Woman Returned To U.S. To Face 15-Year-Old Drunk-Driving Charges

PORTLAND, Ore., (UPI) —  A woman who bragged in a Canadian bar that she killed someone in Oregon while driving drunk will face trial in the United States after 15 years, officials say.

Jean Terese Keating, now 54, was arrested earlier this year in Minnedosa, Manitoba, where she had lived for the past decade and a half, The Oregonian reported.

She had fled Oregon in 1998 while awaiting trial in a fatal crash that killed Jewel Oline Anderson the year before.

Keating and her 3-year-old daughter and 1-year-old son ended up in Minnedosa, a town of about 2,500, where she took the name Jean McPherson.

Oregon State Police said her true identity, and her secret, were uncovered after she mentioned in a Minnedosa bar that she had skipped out on her trial on the drunk-driving charges.

Early this year, someone tipped off a Royal Canadian Mounted Police constable in town about the woman’s statement. He contacted law enforcement agencies in the United States, and investigators eventually matched McPherson’s fingerprint with those of Keating in Oregon taken at the time of her 1997 arrest.

She was arrested April 4 at her home in Minnedosa and deported in June. Keating was returned to Oregon by U.S. marshals last week.

The suspect is being held at the Linn County Jail in lieu of $5 million bond.
