicine and professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, revealed that of 74 aspartame industry-sponsored studies, all claimed that aspartame caused no health problems. However, he also found that of the 90 studies funded by non-aspartame industry money, 92 percent identified one or more serious health problems. And if you consider that the remaining 8 percent of the studies (which found no problems with aspartame) were FDA-sponsored and not really independent, it means that in reality, 100 percent of the independent studies found serious health problems with aspartame!

My take-home message is that a large body of scientific evidence now suggests that drugs, metals, toxins, industrial chemicals, low-grade herpes viruses and other xenobiotics can be stored in your body and persist for years. During this time they can continuously activate the immune system to cause low-grade tissue destruction in the wake of their battle to protect you. The detection of the IgG, IgM or IgA antibodies to these materials indicates chronic exposure or ongoing low-level tissue destruction. 
What can you do to protect yourself?
First of all I would advise that you make changes in your life to prevent or at least limit the amount of exposure you may have to xenobiotics and toxins. Secondly I would suggest healthy lifestyle changes to make sure you are doing all you can to avoid inviting these invaders into your body via processed food, chemicalized water, overuse of  medications or the polluted air you could be breathing in your own home.

As another precaution, consider liquid cleanses and seek out nutrients from Mother Nature’s pharmacy that can enhance your body’s own cleansing processes.  Your liver is the great filter for your body, but if it is over-worked, clogged, and fatty it can’t do the job it needs to do to keep you healthy.

Restore Your Passion For Life

Did you know your level of sexual passion is related to your passion for life in general? Just consider it for a moment. How much happiness do you experience with your family, your friends, your work or your hobbies? How much passion do you feel for your spouse outside your sex life? Because, let’s face it, if you’re not finding passion together in the simple things such as fixing a meal, going for a walk or even sharing things about your day, it’s only natural that you’ll also find it lacking in the bedroom.

Passion For Life
On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the highest), rank your passion for life in general. If your score is low, you might be experiencing fear, frustration, feelings of lack or boredom. You might even be depressed. Sometimes mild or even pervasive feelings of sadness, gloom and despair can come out of nowhere and affect men and women very differently. Let’s consider both.

Men Without Passion
Men often don’t want to express their feelings of worry or sadness — even to their wives or family. In the American culture, men are expected to be the emotionless, strong, silent types, like John Wayne, who can handle anything. But in reality, roughly 6 million American men are diagnosed with depression each year, and millions more suffer in silence.

A large number of depressed men fall into the “tough guy” category. A “tough guy” is often unaware of his depression and minimizes his feelings as stress. But if you pay attention to a tough guy’s non-verbal behavior, you’ll see subtle evidence of stress, unhappiness or discontent. In the face of unrecognized depression, families are disrupted, careers are ruined and marriages destroyed. This is the legacy of our cultural expectations of men.

Women Without Passion
Statistics show that more women are diagnosed with depression than men. The reason? Women are very willing to verbalize their emotions and seek out help from a licensed professional, family members or friends.

Hormonal problems can cause depression in women. However, the biggest cause of clinical depression in women is a feeling they are not loved and unconditionally accepted — especially by the significant men in their lives (husband, father, brothers, etc.) Until a woman feels cared about, supported and beautiful, she won’t open her heart. A loving husband can help her regain self-esteem, and through effective communication, a couple can heal their relationship. Communication can also boost their passion for life, and with it, their sexual desire.

But remember the first rule of intimacy… non-sexual love first.

Many couples are very romantic, whether they have consistently great sex or not. These couples understand non-sexual intimacy. How can intimacy be non-sexual?

Intimacy is not just about sexual gratification. Intimacy occurs when two people step off their mental judgments about one another and focus on their feelings for one another. If you focus on “non-sexual love” first, you’ve taken your first step towards sexual intimacy.

And the second rule of intimacy is to activate your biggest sexual organ… your brain.

Believe it or not, your brain is your biggest sexual organ. Your thoughts and feelings can dramatically impact your enjoyment of sexual intimacy. This right frame of mind is essential to wonderful lovemaking. But if you haven’t been intimate for a while, getting in the right frame of mind is like cranking a car that’s been sitting for several months. Your hormones won’t kick in right away. However, there are ways to get them going:

  • Fantasize. See yourself having the greatest sexual encounter you can possibly imagine. This is a great way to “fire up” your body.
  • Release negative feelings. Let go of worries, stress and anger to focus on the “now” moment.
  • Awaken your senses. Your sex drive responds to sounds, scents and even sights. Try music, candles, fragrant body oils… be creative!

Poor Nutrition Can Cause A Lack Of Passion
Your passion for life, including your sex life, is directly influenced by nutrition. So what foods should you eliminate to ramp up your passion?

Begin by eliminating refined sugar. It also helps to avoid caffeine and alcohol in excess. Identify food allergies with elimination diets, then refrain from eating those foods for several months to allow your immune system to reset itself.

Fatigue can zap your passion and your sex life. What causes this bone-numbing lethargy? It could be low or high thyroid levels, low cortisol, low human growth hormone, low testosterone, low progesterone, low DHEA or low blood count.

However, it’s important to consider the effects of prescription medicines, especially drugs that are antihypertensives or antidepressants. Loss of sexual desire is a well-known side effect of those drugs.

It’s possible to get off these fatigue-causing prescription drugs and get your sex life back by committing to a lifestyle of true health. You should eat vegetables — raw or as close to raw as possible — and eliminate processed foods and sugars from your diet.

It’s Time To Get Heart Healthy

According to the American Heart Association, someone in America has a heart attack every 29 seconds — and someone dies from heart failure every single minute. And the odds get even worse as you get older.

Half of the men and 63  percent of the women who have died of a heart attack had no warning prior to their fatal event. While orthodox medical experts estimate that up to 30  percent of fatal attacks (and many follow-up surgeries) could be avoided with healthy lifestyle changes, I am now convinced that nearly all heart attacks can be prevented by implementing the healthy lifestyle principles of true health. Sadly, two-thirds of patients who have already suffered a heart attack don’t make the necessary lifestyle shift to prevent another one.

The first step to preventing a heart attack is understanding what triggers one. Heart attacks are caused by a blockage of the arteries that provide blood and oxygen to your heart muscle. This narrowing of these arteries, or atherosclerosis, is caused by deposits of calcified fatty materials that develop over many years.

Certain physical characteristics and lifestyle activities make these heart blockages more likely.

Understand Your Risk Factors
Unfortunately, there are a few factors you can’t do much about. These include a family history of coronary heart disease, aging and female menopause. But don’t worry — many of these risk factors can be dramatically improved or even eliminated.

Here are some risk factors you CAN do something about:

  • Tobacco smoking, which doubles your risk of a heart attack.
  • Obesity. It’s disastrous for your health, and puts an added burden on your heart.
  • High blood pressure. This can be caused by smoking, obesity, stress, inflammatory foods or a sedentary lifestyle.
  • Diabetes is chronic high blood sugar, which damages small blood vessels and the coronary arteries.
  • Cholesterol. You should be worried if your total cholesterol is above 200, your “bad” cholesterol is above 100 or your “good” cholesterol is below 45.
  • Inflammation. More important than your cholesterol levels because inflammation causes dangerous plaque to stick to your arteries.
  • Lack of physical activity or exercise. Exercise helps you prevent heart disease and heart attack.
  • Stress, anger and depression. Hostility is the “Achilles’ heel” of the heart, which is also negatively affected by stress and frustration.
  • High homocysteine levels create “sticky” blood and cause free radical damage inside your arteries.

The more you improve these conditions, the more you protect yourself from a heart attack. And there’s another way to assess your risk category for a heart disaster.

Get Your Blood Work Done
There are certain heart markers in your blood that can tell you if your arteries are already hardening. If your doctor finds the following in your blood results, you should take serious preventive action now:

  • High fibrinogen, which means your blood could be clotting too much. 
  • High C-reactive protein, which means acute inflammation is occurring somewhere in your body, perhaps inside your blood vessels.
  • High glucose, which can cause a heart attack indirectly by the weakening of blood vessels, a well-known phenomenon of long-standing diabetes.  
  • High insulin, which occurs with Type 2 diabetes.
  • High iron, which indicates problems with your liver. 
  • High triglycerides, which are tied to high insulin levels and high sugar intake over time. It’s also one of the markers of early metabolic syndrome (see below).
  • Low testosterone, which is a marker of losing youth hormones through aging.
  • Metabolic syndrome. It’s estimated one in four people over 30 already have this syndrome, which is characterized primarily by high insulin levels.

Many internal factors can affect your heart negatively. But that’s not all you need to consider. .

Avoid Toxins and Pollutants
You’re constantly exposed to toxic substances… They all put stress on your heart, but just knowing about them can help reduce your risk.

Here are some “outside influences” you should definitely be aware of:

  • Radiation exposure can make “bad” cholesterol stick to your vessel walls.
  • Chronic heavy metal exposure. The metals mercury and antimony are found in fresh water and farm-raised fish.
  • Electromagnetic Frequencies (EMFs). Cell phones, televisions, microwave ovens and even hair dryers emit low intensity EMFs, which could damage human cells.
  • Pesticides and insecticides. Household, garden and farm insecticides can be highly toxic to both animals and humans.
  • Hormones and antibiotics. These are routinely used to maximize livestock growth and increase profitability.
  • Prescription medications. The statin drugs used to lower heart attack risk and lower cholesterol or high blood pressure medications can weaken your heart.

And as if this weren’t bad enough, Americans insist on eating foods that destroy our overall health, including our heart muscle. It makes the chance of a heart attack even greater!

The Real Secret is Prevention
But as you probably know already, mainstream medicine can make it difficult to focus on prevention. Traditional doctors are often more interested in just treating the symptoms, which can make your health even worse. The well-known article found online called Death by Medicine, by Gary Null, Ph.D.; Carolyn Dean M.D., N.D.; Martin Feldman, M.D.; Debora Rasio, M.D.; and Dorothy Smith, Ph.D. describes just how “out of whack” the medical establishment has become:

“U.S. health care spending reached $1.6 trillion in 2003, representing 14% of the nation’s gross national product. Secrets To Naturally Improving Your Immune System

Your immune system is comprised of intricate structures and organisms designed to protect you from disease by identifying and destroying foreign pathogens or disease-causing microbes. This can mean detecting various invaders including viruses, bacteria, toxins, parasites and tumor cells.

These invaders can enter through your skin, nose and mouth by way of air, water or food. Once in the body they can start to wreak havoc on every cell, tissue and organ in their path. This type of toxic invasion can lead to heart disease, cancer, brain disorders, digestive disease, skin disorders, influenza strains (including H1N1) vision loss, diabetes, stroke and virtually every ailment you can imagine.

White blood cells, or leukocytes, are your body’s “soldiers” designed to locate and destroy these microbes. Your lymph system is a network of vessels that carry clear fluid — known as lymph — and white blood cells throughout your body.

Your body is made up of millions of leukocytes including lymphocytes known as helper T cells, suppressor T cells, killer T cells and B cells. These cells are aided by other helpful microbes called phagocytes, monocytes and macrophages. All these tiny cells are part of the immune system and work together to eliminate any foreign invaders from your body.

How? Ancient people knew the body could detect disease and recognize it in the future. But it was modern scientists who determined how your immune system works so that people don’t experience the same disease again and again.

When it comes to allergies, common colds, inflammation and other health problems, the link to all these conditions is most often associated with an imbalance of your immune system. Solutions To Help Maintain Healthy Blood Pressure Levels

To understand what causes high blood pressure you must first understand how your body works to keep blood flowing throughout your body. The blood is carried from your heart by a system of arteries, vessels, veins and capillaries. As your heart beats, blood is pumped out and into the arteries to be carried to your entire body.

The pressure to which the blood is pumped is your blood pressure. There are many factors that can increase or decrease your pressure and have a major impact on your health.

High blood pressure, or hypertension, currently affects more than 74 million people and causes at least 56,000 fatalities each year, according to the American Heart Association (AHA). Things You Should Know About The Opposition To EDTA Chelation

What is EDTA Chelation?

Ethylene diaminetetracetic acid (EDTA) taken orally or intravenously is well known to open up small blood vessels and allow them to be more elastic. Angina pectoris and lower extremity claudication are the two classic blood perfusion problems that are often clinically improved with EDTA chelation therapy. It is known to improve blood pressure, and slow or stop the progression towards atherosclerosis.

Some Things You Should First Know About The Opposition To EDTA Chelation

Even most practicing physicians are completely unaware that less than 20 percent of all bio-medical scientific literature (including all languages) is available to you on the National Library of Medicine’s Index Medicus and its public MEDLINE access at www.pubmed.com. Therefore, doing a computer search for positive outcome studies using EDTA chelation therapy in the treatment of cardiovascular conditions will be deceptively negative.

Unfortunately, there are studies in which negative results from EDTA appear to be scientifically proven. But when we look at these studies we can see how researchers report negative result interpretations of what are actually positive results. More specifically, these negative misleading reports were the 153-patient Danish study, the 17-patient New Zealand study, the 20-patient infusion Heidelberg Trial, the most recent Canadian PATCH study published in 2002, and several such studies used to persuade and confuse.

Unfortunately, once they publish their junk reports to discredit EDTA chelation into mainstream medical journals, the professional community becomes misled and biased against chelation. In fact, you will find that most of the peer-reviewed literature available on the National Library of Medicine’s public access website (www.pubmed.com) is quite stacked with negative results and opinions towards the use of EDTA chelation for cardiovascular conditions (conditions other than lead poisoning).

For example, authors like R. Magee who published his opinion in the Medical Journal of Australia in 1985 stated the following: “Edetate disodium (EDTA) is a chelating agent which has no place in the treatment of atherosclerosis and its complications. Also, its toxic effects can cause other problems which may lead to a fatal outcome. Proper investigation and treatment may sometimes be delayed by a patient’s faith in such therapy.”1

But this same author (R. Magee) published an opinion paper in another Australian journal in 2002 entitled, “Quacks: fakers and charlatans in medicine.” In this “scientific paper” he further pushes his dogmatic views: “Alternative medicine has always had an attraction for some members of the community, and this has extended into the twentieth century. Examples are given of therapies, such as that for the treatment of cancer and arterial disease, in recent years that can only be described as modern-day quackery.”2

Yet there are thousands of physicians who have witnessed the value of chelation therapy in practice and who are familiar with the supporting literature. They have no substantial financial incentive to show benefits of chelation therapy.

For example, these authors also published in peer-reviewed scientific journals and state the direct opposition to R. Magee. They conclude as follows: “The authors conclude that EDTA chelation therapy is a valuable therapeutic option for vascular disease, either alone or in conjunction with standard treatment protocols.”3

And a seasoned scientist from U.C. Berkeley published the following: “EDTA chelation therapy appears to achieve revitalization of the myocardium, and is a viable alternative or adjunct to revascularization. Fish oils are now proven to help revitalize vessel wall endothelia and to partially reverse atherosclerotic damage. Being safe and having proven benefits, chelation therapy and fish oils can be integrated together with nutrients, lifestyle-dietary revision, exercise, and medications as necessary, into a cardiovascular revitalization strategy.” These latter authors present various interventions that are proven beneficial in their papers, while the anti-chelationists report only the negative information about chelation.

You might be interested to also know that statistical analyses of the more carefully performed studies on chelation show that the probability that these positive results are due to random chance alone ranges from less than one in 1,000 to less than one in 10,000. You deserve to be informed of the risks and benefits of all types of valuable interventions, not just the ones that are highly profitable for doctors and pharmaceutical companies. So now let me share with you just some of the eye-opening research in favor of EDTA chelation.

Research In favor Of EDTA Chelation

Oral EDTA Chelation Is Actually Extremely Safe—It’s In Your Food

Did you know that taking an oral chelation supplement is many times safer than taking an aspirin a day? The Journal of Chronic Disease reported in 1963 that EDTA was approximately one third as toxic to the body as aspirin.4 And toxicological studies demonstrate it to be over five times more dangerous in rat studies.5 However, that was before the effect of aspirin on a bleeding stomach was fully realized. Now, more than 40 years later, Dr. Gary Gordon, the leading authority on oral chelation, has declared EDTA “300 times safer than aspirin!”

And if oral EDTA is considered “a true health hazard,” then why has the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved it for use in foods that are enjoyed by everyone from our youngest babies to our oldest seniors? EDTA, first synthesized in Germany in 1935, is a simple amino acid, very similar in composition to common household vinegar. According to drug safety standards, EDTA has been shown to be three times safer than aspirin.

EDTA so safely binds to harmful oxidizing transition metals in our foods that its widespread use is easily justified to stabilize fats, oils and vitamins… to keep potato products from turning brown… to keep fish and shellfish looking fresh in the supermarket… to maintain the flavor and consistency of milk products… protect canned vegetables… and can hardly be considered a true health hazard. In fact, your personal consumption of EDTA from food sources has been estimated at between 15 milligrams (mg) and 50 mg per day, though it can safely be given in doses up to 1, 000 mg daily to adults.

From 1970 to 1980 approximately 100,000 U.S. patients received in excess of 2,000,000 treatments of EDTA chelation without one report of significant toxicity.6 I will venture to say that this “drug” exceeds the safety of any and every other drug currently used in medicine.

Oral EDTA Chelation Removes Toxic Metals

Oral chelation with EDTA is known to cause your body to excrete the toxic minerals lead (toxic to brain and nerves) and cadmium (toxic to kidneys) out your urinary tract.
Did you know that even a slightly increased lead level raises your chance of death by 46 percent? Two important studies expose what many toxicologists have been saying for years about the destructive effect that metals have on brain function. In a 2002 article in Archives of Internal Medicine the analysis of a study conducted between 1976 and 1992 of 4,292 individuals from age 30 to 74 were found to have a slightly elevated blood lead level—comprising 15 percent of the population. Among these people with slightly elevated blood lead levels there was a 46 percent increased death rate (all-cause mortality) compared to those with completely “normal” blood lead levels.

Actually, there is no safe lead level. In other words, any detectable lead level is a risk to your health. The New England Journal of Medicine, 2003 reported a consistent and direct correlation with blood lead levels in children and their worsening IQ levels at ages 3 and 5 even down into the “normal range,” such that there is no safe level of lead. They concluded with saying, “These findings suggest that more U.S. children may be adversely affected by environmental lead than previously estimated.”

But the ability of oral chelation to eliminate toxic metals gets even better. The University of Michigan recently hosted scientists and researchers from all over the world at a conference on toxic heavy metals. Along with the overwhelming evidence of the benefits of chelation for a wide range of conditions, a study on oral chelation was presented showing the heavy metal urine analyses on 14 patients ages 29 to 73 before and then after only one dose of an oral chelation EDTA product. Results showed a significant excretion of all six of the toxic heavy metals most commonly encountered. The following are the average percentages of heavy metal excretion increases in the 14 patients after just one day of oral EDTA: Aluminum: 229 percent; Arsenic: 661 percent; Cadmium: 276 percent; Lead: 350 percent; Mercury: 773 percent; and Nickel: 9,439 percent! So please don’t be scared into thinking that oral chelation is a “health hazard” because you may lose some trace elements along with the toxic ones. In fact, let me comment on trace element excretion and oral EDTA.

Oral EDTA Chelation—Trace Mineral Excretion Effect Easily Overcome

It is true that along with causing you to lose toxic heavy metals, EDTA can also cause you to lose the important trace minerals zinc and calcium if you don’t get enough in your diet. That is why the simple recommendation to supplement with zinc and calcium with oral chelation has proven to more than make up for this trace mineral excretion. Essentially, the potential of trace mineral depletion of any consequence to your health is minimal according to the research by Dow Chemical and also a 2000 report published in Food Chemical Toxicology.7, 8 Even better news is that EDTA appears not to deplete the trace minerals cobalt, chromium and copper. Fortunately, EDTA causes a slight retention of the beneficial trace mineral magnesium.9

Other research shows that trace minerals become even more bio-available with oral EDTA.10 At the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) Bioavailability Conference, the ENVIRON International Corporation’s report regarding mineral absorption revealed that EDTA is a dietary factor that enhances the absorption of zinc with protein, cysteine, citrate and methionine.11 Therefore, making the blanket statement, “EDTA is not recommended for oral use” based on its trace metal excretion properties is like advising you to never drive your car because of your risk of getting into a dangerous accident—or abstaining from eating fruits and vegetables because of the risk of pesticide poisoning. Therefore, let me point more benefits of EDTA chelation. I do not include in this report the thousands of individuals that have received benefit from oral chelation and reported it to True Health

Dosing with oral EDTA is much more liberal since absorption is much less, estimated at 5 percent to 18 percent of I.V. EDTA. Given the established safety of EDTA, in clinical practice doses of 300 mg to 1,000 mg daily is found to be safe and effective. Unless a patient has kidney disease, there is no ongoing monitoring needed and there are no adverse reactions being reported in millions of patient doses.

Benefits On Heart And Blood Vessels—Amazingly Effective

Studies showing the benefits of EDTA chelation began in 1953 when Dr. Norman Clarke Sr. and associates of Detroit, Mich., began using EDTA chelation to reduce coronary heart disease. In 1956, they had treated 20 patients who were suffering from chest pain. Out of the 20 patients, 19 had "remarkable" improvement in symptoms.12

For several years, many small studies and clinical observations were growing among open-minded physicians who saw the tremendously expensive mainstream medicine’s approach to treating heart disease—open heart surgery.

Did you know that from 44 percent to 85 percent of coronary artery bypass surgery has been routinely performed without patients even meeting criteria for benefit?13,14 Yet mainstream medicine (where the power and the money is) consistently supports such flagrant abuses of surgery all the while ignoring EDTA chelation therapy. These over-riding recommendations come from the cardiovascular surgeons, the American Heart Association, and the American College of Cardiology. Yet even the American Medical Association admits that 44 percent of coronary artery bypass surgeries are done for inappropriate reasons.15

In this environment further studies continued to demonstrate successes with EDTA chelation therapy, only to penetrate the minds of physicians willing to find safer treatments for mild to moderate heart and blood vessel conditions.

A Retrospective Study Of 2,870 Patients Shows 89 Percent Get Good Or Marked Results!16

In 1988 a 28-month retrospective study of 2,870 patients with documented atherosclerosis and other degenerative illnesses, researchers Efrain Olszewer, M.D. and James P. Carter, M.D., Dr.PH., found that when they were treated with disodium magnesium EDTA chelation therapy there were remarkable benefits in multiple areas of health.

  • 76.9 percent of treated patients with ischemic heart disease had marked improvement and 17 percent had good improvement.
  • 91 percent of treated patients with intermittent claudication (sign of advanced peripheral vascular disease) had marked improvement and 8 percent had good improvement
  • 24 percent of treated patients with cerebrovascular and other degenerative cerebral diseases had marked improvement and 30 percent had good improvement.
  • Three of four treated patients with scleroderma had marked improvement and one had good improvement.
  • 75 percent of all patients with symptoms of vascular origin had marked improvement
  • In summary, 89 percent of all treated patients had marked or good improvement independent of pathology!

Improvement By 80 Percent To 90 Percent Found In A 470-Patient Prospective Study17

In 1993 two well-respected Danish doctors, Hancke and Flytlie, measured improvements in several different criteria among 470 patients who were followed for six years after receiving chelation therapy. They found a 90 percent improvement reported in 265 patients with documented coronary artery disease. Of these, 65 had already been referred for bypass surgery before chelation. And an impressive 58 out of these 65 improved so dramatically after chelation therapy that completely avoided surgery. For those patients using nitroglycerine to control their angina chest pain, 189 out of 207 were able to reduce their consumption because of EDTA chelation, and most of these discontinued nitroglycerine altogether. And 24 out of 27 patients awaiting foot or leg amputation actually avoided surgery.

EDTA Chelation Therapy Gets 88 Percent Improvement In Cardiovascular Function: A Meta-Analysis

In 1994 researchers L. Terry Chappell, M.D., and John P. Stahl, Ph.D., performed a meta-analysis of currently available studies using I.V. EDTA chelation therapy for cardiovascular disease. In their search they identified 40 articles on the subject. Of the 19 studies which met their criteria for a valid study, there were 22,765 patients included. Their analysis revealed that on average there was an 88 percent positive relationship between EDTA therapy and improved cardiovascular function as demonstrated by clinical improvement and also by objective before-and-after testing. Then, to add confidence in the effectiveness of EDTA treatment, they collected unpublished "file drawer" data from 32 clinicians who utilize intravenous EDTA and found improvement in 1,086 of the 1,241 patients (88 percent).18

As a result of historical success and ongoing clinical satisfactory results with patients, an estimated 1,526 U.S. doctors currently recommend EDTA chelation as a central focus of therapy to their patients. And chelation therapy has been given to more than 1 million Americans and 3 million patients in Canada, Europe, Australia and South America.

Benefits On Blood Thinning And Possibly Cholesterol-Lowering

There is evidence that oral EDTA also has the health benefit of causing an anticoagulant and anti-platelet effect. This is thought to occur through its effect of chelating calcium ions.19,20 Other ways it has been shown to keep your blood thin is by prolonging prothrombin time21 and has effects on platelets22 and cell membranes23 and is thought to lower cholesterol.24

Benefits On Musculoskeletal, Skin, Neurological And Cardiovascular Symptoms

After an approximate 26 infusion of EDTA plus multivitamin and mineral replacement, the following conditions improved: 25

  • Of 101 patients with musculoskeletal complaints, there was a 31 percent improvement.
  • Of 64 patients with skin complaints, 28 percent had improvement.
  • Of 108 patients with neurological complaints, 23 percent had improvement.
  • Of 130 patients with heart or blood vessel complaints, 22 percent had improvement.

Benefits On Diabetes

  • Chest pains are eased and chronic shortness of breath is reversed.

Indeed, opponents to EDTA chelation therapy have made it a controversial subject, but it really isn’t. The truth is, most doctors are inexperienced in chelation and understand little about how it works. They are simply uninformed.

Consider the treatment costs of cardiovascular disease using standard interventions to Americans is over $100 billion dollars annually, and one bypass graft surgery alone is approximately $44,000 including all costs involved. This “standard of care” surgery has been harshly criticized to be over-prescribed and often unnecessary by numerous leading medical doctors and authorities. Yet the machine of orthodox medicine continues to charge Americans the big bills—even though nearly 20,000 people die every year as a result of bypass graft surgery or balloon angioplasty.27

Finally, when you consider that there are 1.2 million new and recurrent heart attacks per year in the U.S. annually, along with 15.8 million victims of angina28, doesn’t it make sense to find a safe and effective alternative to standard treatments for this condition? EDTA chelation therapy is part of the better answer, and oral chelation is the simplest way to get a constant low dose of EDTA to open up or keep open small arteries for optimum blood flow to organs.

Understanding Your Acid-Alkaline Balance

As newborn babies, we are full of alkaline reserves and our metabolism moves smoothly and cleanly. When we die, we rapidly turn to acid waste. Alkalinity is health, longevity, and quality of life. Acidity, in simple terms, and in the minds of natural health practitioners, means sickness and death. When I see a patient with chronic symptoms of arthritis, diabetes, emphysema, arteriosclerosis, or cancer, I know their tissues and metabolism are running acidic. Regardless of the particular symptoms, all of these conditions originate with an increase in the amount of acid in the body tissues, which translates into impaired cellular metabolism, enzyme function, and energy production within the cells.

Tissue acidity has a long list of harmful effects upon the body if not neutralized or eliminated. For example, the body’s ability to absorb minerals and other nutrients decreases significantly in acid conditions. Additionally, the enzymatic processes that control the repair mechanisms for damaged DNAand other critical structures become weakened. And the liver cannot detoxify heavy metals from the body when an acid pH predominates. Clearly, cancer cells proliferate wildly in acid conditions. Acid tissue pH causes fatigue that leads to depression and stress.

What is pH?

The pH or “potential of Hydrogen” is a measure of the relative acidity or alkalinity of a solution. Because it usually takes a full hour lecture to explain pH in detail, I will first give the technical overview of pH and then follow with a simple explanation of it. The pH of a solution is expressed as a “negative logarithm of the hydrogen ion concentration in a solution.” In other words, in a solution with a pH of 7.0 (such as pure distilled water) there are 10 billion hydrogen ions per cubic decimeter. More simply put, the term pH is a symbol for the amount of acidity or alkalinity of a solution. A pH of 7.0 is a perfectly neutral pH; from 0 to 7.0 indicates acidity; and from 7.0 to 14.0 indicates alkalinity. Another way to think of it is that fluids become more acidic the farther below 7.0 they become (like stomach acid at approximately the pH of 2.0) and more alkaline the farther above 7.0 they become. And just for clarity, here are some pH values for various items before they enter the body:

  • orange juice is 3.0

  • tomato juice is 4.0

  • milk is 6.8

  • neutral is 7.0

  • baking soda is 9.0

  • milk of magnesia is 10.7

  • household bleach is 12.5

Physiologic pH

There have literally been volumes written about the pH of the body. The physiologic pH is the acidalkaline level of any given area of the body that allows for optimal function. For example, the blood of a healthy human is at physiologic pH (optimum) which is 7.36 to 7.40. Yet the urine has its physiologic pH ranging between 6.0 and 6.4 when it is dumping acid and at 6.8 to 7.0 when the body is happily alkaline and there is little acid to dump. Saliva is another measurable fluid “compartment” of the body that reflects the lymphatic system and ranges from 6.4 to 7.2 optimally, depending on what else is going on in the body (illness, stress, dehydration, etc.).

The human body is constantly struggling to maintain a healthy alkaline pH level. Why? Since the natural metabolic byproduct of cellular energy production and utilization of nutrients within the cells is generally acid as will be explained, there must be sufficient buffering (neutralizing) effects to keep from moving toward more and more acid.

The Typical American Diet

Many people are not successful and live every day in an acid state. When our digestive system metabolizes foods, acids are produced. The body has natural ways of eliminating excess acid including the lungs, kidneys, intestinal tract, and skin. These systems can become overworked if you consume too many acid-producing foods. If this excess acid is not counteracted by consuming the right amounts of alkaline foods, the excess acid becomes overwhelming for your body to handle naturally and you may begin to experience headaches, illness, colds, allergies, viruses, and diseases. All this dysfunction in the body is the sign that the body is trying to balance the sensitive pH level inside itself.

How Do You Know if You’re Acidic?

You can get a useful trend of your acid-alkaline balance by using pH test strips or litmus paper which you can purchase at most pharmacies. In clinical practice, patients use litmus paper to periodically test their own saliva or urine. Over time, their pH values tend to be more alkaline (toward optimum) as they overcome disease and institute alkaline lifestyle habits.

Does it really correlate with health and is it really useful? This question is often asked by the patient or doctor unfamiliar with the concept of tissue acidity. In fact, you will find that this concept has no meaning to a physician trained only in conventional medicine. But for those skilled in natural therapy and who address the underlying cause of disease, body pH is definitely important.

If you’re like most people who regularly eat animal meats, fried foods, processed foods, refined sugars, pasteurized dairy products, or other acid-producing foods, then most likely you’re acidic. The list below of alkaline-forming and acid-forming foods is revealing— especially if you realize your foods are mostly from the acid forming category.

Testing Your pH

If you choose to test saliva, wait two hours after eating. Spit into a spoon and dip a pH test strip in your saliva. Read the results immediately by matching the color of the pH strip to the color chart for the correct indication of your pH level. An optimal reading is 7.2 which reflects that you have effectively alkalinized your tissues.

When testing urine use any void other than the first one in the morning. Fill a small cup with urine and dip the pH strip in the urine. Read the results immediately by matching the color of the pH strip to the color chart for the correct indication of your pH level. A reading of 6.4 to 6.8 is a favorable reading; more acidic (in the 5.5 to 6.4 range) usually means you are dumping excessive acids but that your kidneys are working hard to do so. Above 7.0 for urine could either mean that you are well alkalinized or that you have stirred some ammonia to help fight an infection of some sort. Urine pH fluctuates more with your diet and daily activities.

If your test results are acidic, then consider what you could do for yourself by increasing your intake of alkaline foods while reducing the acid foods you eat. You really are not the same person that you were last year. Alkaline Foods and How to Get Started

When discussing foods, you must understand that there is a huge difference between “acidic foods” and “acid-forming foods.” A good example is citrus fruits, which are truly acidic foods because they contain citric acid—until they enter the body. So just because lemons are acidic, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy them! In fact, a few drops of lemon juice in your water can be a “pHenomenal” alkaline booster.

How does it work? During the process of digestion, foods change their chemistry. Energy is derived from foods by oxidation similar to the burning of fuel in a stove. And as in a stove, there is always an ash or residue. The residue that occurs in the human body as a result of the burning of foods is termed as “ash” and has a definite chemical reaction. Some foods leave an “acid ash” and are therefore known as “acid-forming foods.”

Other foods leave an “alkaline ash” and are therefore known as “alkaline-forming foods.” To clarify this point, please remember that the acid and alkaline reaction described above occurs AFTER digestion and assimilation, and these terms do not indicate the chemistry of the foods BEFORE digestion. Therefore, do not assume that all acid foods are acid forming, and vice versa.

After reading the extensive food list earlier you might ask, “So what is a person to do—to eat only alkaline-forming foods, and eliminate all the acid forming foods altogether?” No, you can eat tomatoes and acid-forming fruits and vegetables as long as you balance them with other foods. You don’t have to give up your favorite foods to get your body in a healthy balance.

It turns out that our goal is to find an “alkaline balance,” which can be accomplished by eating predominately alkaline foods along with minimal acidic foods. This, of course, takes some serious consideration of how to prepare foods, how to shop, how to combine foods to achieve this alkaline balance, and how to keep from getting “alkaline burnout.” This term alkaline burnout refers to the enthusiastic beginner who starts eating vegetarian only to become disillusioned when former food cravings come back with a vengeance.

The 80/20 Rule

As mentioned, most chronic diseases and many aches and pains are associated with acidosis. A good rule to follow is the 80/20 rule, where you eat 80% alkaline forming foods and 20% acid-forming foods. The easier way is to read over the list but don’t memorize or follow it in detail. Because what do you notice about the list? Can you see some patterns?

The Simple Pattern to Follow

Notice that in the acidic foods list you find nearly all meats, processed foods, refined flours, pasteurized dairy, extracted oils, cooked grains, chemicalized beverages, vegetables, and fruits that have been altered in some way (except a few), sweets, and drugs. Also note that whenever we cook, boil, process, freeze, or otherwise alter foods they become acid-forming in the body. The main exceptions to foods on the acid forming list not being a “whole food” are certain nuts, seeds, and starchy vegetables. This is why when you look over the alkaline foods list you will recognize foods that are high in fiber, enzymes, micronutrients, minerals, vitamins, and otherwise “live foods.”

Now it becomes easier to remember to eat 80% or more from the “live foods” list (alkaline-forming foods) and less than 20% from the dead (acid-forming foods).

Fast Foods and the Acid/Alkaline Balance

Of course, it’s best to avoid fast food altogether, but sometimes it is not possible. We get busy and end up on the run, trying to find some health options at the drive through. Well, if you balance some acid-forming foods with alkaline-forming foods and remember to balance all those later during the day with whole, natural foods, then it won’t be that bad.

You can even look for options such as a grilled chicken salad instead of the fried chicken sandwich, or just grab a vegetarian wrap instead of a burger. Most fast food chains these days offer smaller portions and healthier sides such as salads or fruit cups. Just watch out for added sugar and fats in the dressings.

For example, if you eat acids foods like:

  • Burritos

  • Hot dogs

  • Chicken nuggets

  • Hamburgers

  • Tacos

  • Biscuits

Then balance it with alkaline foods like:

  • Baked potato

  • Green/chef salad

  • Hash browns

And instead of the sugar-loaded soft drink or sweet tea, ask for water with lemon, which will turn into an alkaline booster once in your system!

Is Your Body In Balance? Check This List

It’s no secret that your body is made up of about 70 percent water. Every one of your 100 trillion cells is filled with water. And every other chemical in your body—from the stomach acid you need to digest food… to the blood that carries oxygen and nutrients to the cells of all your organs—either contain water or are suspended in water.

Therefore, for you to be healthy, that water needs to have a healthy pH balance—even out into the tissues of the organs where metabolism actually occurs. The letters “pH” mean “potential of hydrogen” and simply measure how acidic or alkaline your body is on a logarithmic scale from 0 to 14.

Your body will work hard to keep your organ tissues in pH balance. You will achieve optimum health much easier when your organ tissues stay in a slightly alkaline environment—about 7.0 to 7.5 as measured by saliva.

Blood pH is very different, however. It remains in the 7.34 to 7.38 pH range normally. And urine is normally acidic at a pH of 6.2 to 6.8 upon your first morning bathroom visit. What some people don’t realize is that saliva is a fairly good reflection of tissue pH which can vary, while blood pH will be one of the very last things to change in a sick person.

Is an acidic pH balance behind YOUR symptoms? Take this simple test:

  • Do you suffer from high blood pressure, a failing heart or other heart problems?
  • Do your joints feel stiff, inflamed and painful or do you suffer from bone loss?
  • Has a doctor told you that your blood sugar levels are too high or too low?

  • Do you suffer from constant fatigue or energy crashes after meals?
  • Do you frequently endure cramping, constipation, heartburn or other digestive problems?

  • Have you noticed that your ability to solve problems or to remember details is lacking?
  • Do you sometimes suffer from shortness of breath or other lung problems?
  • Do you experience pain, numbness or tingling in your hands, legs or feet?
  • Is your skin or hair aging more rapidly than they should?
  • Do you notice that your eyesight or hearing is fading at an alarming rate?
  • Do you suffer from low sexual desire or performance problems?
  • Do you contract infections more often with each passing year?

The simple rule to remember is the 80/20 rule. It’s beneficial for your diet to consist of 80 percent whole foods such as fruits, non-starchy vegetables, soy products, limited amounts of lean meats, whole grains and beans… and only 20 percent of acid-forming foods such as commercially processed pasta, fast food, frozen foods, crackers, cookies and most sugary cereals.

In addition to the best nutrition you can consume, the next step is to supplement with alkalizing minerals.

Unbalanced Body Chemistry Can Wreck Your Health

When you’re born, you’re at the height of your health… and your pH levels are in a nearly perfect alkaline balance. But if you’re like most folks, you pay very little attention to balancing your body chemistry. Yet to be healthy, you must be in acid/alkaline pH balance—and slightly on the side of alkalinity. An infant is highly alkaline… an 80-year-old person is highly acid… and death is 100 percent acidity.

This critical balance between acidity and alkalinity is measured on a scale of 0 to 14 known as the pH—or “potential of hydrogen.” On this scale, 0 to 7.0 is acid, 7.0 is neutral and 7.0 to 14 is alkaline. If you’re a healthy person with perfectly balanced pH, you would have a reading of about 7.4 in your blood and about 7.25 in your tissues. However, most people fall in the acid range of 6.2 to 6.4.

Why? Take a look at the three main reasons why we are so far below the healthy alkaline range:

  • Stress—If you’re alive and working in America, you’re swimming in stress. This is a big reason for an increase in acid production.
  • Dehydration—Seven out of 10 of us are chronically dehydrated. This means we suffer from dehydration fatigue, sluggish metabolism and an urge to eat all the time. Our thirst mechanism lacks strength and is often mistaken for hunger.
  • Poor Diet—As you age you become more acidic because you build up more acid waste due mainly to a diet poor in nutrition. Most people eat 80 percent acid foods and only 20 percent alkaline foods. However, you should reverse that in order to be healthy.

Foods such as beef, pork, pasta, hamburgers, hot dogs, frozen snack foods, crackers, cookies, rice and most sugar cereals are acid-forming and commercially processed. These are the foods that most Americans live on. Sugar and artificial sweeteners (except Stevia) are even bigger culprits. And soft drinks are the real dangers with a high acid pH level of 2.5!

And while we devour the health-robbing acid-based foods, we turn up our noses at the good guys—alkaline-forming foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans and other foods high in fiber. This is a way of life that spells disaster for our health.

Just as acid can ruin your car battery, this is what acid overload can do to your body:

  • Eats away at the linings of your arteries and increases your chances of both brain and cardiovascular problems
  • Erodes cartilage and causes inflamed joints
  • Damages skin cells which contributes to premature wrinkling and other aging issues

But that’s not the only damage you face. Excess acid can cause blood sugar problems… high blood pressure… calcium-deprived bones… low energy… poor circulation… sexual problems… sleep problems… leg cramps… and a host of other issues.

In fact, in his popular book, Alkalize or Die, Theodore A. Baroody, M.A., D.C., N.D., Ph.D., shook the scientific world with the statement, “The countless names of illnesses do not really matter. What does matter is that they all come from the same root cause… TOO MUCH ACID IN THE BODY!”

However, by understanding the importance of the acid/alkaline balance in your body—and taking steps to reverse the acid dominance—you can halt your march toward poor health.

Rid Your Body of Toxins and Parasites with Simple Liquid Fasting

Liquid cleansing and fasting have been an integral part of natural medicine for more than 100 years. Thousands of people have discovered restored health through fasting. Dr. Herbert Shelton was one of the founders of the American Natural Hygiene Society, and during his lifetime he supervised more than 40,000 fasts. His greatest tool for assisting patients in reversing disease was to assist them to safely go without food while drinking only water or juice for three to five days, or as long as 30 days.

Simple juice fasts are a great way to quickly purify the body and prepare it for healing. The three-day juice fast will clean mucus out the body and provide you with nutritious, vibrant foods and supplements that rebuild the system and facilitate healing.

Freshly extracted, raw, organic juices are ideal because they contain high amounts of valuable enzymes that not only help you digest the juice, but also exert a powerful healing influence on the body. If, however, you do not have access to a juicer you may use pure, organic, bottled juices that are purchased from local health food stores. Do not use frozen concentrates or juices with added sugar. Use one juice for at least three days. Choose a favorite juice (apple, carrot, citrus, tomato, barley grass, grape, etc.), but use only one for at least three consecutive days.

Do not eat anything during the three days if possible. If absolutely necessary, the matching fruit or vegetable from which you are making juice may be eaten. If you are drinking apple juice, then eat only apples if you feel the need to eat.

When you stop eating foods that contain bulk and fiber, the bowel may stop moving resulting in constipation. Toxic mucous being eliminated from your system can also cause constipation. To prevent these issues from occurring, drink 16 ounces of prune juice first thing upon arising in the morning. If you are still having problems, you may introduce colon cleansing through the use of enemas.

Dr. Christopher, noted herbalist, taught that we must eat our drink and drink our food. Chewing juice ensures proper digestion by mixing it with enzymes found in the mouth. Swish each mouthful thoroughly.

On the fourth day, introduce vegetable organic juices and raw fruits and vegetables. After the fourth day, you may also introduce steamed foods.

You will experience cleansing symptoms on your juice program. You may notice aches and pains, headaches, weakness and other symptoms as your body eliminates toxins and poisons. This is a natural reaction by your body. Be strong since these symptoms result in faster cleansing and healing.

Another powerful ingredient to aid in your detoxification is the herb milk thistle. Ancient Romans and Greeks often used milk thistle as a remedy for liver problems. Many modern medical practitioners also believe milk thistle is one of the most effective herbs for relieving liver disorders and related problems.

Your liver is like a "traffic cop" for many activities that occur in your body. For example, it eliminates or neutralizes toxins in the blood. It also plays a role in controlling infection.

Milk thistle contains a chemical substance called silymarin, which is believed to help:

  • Cleanse and detoxify your liver.
  • Relieve inflammation of liver cells (hepatitis).
  • Treat symptoms of a scarred liver (cirrhosis) from excess alcohol consumption.

Research shows milk thistle may also help protect your kidneys from damage caused by chemotherapy medications. It can even play a role in protecting your prostate from abnormal cell growth.

Uncle Sam Did Something Right

In 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt summoned his personal friend, famed sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, to the White House. His request: Please design new coinage for the United States. Roosevelt wanted our coins modeled on the coins of ancient Greece, the birthplace of democracy.

Although in failing health, Saint-Gaudens accepted what would become his last challenge. He produced a stunning design that many consider to be the most beautiful coin ever produced… the $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. Sadly, Saint-Gaudens died without ever seeing his magnificent coin enter circulation.

The Saint-Gaudens $20 Double Eagle was minted from 1907 to 1933. The last gold coin struck by the U.S. Mint for regular issue, it remains a proud symbol of the emerging greatness of the United States in the early part of the 20th Century. In 1933, during the height of the Depression, a different Roosevelt, Franklin Delano, outlawed private ownership of gold by Americans. Production of new gold coins was halted and gold coins in circulation were confiscated. Double Eagles were melted down and added to the Treasury’s horde of gold. The few that weren’t seized are now highly prized collectibles.

In 1975, U.S. citizens were again permitted to own gold. At the time the bullion coin of choice was the South African Krugerrand. For many reasons our government wanted to issue its own gold coin. A representative of the U.S. Mint came to my office in Washington, DC and purchased a variety of gold coins. I was the executive vice president of Deak-Perera then, a company that specialized in foreign currencies, including gold and silver coins. They purchased gold coins minted in South Africa, Austria, and yes, even Mexico.

A few years later the U.S. Mint announced the production of a new American coin—the gold Eagle. It was available in four denominations: 1-oz, ½-oz, ¼-oz, and 1/10-oz of gold. The obverse featured a redesign of the classic Augustus Saint-Gaudens design.

I’m proud to say that during the first year of issue, 1986, my new company, Asset Strategies International, helped a major precious-metals company pre-sell more of these new American gold coins than any other company in the U.S. One day alone we shipped 600 registered packages throughout the country. Over the course of a year literally thousands of gold coins passed through our offices. The Eagle had definitely landed!

In 1986, the U.S. Mint added a silver dollar to its offerings. The silver Eagle contains 1 ounce of silver and has a face value of $1. The mint wisely chose to use Adolph A. Weinman’s “Walking Liberty” design on the obverse of the coin. To say it is classically beautiful is an understatement. It is a joy to hold in your hand—and an even bigger delight to drop on your desk where it makes that unique “silver on wood” clink that Americans haven’t heard in years.

There is much that our government has done and wants to do with which we could quarrel. But no one can deny that it makes the most beautiful modern coinage in the world. And you can own some for a small premium over the spot price of their gold and silver content!

The best way to purchase these gorgeous coins is through a reputable coin dealer. You’ll find a list of recommended dealers on the website for the U.S. Mint, www.usmint.gov. I’m proud to note that ASI has been included there for many years.

Because demand can rise and fall, so can premiums. Get two or three different quotes before you buy. (And never, never give your business to mass marketers, who always have the highest premiums around. How do you think they can afford all that advertising?)

With gold hovering around $1,000 an ounce, the gold American Eagle is admittedly expensive. Remember, you can purchase versions as small as 1/10th ounce. But note: the smaller the coin, the higher the premium.

An even better investment, in my opinion, is the silver American Eagle. You can purchase this classic American beauty for less than $20 each. As the price of silver continues to climb (something I think is all but inevitable) your coins could turn out to be a superb investment.

When I was growing up, on every birthday, my parents gave me a bright, shiny silver dollar. I still have those coins, mostly for sentimental reasons. But they’ve also soared in value. If you’d like your children to know what “real money” used to look like, you might consider doing the same. After all, the only thing that’s still good as gold is gold… or maybe silver.
