Vitamin C May Help Slow Cancer Growth, Support Responsiveness To Chemotherapy

August 5, 2010 by

Vitamin C May Help Slow Cancer Growth, Support Responsiveness To ChemotherapyResults of a recent New Zealand study suggest that taking vitamin C supplements may help cancer patients slow the growth of certain invasive tumors.

Lead investigator Margreet Vissers, an associate professor at the University of Otago’s Free Radical Research Group, and her colleagues believe the findings establish a direct link between low levels of vitamin C and the size and aggressiveness of cancerous tumors.

For the study the researchers introduced varying levels of the nutrient to cancer cells and assessed the ability of the corresponding tumors to grow and survive after established cancer therapies had been introduced.

The scientists discovered that tumors with low levels of vitamin C had higher amounts of HIF-1, a protein that encourages cancer growth in stressful conditions. On average high-grade tumors had 40 percent less vitamin C than less advanced cancerous tissue.

Based on these findings Vissers suggested that the nutrient could not only help slow the growth of solid tumors, but also improve the body’s response to chemotherapy.

There’s enough information now for people to be seriously thinking about doing this, to apply this to the clinic or be setting up some clinical trials," Vissers told the New Zealand Herald.

I do know that I have added a ton of fresh fruits to my diet and I strongly feel that its helped with my cancer.

Midnight fruits have higher levels of Vit C as well cabanoids.

Being a health consultant, be sure the vitamin C is COMPLETE and from a high quality source. At 72, my blood checks out perfect. I was born C deficient and for some 40 years have taken between 5,000 to 20,000 grams of C – shows wrinkling too! We have known for years that vitamin C fights many types of diseases, not just cancer alone. Drugs do not truly fight many diseases and in the main cause a whole lot of diseases. Please do NOT eat lots of fruit because of the high sugar content but do add lots of steamed or saucted veggies along with some raw and make sure they are all of many colors. Traditional Chinese Medicine has been a gret adjunct to my consults and until they started eating “our diet”, they were healthy and now they have the same health problems we see here and in other Western countries. Eat smaller quantities, drink safe and clean water, stop the sodas, juices, dairy, grains, and junk foods. We’ll see fewer health concerns and much less obesity. And the twin of daily nutrition is exercise but don’t do so much you sweat like a pig because that weakens the body’s defense systems. I remember studying nutrition and being told it would take the government and other groups 20+ years to catch up with what we were learning in our studies in the 70′s and 80′s, so glad vitamin C has been “found” to be effective. Well, better late than never for some of us anyway.

I googled info about the lypo-spheric Vitamin C, and found the info very interesting. I wish I could find it locally, but so far it looks like you have to order this on line. Most reviews were positive; one or two said they did not feel or see a difference. Thanks for providing the info, as I did not know of this type of vitamin C or why it’s considered more usable in the body (cells).
