BAGHDAD, Aug. 4 (UPI) — Three Iraqis serving prison terms in Kuwait for attempting to assassinate former U.S. President George H.W. Bush have been pardoned, officials said Thursday.

The trio are part of a group of nine Iraqis imprisoned in Kuwait for their involvement in security breaches, the newspaper Al-Angaa reported.

Prison officials were told to refer the three to the Deportation Administration to complete their repatriation to Iraq.

The Arab Times said the three conspired to bomb Bush’s motorcade during his visit to Kuwait in 1993.

The assassination plot was led by Ra’ad Al-Asady, a former intelligence services employee.
