Will Your Child Be Safe At School If A Pandemic Strikes?

Will Your Child Be Safe At School If A Pandemic Strikes?

These days, everyone from your neighbor to your employer and, hopefully, you may be developing preparedness plans in the event of bioterrorist attacks or flu pandemics. Unfortunately, your child’s school is likely to be very unprepared.

Despite warnings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about the dire consequences that faced the Nation in 2009 during the H1N1 influenza pandemic-that-wasn’t resulted in 18,000 deaths worldwide, many U.S. schools are not prepared for bioterrorism attacks, outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases or pandemics, according to a study by researchers at Saint Louis University’s Institute for Biosecurity.

The study, led by Terri Rebmann, Ph.D., surveyed about 2,000 nurses working in elementary, middle and high schools across 26 States. Findings revealed that only 48 percent of schools address pandemic preparedness and only 40 percent of schools have updated their plans since the 2009 H1N1 scare that affected 214 countries.

“There is a lot of research that shows influenza spreads quickly in schools because it’s a communicable disease and kids interact closely,” Professor Rebmann said. “Schools need to have a written pandemic plan in order to be prepared to put interventions into place quickly when an event occurs.”

Published in the American Journal of Infection Control, the study also found that 44 percent of schools do not participate in community surveillance that tracks the presence of a disease based upon symptoms reported by area residents. These efforts are coordinated through local public health departments that assess indicators of biological threats.

“Health care professionals can best inform school administrators about unique aspects of pandemic planning that need to be included in school disaster plans,” Rebmann said. “Results from this study indicate that better prepared schools were ones that involved their nurses in the disaster planning committee. The school nurse is the best person in a school district to know about infection control and be able to make recommendations about the best interventions to implement during a biological event.”

Better make sure your kids have their shots.

    • Bob Livingston

      Dear Robert Smith,

You write: “Better make sure your kids have their shots.” Yes so they increase their chances of getting sick.

      Best wishes,

      • Chester

Bob, have you had your polio shots? How about all the immunizations you were REQUIRED to take if you were in the military? IF you have dodged all those, and NEVER been sick, you can say it worked, FOR YOU. Personally, I have taken just about every shot necessary to keep me from catching the flu, or most of the other communicable diseases, and some that are not classed as communicable, such as tetanus. I have seen first hand what the polio vaccine has prevented, and have heard enough about what refusing the smallpox vaccine is beginning to do, that I am more worried about people like you preaching all vaccines are bad than I am about the vaccines themselves. Incidentally, I remember when chicken pox and measles ran through the schools very, very regularly, as in nearly every winter, and it was not unusual to have a quarter or more of a class missing due to one or the other of those.

        • Bob Livingston

          Dear Chester,

You write: ” I have seen first hand what the polio vaccine has prevented…” I have addressed you on this very same topic before. But once again, you have been lied to:

“But already before Salk developed his vaccine, polio had been constantly regressing; the 39 cases out of every 100,000 inhabitants registered in 1942 had gradually diminished from year to year until they were reduced to only 15 cases in 1952… according to M. Beddow Baylay, the English surgeon and medical historian.” (Slaughter of the Innocent, Hans Reusch, Civitas Publish ers, Switzerland, and Swain, New York, 1983)

“So far it is hardly possible to gain insight into the extent of the immunization catastrophe of 1955 in the United States. It may be considered certain that the officially ascertained 200 cases (of polio) which were caused directly or indirectly by the (polio) vaccination constitute minimum figures… It can hardly be estimated how many of the 1359 (polio) cases among vaccinated persons must be regarded as failures of the vaccine and how many of them were infected by the vaccine. A careful study of the epidemiologic course of polio in the United States yields indications of grave significance. In numerous states of the U.S.A., typical early epidemics developed with the immunizations in the spring of 1955… The vaccination incidents of the year 1955 cannot be exclusively traced back to the failure of one manufacturing firm.” (Dr. Herbert Ratner, Child and Family, 1980, vol. 19, no. 4, “Story of the Salk Vaccine,” Part 2)

“Suffice it to say that most of the large (polio) epidemics that have occurred in this country since the introduction of the Salk vaccine have followed the wide-scale use of the vaccine and have been characterized by an uncommon early seasonal onset. To name a few, there is the Massachusetts epidemic of 1955; the Chicago epidemic of 1956; and the Des Moines epidemic of 1959.” (Dr. Herbert Ratner, Child and Family, 1980 vol. 19, no. 4)

“The live (Sabin) poliovirus vaccine has been the predominant cause of domestically arising cases of paralytic poliomyelitis in the United States since 1972. To avoid the occurrence of such cases, it would be necessary to discontinue the routine use of live poliovirus vaccine.” (Jonas Salk, Science, March 4, 1977, p. 845)”

And I write more about here: Go to the end of the article.

          Best wishes,

      • tlgeer

Most of the current vaccines do not use live virus’s.

As the daughter of a polio victim, I can positively assert that taking the steps necessary to make sure that this disease is wiped out as much as possible is worth any side effects of the vaccine. My Mom, and her cousin, got polio in the early 1950′s. My Mom was almost put in an “Iron Lung”. About 25 years ago, the muscles that were affected by the polio started losing strength again. It is called “Post Polio Syndrome”. She is now 72 and has to use an electric wheelchair because of her lack of muscle strength. We do everything that we can do to make sure that her lungs will not be the next thing that starts losing strength.

If you want to say that the vaccines don’t work, or are more dangerous than the diseases themselves, tell it to someone else. I know for a fact that they are not.

As for the Influenza virus’s, they have been around for thousands of years. Along with Diphtheria, Tetanus, Chicken Pox, Measles, Rubella, Mumps, etc. They are all serious and none of them are new. The fact that so many people come through them ok does not lessen the serious issues of what the diseases can do, and have done.

In my genealogical and historical research’s, the millions of people who have died from these diseases is staggering. So is the fact that so many people are willing to harm themselves, and the people around them, by not getting vaccinated.

Don,t bet your childrens lives on public officals or school administrator,s to be making any real plans beyound a paper tiger. I have talked to teacher,s who had heard nothing about Pandemic outbreak planning long after it was mandated for schools to do. Public officals downplay the potencial threat to the public at large and do not know how to prevent the spread aside from telling everyone to get vaccinated. Tourism is more important for example than warning the public of beaches highly contaminated by gull dropping,s. Building rooftops and athletic fields are often littered with gull dropping,s which carry many disease,s through worldwide migration,s. The seven year,s of research I,ve done has led to these conclusion,s. I know what steps need to be taken. Jeff Schukow, owner, Graetlakes Avian Pest Control.

What is the message……….government should be DOING SOMETHING or NOT DOING SOMETHING?

It would seem that the “libertarian” message and the Personal Liberty Digest message are a bit bi-polar?

Regulation is bad for business…’s the economy stupid……..corporations are people,
immortal and they don’t have health concerns……..clearly we have a labor glut, which is
    ideal for capitalists………

“A man must live by his work, and his wages must be at least enough to maintain him. They must even on most occasions be somewhat more: otherwise it would be impossible for him to bring up a family and the RACE of such workmen could not last beyond the first generation.”

The problem is government funded health care for these parasites who are NOT immortal and who do have health concerns………

Confused? ( you should be but for those who think government is the PROBLEM,
    there is NO CONFUSION………)

“To conquer, first DIVIDE!” ( and then HANG, separately! )

    • ChristyK

Galt, Bob is not saying that the governent should regulate vaccines. He is saying that the government shouldn’t say things are safe and mandatory when they are not safe or are at least questionably safe. What I would like to see is a voluntary 3rd party evaluation of drug’s effectiveness and safety. I, as a consumer, would choose a drug that was deemed safe by a 3rd party. I don’t think the government should be involved with drugs at all. I, as an informed consumer, would study 3rd party evaluations and only buy drugs that I, with consultation with my doctor, believed was safe and would be effective for my condition. The government should not say what I should or should not take.

I am an electrical engineer. Most electronics are certified safe by either CE or UL which are 3rd party evaluators paid by the electronics manufacturers. If CE or UL starts certifying electronics as safe when they are not, then consumers will stop looking for their certification. If consumers do not value the certification, then the manufacturers will stop paying for the evaluation. It is in the best interest of CE and UL to do a thorough and accurate evaluation. It works much better than the government evaluators that get paid no matter if they do a good job or not and become friends with those they are evaluating so they rarely give a bad evaluation, at least to their big, old friends therefore favoring the existing large companies.

      • GALT

Interesting point……….but somewhat similar to the “rating agencies” that certified the
derivative investments that crashed the economy by rating them AAA, and now suggests
that U.S. credit instruments might need to be downgraded?

I understand your opinion, and I agree with the sentiment……in a perfect world, fully informed consent should be sufficient for all manner of personal choice……..

But the question still remains………for this and every issue…….

1.) What is the role of government?

2.) Is “self regulation” a viable or intelligent choice? ( there are still 87 trillion dollars in
unregulated derivatives lurking in the world economy )

3.) Is government the problem or is corrupted government the problem?

Unfortunately, there is a distinction in the last question which is ignored…..and this would be fine if the world were PERFECT…….as “free market economics” both suggests and requires……….

Even for your example you need some means of “policing the police”…….

I am an RN. I took care of many patients with Guillien Barre syndrome, an adverse reaction to the swine flu vaccine. the people had total paralysis starting from the feet and going up to the neck. It required that they go on ventilators for months if they survived. Better, monitor your family’s urine pH. Keep it at 6.8 to 7.0. Avoid junk and processed foods. Teach them handwashing. Eat lots of fruits and veggies. Take good supplements including plenty of vitamin C and echinicea. Avoid all sodas, very acidic. A healthy body doesn’t get sick. Drink water, juices or herbal teas. Many vaccines have caused worse conditions than the flu. I do advise the pneumonia vaccine. I took it in 1980 and have not had the vaccine or pneumonia since then.

Galt i think its pretty much telling you that if something does break out, get your child out of school immediately! Who knows the way public schools are, if one kid comes down with plague or something; it would only be fair to infect the entire class!

    • GALT

Really? I imagine that can be said for everything I read here and elsewhere……but
thank you for the clarification…….. unfortunately it wasn’t my question, nor my point.

Galt, you typed this right? What is the message……….government should be DOING SOMETHING or NOT DOING SOMETHING? So the sentence with the ? after it was a ?, which I responded to. Hey Aristotle try this, why not ask a question or make a statement; and not talk like a confused child searching for an excuse or an answer to an adults question.

    • GALT

I am not responsible for your functional illiteracy……or your inability to find a reply
button which in this instance is fairly easy( and you missed it twice)……..since it is within the body of my post.

Did you answer the question? It does not appear that you did, since it had two choices?

Did you comprehend the question? No, because it was rhetorical…….

Did you comprehend the rest of the post? Obviously not.

Did you comprehend the response to your ( misplaced ) reply? Clearly not…….you chose to take issue.

It would seem that a little refresher re:Aristotle is in order, and a little less mindless

  • Kevin Wickham

“Pandemics” are nothing more than more scare propaganda from Corporate Whore Media.

Galt the Aristotle remark was sarcasm, do you get it? you know how you think your some kind of enlightened being! Guy, talk like a human being! I look forward to your posts tomorrow that you steal from other authors, it should be blah once again. Heres a tip try just talking about one of the articles for once, instead of posting a bunch of dribble and then talking down to people because they have no idea what your sociaopath head is thinking. Nice life dude, getting your rocks off saying absolutely nothing, ( like you do everyday) and then talk down to people for not caring what you say. Ok so heres what you do, next article you want to post on just say something like ” i like this article” or ” i dont like this article” and reasons why you are yea or nea for the authors opinion. And then give yourself a lollipop and wait for the other readers to post their comments. And then, (i know you dont do this alot in your moms basement) but you sort of have a conversation with another human being, by posting a reply to their post. Then have your mom make you a pb and j sandwich and juice box while others post to your reply. And then you go back and forth. Ok go get your nap and look forward to your moronic post tomorrow.

    • GALT

Still can’t find the reply button? You should have mentioned you were a FAN……that
way citing you as irrelevant and inconsequential could have been done immediately…..

BTW there is no way to talk UP to stupid people……especially when they INSIST on
making sure you know it………as for the “author”…….this is his business……a fact most of
you haven’t caught on to yet……..his purpose is quite clear…….of course, it does involve another “button”……….have fun…… reply necessary.

      • CBUETT

Here you go Ms Galt reply button just for you. Ms Galt ive said more in one post than all of yours. Your a pretty stupid person, your posts show this so when you have something knowledgeable to post I’ll pay attention. And cutting and pasting isnt posting.

      • GALT

No one was talking to you ( initially )…….and since you are both functionally illiterate as well as a……. w.i. A.L.F. no one is talking to you now……….I’m glad you found the reply button, but the phrase “no response required” means exactly what is says.

      • CBUETT

Well actually Ms Galt you moron, your response was to me so you were talking to me you simple minded misses. And Moron if I was illiterate I wouldn’t be typing and spelling out words you genius! Hey go kick your moms dog and have a great night.

      • GALT

Dear “functional illiterate”, I responded to a post by you, addressing me… initial post was to the author…… failed to grasp the meaning of the question or demonstrate
any comprehension regarding the post, not directed to you…….and you continue to insist
on confirming this………even though, that you have been fully acknowledged as “irrelevant and inconsequential”………how many MORE times will you continue to seek this recognition?

      • CBUETT

Hey Moron dont try to squirm your way out of your last posting to me and making a idiot out of yourself. I called you out, which was my focus at the beginning. You took the bait, You posted to make yourself look like a narcissistic ass, like you do everyday and hook line and sinker. I see your posts all the time. Your a tool who sits on the blogs and tries to make his crappy life have some relevance. Have at it Dude, I’m going home to my family. Blog on Dork. No reply needed

      • GALT

What you imagine you have done has been duly noted……you are irrelevant and inconsequential……..feel free to confirm this AGAIN!!!!!!

Galt by the way the Author is pretty much saying dont trust your child to the school they attend if a pandemic or serious health concern arises. Thats pretty much it.

  • Gord5467

I was with the Canadian Military in 2009, and was ordered to get the H1N1 shot (AREPANRIX by GSK GlaxoSmithKline). I had an adverse reaction to the vaccine which included PERMANENT neurological, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and respiratory symptoms. It’s difficult to believe but I now have dizziness, vertigo, irregular heart rhythms, shortness of breath, muscle weakness and pain, and numbness moving up my body, to name but a few of the serious symptoms. I went from special forces fit to that of a 70 year old in a matter of days. According the a recent UK study “UK Suspected Adverse Reaction Analysis, Swine Flue (H1N1) Vaccines”, 26 March 2010, the Annex 1 provides a detailed list of the adverse reactions, many of which were not listed in the original manufacturers vaccine literature. Please choose wisely if you do plan to have your next flu shot or vaccination. You may also ask your doctor and other Heath care workers if they will be getting these shots. My doctor flat out said “no way”.
