We All Belong To The Government?

The Democratic National Convention kicked off with a video meant to unite all Americans. The production claims that “Government is the only thing we all belong to.”

The Mitt Romney campaign seized the opportunity and tweeted, “We don’t belong to government, government belongs to us.”

Despite the video playing at the DNC, the Barack Obama-Joe Biden campaign quickly pointed out that the video was not produced by the DNC, but rather the host committee.

“The video in question was produced and paid for by the host committee of the city of Charlotte. It’s neither an OFA nor a DNC video, despite what the Romney campaign is claiming,” said the Obama campaign.

Dan Murrey, executive director of the host committee, backed up the DNC’s claim:

The “Welcome to Charlotte” video was solely produced and paid for by the Host Committee’s New American City Fund, which promotes the city of Charlotte and welcomes our guests. The intent of this video was to tell the story of this region and it is completely unaffiliated with the Obama campaign or the Democratic National Committee.

    If the DNC and the Barack Obama-Joe Biden campaign did not approve of the video it never would have played. Having it produced by the host committee just gave the DNC an easy denial so they could appear to be innocent of it.

    I think it was wrong to phrase it in the manner they did. It sounded like they were saying belong to in the same way one would say I belong to this club or I belong to that city. As in we are all involved ore connected through the government. We are all part of a society and government is part of that society.

      Sorry, J, that falls a bit short. Can you honestly say you’ve ever heard anyone say that they belong to a city, state or even the nation?

      Normally, it’s “I’m from New York,” “I live in Seattle” or “I’m an American.”

      It certainly “was wrong to phrase it in the manner they did.”

      Obama never said “You didn’t build that”. He was talking about roads and bridges and flubbed his sentences. He was trying to say you did not build it alone.

        I suppose that may be an acceptable redaction however……

        When you consider that Government has NO money which it first does not steal… er rather “invests”… from producers, coupled with the facts the top 25% of wage earners pay probably 80-90% of the bill AND ~47% pay no income taxes at all (and yes I know even the poor pay all those hidden taxes on virtually everything we buy)…. I’d say no… we actually DID build that!!

      Looks to me like the founding fathers knew full well that the government belongs to US. WE built it. We can and must change it when it becomes destructive to our purpose in creating it.

        I agree. Let’s put folks in the House and Senate who are for the American people, most of whom reside in the middle class. Let’s remove corporation’s status as individuals. Let’s move our country off of the oil habit we have to increase our national security. Let’s allow two consenting adults to unite under the law. AND let’s defeat Mr. Romney.

        Extra bonus points if they understand both freedom and the point of Constitutional limits on what the American people can get government to do. (Tyranny of the majority is a BAD thing)

        Why? Corporations are just a group of people working together. Freedom of association and all that.

        Yep. Remove the concept of marriage from government entirely and put marriage back where it belongs. In the hands of God. (Or the hands of your favorite creator). Civil contracts work fine for business partnerships which is all that the government involvement has with current “marriage” anyway.

    Let me be very – very clear about what I am about to post, what ever is { shown or stated or noted or played } has been 100% Vetted long prior to the first person stepping in the room.

    I do this for a living and have done so form age 15 and still do at over 60, let me repeat what I posted;
    { “nothing of this magnatude is ever done per chance!”}
    As in “NOTHING!”

    We have a show set down to the last note before we even walk on stage – months in advance. Even when we break for a few words between songs its rehearsed 1000 X’s over for its effect so we sell more records / CD’s / more shows.
    Let alone everyone we promote we do the same gig with.
    There is “NO FREE SCRIPTING” allowed for any reason at all ever.

    The cost of just doing the recon on the most effective methods of creating the most intense impact is crazy. This is done so the partron leaves feeling 100% Satasified and will brag about the show to everyone.

    So again { no one ever farts with out being on cue! }

      I agree. Everything at these conventions is planned and scripted down to the last detail. This video as well as the exclusion of God and Jerusalem from the platform were all part of the obama plan. Just like the Seal’s taking out bin Laden, obama always leaves an out, if the reaction is negative he is ready to wash his hands and shift the blame. “The video in question was produced and paid for by the host committee of the city of Charlotte.     If our government is by the people, of the people, and for the people, then I can’t say that I disagree with the statement made in the video. Government is a thing we all belong to. We are the government.

    I think too much has been made of this video. It’s splitting hairs. There was nothing said, in context, that suggested we are the government’s property. It was saying that government is a thing we are all part of, and that’s not an untrue statement if you are politically active.

    If we “belong to government” than it will not be too long before we are shifted back to the dark ages of slavery…before government can provide you with anything, it must take everything away from you….It was with the birth of Christianity which took the people out of bondage and gave mankind his human dignity and freedoms.
    It was the Founding Fathers who drew up the Constitution that preserved them for us.
    Every act of Government against or without the consent of the People is injustice, usurpation, and tyranny.
    Our Constitutional Republic made the United States the freest, most prosperous nation the world has ever seen because of that Constituiton limiting the powers of a central government.

      We are all part of the government. After all “Government of the people”. I think the wording was wrong and the message was misinterpreted as a result. We all are part of the government and are involved in some way. But we certainly do not belong to it as property.

      I am a progressive liberal, though I am a social democrat not a democratic party democrat. At any rate I do not believe government is god. I do not believe people belong to anyone or anything. Its just a matter of treating others as you wish to be treated.
