Workplace Bullying Hurts Bottom Line

NEW YORK (UPI) — Workplace bullying is a major cause of stress — and expense — that can leave employees feeling hurt, angry, frightened and depressed, a U.S. author says.
Paul Huljich, the author of the book “Stress Pandemic,” said, “If you work with others, you’ll be bullied at some point in your career.”
Workplace bullying is clearly costly for employees as well as employers, Huljich said.
“About 45 percent of individuals targeted by bullies at work suffer stress-related health problems, a Zogby survey found in 207 and that could include cardiovascular problems, an impaired immune system, debilitating anxiety and even post-traumatic stress disorder,” Gary Namie, director of the Workplace Bullying Institute, said in a statement.
Workplace bullying results in higher healthcare costs and more absenteeism, which in turn, increases stress throughout the workplace.
Create an awareness of how other people are making you feel, and if they aren’t treating you right then stand up for yourself or seek help, Huljich said.
