What I Said About Capitalism In My Speech At Harvard

In a recent speech to college students, President Barack Obama described capitalism as “a broken-down theory,” blaming it for the current economic problems. Wayne Allyn Root says we need to deliver the exact opposite message to students and explain that only capitalism creates true hope and opportunity. Root did so himself recently, speaking to Harvard University students. Root reports that capitalism and entrepreneurism are alive and well — even at Harvard University, the bastion of intellectualism and liberalism.

    Awesome, Wayne! So glad to hear that the kids want to hear something real and inspiring and personal that somebody can get his head and heart into…WITHOUT HURTING, DEFRAUDING OR DAMAGING OTHERS. Business is one area of culture where people should be taught that the principles of Scripture are ready made to be applied and benefited from. God is the greatest businessman in the Universe. All the best business principles and practices are available to be seen there.

      i figured that since everyone is so earnest in knowing what President Obama did, in fact, state about “broken down theories’ in his recent speech to students at Florida Atlantic University, I’d help y’all out.

      HERE is what was referred to as “broken down” … note the word “capitalism” was NEVER spoken…and Mr. Root had to nose deep to twist calling trickle down as ‘capitalism’ and inferring that such is “capitalism’ and nothign else would be.

      Pres. Obama was referring to the FAILED policies of the trickle down that would give all to the wealthy and pretend the yellow fluids spewed upon us was not urine. And how the Right and the GOP are wanting to continue those same, failed policies. …

      Truth, thy took a vacation with mr. root’s article today ….

      “Now keep in mind, I start from the belief that government cannot and should not try to solve every single problem that we’ve got. Government is not the answer to everything.

      What drags our entire economy down is when the benefits of economic growth and productivity go only to the few, which is what’s been happening for over a decade now, and gap between those at the very, very top and everybody else keeps growing wider and wider and wider and wider.

      In this country, prosperity has never trickled down from the wealthy few. Prosperity has always come from the bottom up, from a strong and growing middle class.

      A lot of the folks who were peddling these same trickle-down theories — including members of Congress and some people who are running for a certain office right now, who shall not be named — (laughter and applause) — they’re doubling down on these old broken-down theories. Instead of moderating their views even slightly, instead of saying, you know what, what we did really didn’t work and we almost had a second Great Depression, and maybe we should try something different, they have doubled down.
      They proposed a budget that showers the wealthiest Americans with even more tax cuts, and then pays for these tax cuts by gutting investments in education and medical research and clean energy, in health care.”

        In 1900 Government consumed 3% of our GDP.
        Currently Government consumes over 40% of our GDP.
        And Obama says Less Government doesn’t work? How would he know that?
        He campaigned on change. Why? Is something broken? If so, since Government has grown to 9 times the size of 1900, how can it be a result of Less
        What we’ve “tried” is an ever-increasing size of Government. Yet Liars will blame our economic problems on Not Enough Government. The reality is that Bankers and other Crony Capitalists are working hand in hand with Power Hungry Politicians (of which Obama is one) to feather their nests at the rest of our expense. It doesn’t matter to them if they sell us Military Statism, or Welfare Statism, or Communism — as long as it grows their Power.

        It’s also a logical failure. Why would any thinking person think that somebody spending somebody else’s money is going to spend that money as wisely as the owner of the money would spend his own? And how is hiring a cadre of interfering middle-men (Government bureaucrats), who can only be negatively productive, going to be more productive than letting people freely transact with each other to make voluntary purchases and voluntary contracts?
        The reality, Folks, that Administration Shills like Flashman don’t want you to know, is that Crony Capitalists write most of the regulations to restrict their competitors, or to otherwise feather their own nests. Even those regulations, that aren’t directly anti-competitive, aid the Crony Capitalist Big Businesses because they can afford the cadres of Lawyers and Accountants to jump through the Government hoops, but their smaller competitors can’t. The campaign contributions given by the Crony Capitalists are returned many times over by the Protection given to them from Competition by their Crony Politicians.

        I’m not sure when you refer to ‘socialism” if you refer to Socialist/Capitalism…or pure socialism though.

        I’ll assume to you socialism includes socialist/capitalist. Sweden and Scandanavia come to mind. Northern Europe also.

        Communism…here’s some qualifications on this list. I will refer to the beginning formative years immediate post-revolution. the transition stopped and more authoritarian measures implemented where the government leadership assumed dictatorship rather than representing a popular vote.

        i would list at the top Cuba. Batista was a corrupt hedonistic blood sucking parasite and had to go. Immediately after his ouster, the Cuban economy improved as did the state of living for the masses. for the population as a whole, there can be not argument that the late 50′s to early 60′s saw a vast improvement in the standard of living of the Cuban people.

        It went awry though as Castro cemented his rule and went the way of the Soviet bloc.

        interestingly, had Eisenhower not rejected Castro’s feelers in the lte 50′s…and not pushed Castro to the Soviets when Castro was pleading for American aid and assistance…things may well have been quite different in Cuba. We were still in the final throes of McCarthyism then…and any hint or taint was enough to paint red anything but right wing dictatorships.

        So Eisenhower rejected any overtures or pleadings from Castro and shoved him to the Soviets. Consequently, the need for strict austerity in light of the American embargo and the insistence of the Soviets to adopt their ways…add in Castro’s megalomania that he was the true leader of the Revolution…and you have a stagnant, yet somewhat popular in comparison to what Batista was, government run economy.

        One should often wonder how Cuba would have turned out had Eisenhower accepted the overtures by Castro in the late 50′s ..

        Nice equivocation, Flashman. Warren Harding WAS president from 1921 to 1923. The 1920 economic calamity ended in 1921.
        Unemployment was 11.7 percent in 1921, 6.7 percent in 1922, and 2.4 percent in 1923.
        Let’s see, what is the unemployment rate today — 3 years after Obama took office?

        When are you going to become a decent human being, Flashman, and quit trying to mislead people?

And you stop in the first few years…not choosing to continue to draw the parallel with the policies of Harding and Coolidge which widened the gap between rich and poor and allowed rampant abuse of the markets which led….to the Depression. (the real one).

        And are you stating that the post war boom where America came into its industrial might technologically is a product of harding/ i’d pioint out to you that during the 20′s…unions came into their own and had a strong impact . I take it you would agree then that the growth of unions in the 20′s also aided in that growth.

        Definition of ‘Crony Capitalism’:
        A description of capitalist society as being based on the close relationships between businessmen and the state. Instead of success being determined by a free market and the rule of law, the success of a business is dependent on the favoritism that is shown to it by the ruling government in the form of tax breaks, government grants and other incentives.

        Definition of ‘Capitalism’:
        An economic system based on a free market, open competition, profit motive and private ownership of the means of production. Capitalism encourages private investment and business, compared to a government-controlled economy. Investors in these private companies (i.e. shareholders) also own the firms and are known as capitalists.

        Definition of ‘Free Market’:
        A market economy based on supply and demand with little or no government control. A completely free market is an idealized form of a market economy where buyers and sellers are allowed to transact freely (i.e. buy/sell/trade) based on a mutual agreement on price without state intervention in the form of taxes, subsidies or regulation.

I am far far far from the 1% however, I know the rich pay the vast majority of the taxes in this country even if the “rate” is lower than someone making 30k per year. I’m don’t profess to be an economic scholar but the last that I heard is that the “rich” pay over 50% of the total taxes in this country. The “rich” according to your majesty Obummer is anyone making over 250k per year. Ok, even given that ignorant assessment how many jobs were created by the people below that 250k level? Some I’m sure, but very few. People making less than that do not own the majority of businesses in this country.. There are the little mom and pops that may hire a worker in their business paying them around minimum wage, but they are not hiring people and giving multiple jobs earning 30,40,50 thousand a year. If you believe the government is going to provide all the good paying jobs, then where are the taxes coming from to pay those wages? If all the very wealthy were to put their money and their earnings in some other country and move from here, what would become of this country? I venture to say that we would then be the “third world” country with no ability to provide for the rest of us.

        Great job Flashy! Now a note to DaveH. What kind of Highway system did we have to support in 1900? Did we have a contiuation of COSTLY Wars going on? Did we have NASA? Did we NEED oversight because of the Industrial revolution spewing massive amounts of poison and toxins into the air and water? Just a few examples of how things CHANGE! China had to start putting a b unch of money into roads the last decade because as Capitalism grew and incomes grew the Chinese started buying a lot of cars. They even had to import driving instructors because of all these new drivers running rampant on roads shared by walkers, carts, bicycles. If you want to make FAIR comparisons try Reagan era policies which TRIPLED out debt over a 12 year period with irresponsible military spending and tax cuts mostly benefitting the wealthy. Then look at the Clinton era reduced military spending and tax increases mostly on the wealthy and not only did our debt NOT rise for 6 years but we created a surplus when he left. Then GW gets us into 2 wars and cuts taxes mostly for the wealthy (TEMPORARY cuts which when they expire will increase revenues $5 Trillion over the next decade. Obama is still working under BUSH rules because of a Rethuglican menatality of just say NO!)

      Any time I see one of your NY Post or National Enquirer-style headlines about something Obama is supposed to have said, I know the truth is at least 179 degrees different. His message has not changed. Capitalism is the engine of economic growth, but an engine without steering, brakes, and an intelligent driver (read: sensible regulation) leads to utter disaster (read: GWB and the Crash of 2008). Unfettered capitalism with no regulation of the banks, polluters, etc. will make a few people (read: Mitt Romney) very rich, but will impoverish society as a whole. We’ve always had debates about which regulations make sense; the difference now is you guys on the right act like all regulations are bad. So, we need to get rid of the EPA, allow banks to destroy the economy, coal companies to strip mine and kill their workers – all in the name of your religion of unregulated capitalism.

      There’s a reason FDR was considered the savior of capitalism. Without intelligent oversight, the system will implode, as it essentially did in 2008. Now, you want to let the banks do whatever they please. Why not return to the regulatory climate established in the 30s that prevented a major collapse until it was undone beginning in the 80s?

    There is a war underway in America between Marxist/Fascist like Obummer and the remaining threads of capitalism. Obummer continues to use the liberal playbook started in the 60′s where by they intend to re-educate the masses. This is why he goes to the universities who are in most cases managed by liberal administrators.

    The capitalists must counter their message by going before the same young adults with the message of personal responsibility, hard work and success, compassion for those in need through self help and support by the community.

    If this is not done, the minds of the most easily to sway will be swayed. Let us hope not in the direction the current occupant of the White House wants.

        It is all a product of the “everyone wins, there are no losers here” philosophy that is everywhere in our country today. In the recreation league sports, everyone gets a trophy, it’s about playing together, not winning or losing. With that mentality there is no motivation to work hard, to succeed, because no matter how hard you strive, everyone else will receive the same “reward” as you. This carries on into the union philosophy, no matter how hard you work, you receive the same pay increases and benefits as the person that just barely shows up for work. The next generation has been tamed by the liberals to believe that all that matters is fairness, competition is bad, winning is bad.

        It has always been the American way to work hard, succeed and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Some acheive more, some less, but the feeling of knowing that you have earned what you have cannot be beat. We have now produced an entire generation that has no work ethic and no motivation to achieve.

I have one daughter who is in her 20′s and she has many friends who have served in the military, since 9/11, some of whom are still active duty. The general concensus amongst the majority of those young veterans is that they took their oath to defend the Constitution, not the President nor Congress.

        Flashy, I never said Batista was any better than Castro….what I pointed out is that, economically, her people were better off. As for Castro being “good” for the country, many dictators take power by convincing the people that they would do a better job, thereby enlisting those who would help overthrow the existing government. That doesn’t mean it will happen. Hitler was a perfect example of that and we all know how that ended.

        Obama has done the same thing…made many promises but followed through with very few of those promises. Most likely, he never intended to…it was a means of reaching his goals & nothing more. He has, however, with the help of a Democratic majority in both houses passed bills that the majority of Americans disagree with and he carefully never mentioned his intent to enact those bills, when he was running for office.

Without the loans, the Bankruptcy would have meant nothing but the liquidation of the companies and at least a million jobs.     Something is broken. Trickle down doesn’t work… That’s obvious to everyone except perhaps to some republicans. The middle class has been getting screwed since the end of the Great Compression. And U.S. corporations have been posting record profits every quarter since Oct. 2009.

    Yet, they haven’t ( and don’t plan on ) hiring back even a fraction of the employees they laid off during the recession.

    Any rational person will tell you free markets/capitalism is the best way to run an economy.
    Even the late Karl Marx stated that capitalism is a wonderful thing. The problem that exists in this country is corporate monopolism. It’s the huge corporations that are choking with bleeding are econ. dry. They,also, recieve the hugest amount of welfare of any facet in our society. These corporations get this through subsidies, gov. handouts/bailouts, plus specialized loans where these entities don’t have to begin paying back until 10 yrs down the road and that’s only if they made a sizable profit. The solution is get rid of corporate welfare. Then, let the small business owner thrive. Our econ. would leap forward by a generation or two. Remember big corps go hand in hand with big gov. Thanks!!

        You see sir, the issue here is not about envy. Heck, the corps. or an individual should be able to make a profit, a big one at that. What i’m getting at is that big corps with gov. assistance shouldn’t interfer with others, who want to make a profit or at least thrive. Therefore, as mentioned in my first post, time end subsidies and let competition take place for that leads to better products. The only role of gov. in this scenario is to act like a judge to make sure one entity doesn’t overstep the boundaries of another one. I hope this explaination clears things up. Thanks!!

    Libertarians believe no law should prevent anyone or any group of people from acquiring the assets of someone else who is willing to sell. Nevertheless, antitrust laws are necessary to protect competition; and,as far as libertarianism goes, when there’s a crack in the shell, the whole egg is compromised. Capitalism is a kind of legalized pyramid scheme, in the sense that the more money you make the more your possibility of making more and thus concentrating the money supply. It’s a system that needs to be kept in check by socialistic measures. Relying on individual virtue to keep people from using their freedom to step on their neighbor’s freedom is just utopian and silly. Unbridled capitalism is for those who believe that people exist for money instead of money existing for people!

      I know your right the statement wasn’t made as Root said it was, but that almost doesn’t matter stretching the chain of logic. Trickle-down economocs = laisex-faire economics = free market capitalism. I think in this particular speech by Root, the man presents it like a used car salesman using too much latitude in his opinion and the opinion of Obama, but the conflict is deviding the country, conservatives vs liberals, and anyone somewhere in the middle is getting pushed to one side or the other.
      I think free enterprise is the best thing to ush in our economics, but regulation is also needed due to a large population of people, and the greed, or temptation too many people have with self centered ideas of their own success.

If we are not winning the contests to date, it’s because we are failing to SELL THE BENEFITS. Forget promoting the opposition by bagging Obama as you are giving him lots of free publicity. Many of your contributors feel that by bagging OBAMA with all manner of derogatory names is going to win more us philosophy’s votes…IMO it won’t …you will lose more votes because readers will judge the writers personality as the probable personality of Libertarians as disgusting low life and IMO it is very counterproductive.
