Will The Assault Weapon Ban Return?

September 12, 2012 by

Tomorrow marks the eighth anniversary of the expiration of the Federal assault weapons ban put into place in 1994 by the Administration of President Bill Clinton. And even after eight years, the fight from anti-gun lobbies to reinstate the ban is still full force.

Last week, the Democratic Party included in its platform — just as it has every four years since the ban expired — a commitment to reinstating the ban that disallowed Americans the right to legally own certain semi-automatic rifles and magazines that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition.

Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) has promised to introduce legislation to reinstate the ban as early as next year. The success of her efforts will be determined largely by the outcome of the Presidential election. President Barack Obama has already made it remarkably clear that he strongly supports reinstatement of the ban, which will likely become a reality under a second term. Furthermore, some pundits expect at least three Supreme Court appointments to be made during the next Presidential Administration; Obama appointments could spell disaster for gun rights.

Though Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney is not often noted for his extreme devotion to the 2nd Amendment, he has been outspoken on the side of those who oppose reinstating the assault weapons ban.

Another key component of fighting legislation like what Feinstein has promised to introduce is the election of gun-friendly Senators in Senate battleground States.

Without paying attention to Senate races, making sure that Obama is not re-elected and that a Romney Administration would follow through with 2nd Amendment promises (instead of reverting to the candidate’s previous anti-gun stances), there is little hope in winning the battle against America’s gun grabbers.

      Hey Sam,

How’s come you haven’t given us a quote from the Democratic platform that supports what you are talking about?

      Rob

      • Allan Harrison

Hey Robert hows about you crawl out from under your rock and look around, it’s all over the news.

      • vicki

Hey robert. I’ll do even better than a quote. Here is a link to one of over 50,000 articles.

        http://www.democraticunderground.com/117270493

      • Robert Smith

Lots of “suggested” but still no direct link to the DNC platform and a quote from it.

Lots of claims from the right, but no substance.

        Rob

      • Vicki

Robert Smith demonstrates leading a horse to water but you can’t make him drink by writing:
“Lots of “suggested” but still no direct link to the DNC platform and a quote from it.

Lots of claims from the right, but no substance.”

Will this do for you robert? http://www.democrats.org/democratic-national-platform

      • Robert Smith

Vicki asks: “Will this do for you robert?”

No, it will not. Give us a DIRECT QUOTE. That’s what is claimed, but has not yet been produced.

Think of it as chapter and verse.

If it ain’t real I don’t understand what all the hysteria is about.

Dear Robert Smith troll that you are try the words as written by the Democratic National Platfrom.
“Firearms. We recognize that the individual right to bear arms is an important part of the American tradition, and we will preserve Americans’ Second Amendment right to own and use firearms. We believe that the right to own firearms is subject to reasonable regulation. We understand the terrible consequences of gun violence; it serves as a reminder that life is fragile, and our time here is limited and precious. We believe in an honest, open national conversation about firearms. We can focus on effective enforcement of existing laws, especially strengthening our background check system, and we can work together to enact commonsense improvements—like reinstating the assault weapons ban and closing the gun show loophole—so that guns do not fall into the hands of those irresponsible, law-breaking few.”
        http://www.democrats.org/democratic-national-platform

      • Vicki

Robert Smith demonstrates that shoving the horses nose in the water won’t make him drink either by writing:
“Vicki asks: “Will this do for you robert?”

No, it will not. Give us a DIRECT QUOTE.”

I trust that the direct quote above (forced feeding of the horse does apparently make him drink) satisfies your desire for a direct quote.

What bewilders me about left wing drones is that every single study conducted by government and private study groups is that the 94-2004 Assault weapons ban showed zero positive influence on keeping Americans safe. Less than 2% of all gun violence involved “assault weapons”! And that term includes semi- automatic assault STYLED weapons. A true assault weapon is one capable of firing both semi, and full automatic. These weapons as properly defined are machine guns. They’re subject to registration with extensive background checks and a $200 tax per item with a 3-9 month wait. NOT TO MENTION SEVERAL THOUSAND DOLLARS TO BUY IT!!!! Of all the legal machine guns (AKA assault weapons), in the Federal registry managed by BATFE, there has been exactly ONE used in a crime. It was in 1989 by a Ohio cop who killed two people in his yard with it. You leftist drones are ignorant of guns!! You ALL fear what you don’t understand, and you hate what you fear!!!! On a side note. I hear from liberal anti gun people that firearms only belong in the hands of cops and military personnel. Ironically  Heinrich Himmler made a very similar argument that the ownership of firearms does not benefit the state, so those who wish to handle firearms should join the military, the police, or the SS. This man was the one person most directly responsible for the disarmament, segregation of, and elimination of the Jewish population under the 3rd reich. I willunder all circumstances use my weapons to protect the weak or defenseless. It just sucks that many of you are bleeding heart liberal drones are to F-ing stupid to research and learn about firearms in civilian hands.

Try being in New Orleans after Katrina. They came and took the guns and then the people.

  • Doc Sarvis

If it takes you more than 10 rounds to hit your target than you MUST be a conservative.

    • GGRAY

Not that it takes more than 10 rounds for one target, most of the targets will be the lefties, and may need several rounds to hit all the targets.

      • Doc Sarvis

They’re lucky if they can wing’em.

      • dan

….some of us are good enough to just wing ‘em

    • Robert Smith

Awwww Doc, don’t you know they are shooting at them there huge liberal zombies? They just don’t lay down simply because a right winger wants them to.

IOW, they don’t have the confidence in the correctness of their point of view that it will be accepted by America so they are ready to force it upon the rest of us.

Might I remind folks that I’m opposed to gun control, but they call me a “liberal” anyhow because I’m not goose stepping with them.

      Rob

      • JeffH

RS, yeah, even some liberals are opposed to gun control…but you’re still a liberal aren’t you?

      • Robert Smith

Actually NO, Jeff. I’m a Goldwater conservative.

BTW, Goldwater wasn’t opposed to gays in the military or abortion.

He wasn’t as into the “Southern Stratigy” of the extreme right.

        Rob

      • cawmun cents

HAW!….Pardon me Smith while I laugh…..you really arent a conservative at all.
Conservatives do not point at God for every problem they have with why things occur.
They figure out how to deal with those problems by changing the conditions.
So take your lies and put them where no light shines,in your progressive liberal heart.

And the democrats are trying to subjugate our Rights by a UN mandate which Obama and Hillary are trying to push to repress our rights under the Second Amendment

    • momo

There might be more than one target, hence more rounds are necessary.

    • Gary L

Why would I want to stop at 1 round?

      • dan

two-fers and three-fers and bankshots….that’s just the way I roll

    • box-bb-car

Only if we are aiming for the leftist’s brain. A much smaller target. If we tried to hit the center of logic therein, I’m not sure there is a good enough shot to hit something that small

      • USMCVeteran

Good point, liberal brain, very small brain.

      • http://Smgsupply.com 0331

I suggest a pellet gun, but on second thought a .17hmr or .22to get through the thick skulls.

What part of “shall not be abridged” do you and Frankenfeinstein not get?
      -CC.

      • Vicki

They are a little fuzzy on the definition of NOT. Then again Clinton couldn’t even handle the definition of IS so is it any wonder they are having trouble with words that have 3 letters?

    • cawmun cents

Actually if you have more than one target to shoot at at a time, which it seems obvious that Sarvis has never had to deal with, then you may need as many rounds as you can hold.
But although nobody I know of hits their targets with every shot like the immaculate Doc Sarvis(laughing),some have to shoot at more targets than can be found at the shooting range. Some even have to shoot at moving targets, which pose another set of conditions altogether.
And if the push to continue this one side vs the other, isnt stopped then very soon we mat possibly be at war with each other. In which case I will take the conservative side any time (because I have watched future democrats shoot in the streets, and they are in deep trouble from the consevatives I know!) Sorry Doc,but you will find yourself both outgunned and outqualified.
Incidentally….I own no assault weapons(and find that description offensive to begin with,as any weapon used for an assault would be an assault weapon IMHO),and often hit what I am shooting at.
Semi automatic weapons have a tendency to jam occasionally…a fact which I find unsatisfactory when it comes to using a weapon of any kind.If it jams when you need it most….it might as well be a club….in a gunfight.
      -CC.

    • 45caliber

      Doc:

The only reason to use 10 rounds is fire suppression. If the other guy has a gun, you use ten rounds to discourage him from shooting back as you try to shoot him. So that should answer your comment from someone who has done it.

      • http://Smgsupply.com 0331

45, 10 would be the minimum for suppression. I have several “ugly black rifles” including some pre-ban and two in larger calibers, but in a real life firefight as a civillian would you be able to defend yourself? An old and possibly out of date FBI report states that the average firefight is within 21 feet and closer. Given that I would go for the trusty 1911. If you need to suppress go for the belt fed.

    • http://yahoo free forever

Hey Doc, do you think you can stop a violent Flash Mob of 15 to 20+ or a rioting group bent on looting with 10 rounds. I hope you have a second magazine and can change it fast enough when they are charging and throwing things at you.

      • dan

I just take the number of targets and divide by the number of rounds I have available…it’s MATH

  • TexRancher

The first assault weapons ban was a fraud just as this one will! Nothing, but a foot in the door towards assaulting AMERICAN’S 2nd Amendment rights!
There are already laws governing real ASSAULT WEAPONS and they require a class III
license to own one. Why should we have another law in addition to the 20,000 gun laws on the books now and we can see just how well they work to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. So what’s the point? Oh, yeah I get it: Take guns from the honest people who have a right to self defense! Or make criminals out of those who refuse to give up their guns.
Real Americans don’t give up their guns and real AMERICANS don’t try to take them! Are you listening Democrats?

    • momo

The class III license covers machine guns and automatic assault rifles. The assault weapon ban covered semi-auto assault weapons. No matter how many laws are passed the bad guys will always end up with a gun.

      • 45caliber

        momo:

One of the reasons the bad guys always end up with a gun is because the governments are perfectly willing ot sell their guns to anyone in another country who wants one. They simply don’t want someone to sell them in their own country. The bad guys are willing to make the attempt (usually successful) to sneak a gun into their own country.

    • vicki

“There are already laws governing real ASSAULT WEAPONS and they require a class III
      license to own one. ”

In clear violation of the 2nd Amendment.

  • dan

the only assault weapon ban I can remember was signed by MITT ROMNEY as Gov of Mass
who signed a bill banning weapons that LOOKED like assault weapons dubbed the ugly gun ban.
Does anyone honestly believe he’d admit he was wrong and wouldn’t do it again ?

    • Doc Sarvis

He’s rolling back on his talk about repealing Obamacare, which he designed in MA. Looks like he is running to be the MA Governor of the United States.

      • cawmun cents

You back healthcare for everyone in case they are hurt(with state of the art medical equipment available on the open market),but you dont want to let folks defend themselves from the criminal element that might seek to harm them(with the state of the art weaponry available on the open market)….how deep is your head implanted in the Jackass of the democratic party?

    Semper Fi!

  • JimH

I already have my 30 round mags., talk about closing the barn door after the horse got out.

  • r.p.

The second amendment is my right to carry permit. It is also my concealed carry permit, and my class III license for assault weapons and large magazines. To quote Dr. Ron Paul:–”The president is not supposed to keep you safe! The second amendment is supposed to keep you safe!”– We don’t need 20,000 gun laws telling us how to excersize our second amendment right to protect and defend ourselves. It’s not about hunting squirrels and never was.

  • 45caliber

It doesn’t take anyone special or with high intelligence to know that sooner or later they will institute a ban on “assault rifles” … whether they are an assault rifle or not. They intend to ban ALL guns sooner or later. This is simply another attempt to do chip a little more away. So, yes, it WILL be done sooner or later. If not this year, then next. If not this decade, then next. It isn’t a question of “Will they do it?” but a question of “WHEN will they do it?”

Incidentally, you should check out the government definition of “assault weapon”. It is: “any weapon that has ever been used in combat anywhere in the world at any time of the past.” That even covers rocks.

    • JimH

Hi 45, I’ve got my assault bow and arrows hidden in the basement. Don’t tell Homeland Security.
I’ll take my assault canoe across the river, with my assault bow, for an amphibious invasion.

      • JimH

My assault quiver holds more than 10 assault arrows.
        I’m a fairly dangerous man.

    • Vicki

      45caliber writes:
“Incidentally, you should check out the government definition of “assault weapon”. It is: “any weapon that has ever been used in combat anywhere in the world at any time of the past.” That even covers rocks.”

What is also interesting is that definition of assault weapon is the one the founders meant when they wrote the 2nd Amendment. Therefore our right to keep and bear knives and swords as well as assault rifles “…shall NOT be infringed…”
      .
      .

“Congress have no power to disarm the militia. Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birth-right of an American … the unlimited power of the sword is not in the hands of either the federal or state governments, but, where I trust in God it will ever remain, in the hands of the people.

Can an outsider make a comment?
Btitish gun control should serve as an example to you all. The only pistols I can legally own are black powder or airguns!
Yet gun crime here increases almost daily…
    On Obama:-
if, as is likely, he’s not truly qualified under your rules to be President (place of birth, parentage, fraudulent declarations, etc.), would that not make any laws or Executive Orders he’s signed null and void?

More people die from high school football injuries every year than guns. So should we ban football too??? More people choke to death than are shot by guns. Including all accidents resulting in death by bullet. Heart desiese, cancer, diabetes, and drug overdoses kill more people every year than guns. drugs are already heavily regulated, expensive, illegal, and yet people still buy em, use them, abuse them, and die from them. People make them and end up killing others including kids. But you F-ing libbs just want to buy them houses, and get these scumbags “help”

When has a ban on anything worked ? We are talking about a personal Freedom here. A ban only affects the people that cause no harm. Can we understand that the anti’s are raving lunatics. They can not control the criminals, but hell, they can control us, right ? Wrong ! Tell’m to take a flying leap somewhere else, not here in our America. Which boils down to this : Educate the voters, if you can. Oh, and by the way, when is the Revolution.

There is only ONE way that the ‘other side’ can claim to have an ounce of integrity concerning this issue. That is, EVERY utopian/retard/la la land twit must be forced to have a sign on his/her front door (and on the roof) that says “the owner of this house (apartment, etc.) REFUSES to own a weapon.”
The resident of this house/apartment REFUSES to defend himself/herself and does not need the assistance of anyone in law enforcement for ANY reason. Finally, on the same sign should be the words “You can invade this dwelling any time you get the urge. I will not resist. Let’s TALK about it.”
THAT will end this half-baked, non-issue forever. OK, utopian airheads, show America whatcha GOT!
