White House: Obama To Announce Afghanistan War Strategy

December 1, 2009 by

Obama to announce Afghanistan war strategy 'soon,' White House saysPresident Obama met with his national security team last week, and his office said he will announce today whether he will send more troops to Afghanistan.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said the president received all the information from his advisors he needs to make a decision soon, according to TheHill.com.

Meanwhile, Obama has set the stage for the announcement by saying that "once the American people hear a clear rationale for what we’re doing there and how we intend to achieve our goals, they will be supportive."

He was also quoted as saying that he intended to "finish the job."

Earlier this year, the U.S. commander in Afghanistan General Stanley McChrystal requested between 30,000 and 40,000 more troops to be sent to stabilize the volatile country in which militant violence has been escalating.

According to a new CNN/Opinion Research Corp poll, Americans are almost equally split on the issue of sending more soldiers, with half of them supporting the idea and 49 percent opposing it.

However, only 45 percent of the survey’s respondents back the continuing engagement in Afghanistan.
