  • Oh, my goodness! The U.S. Treasury Department is warning that the economy could plunge into a downturn worse than the Great Recession if Congress fails to raise the federal borrowing limit and the country defaults on its debt obligations. A default could cause the nation’s credit markets to freeze, the value of the dollar to plummet and U.S. interest rates to skyrocket, according to the Treasury report released Thursday. • By a 48-39 percent margin, voters say they trust Republicans in Congress more than President Barack Obama when it comes to cutting government spending enough to make a difference in the deficit while at the same time not cutting so much that valuable programs are hurt. • Perhaps Obama’s biggest failing has been his inability to build relationships and make deals on Capitol Hill – a shortcoming in sharp relief during the ongoing debate over a health care law that didn’t win a single Republican vote. Even Democratic members complain they get short shrift from a detached White House and that Obama’s crusade for the controversial health care law laid the groundwork for the rise of an intransigent tea party. Longtime lobbyist Charlie Black noted that it was Vice President Joe Biden who reached a last-minute agreement with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff at the start of this year. “The president wasted 17 months, and in one weekend the old pros made a deal,” Black said. “All the president knows how to do is campaign and attack.” Source: National Journal…

  • As the “shutdown” enters its fourth day, the White House Office of Management and Budget has apparently had enough of recalcitrant veterans breaking past barricades at the WWII memorial at the National Mall. Now the Park Service is stringing the barricades together with steel wire (visit the link for a photo.) Source: Weasel Zippers…

  • Vice President Joe Biden is proud of the National Park Service ranger who stood up to Rep. Randy Neugebauer at the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. On Thursday, video surfaced online of Neugebauer, a Texas Republican, angrily lecturing the ranger for setting up barricades to the memorial. ‘I’m proud of you,’ Biden said, according to his office’s Twitter account, revealing that the vice president had called the ranger to thank her for her service. • A high school principal has apologized for forcing a 16-year-old student to remove her National Rifle Association shirt last month. Haley Bullwinkle, a sophomore at Canyon High School, said she was asked to change or face suspension because her T-shirt, which featured a buck, an American flag, and a hunter’s silhouette, violated the school’s dress code and promoted gun violence.
