Universities Are Embracing Organic And Sustainable Farming Courses

August 17, 2011 by

Universities Are Embracing Organic And Sustainable Farming CoursesToday’s college students are in a position to be at the forefront of the burgeoning agricultural revolution, as more colleges and universities add organic and sustainable farming courses to their curricula.

An article by The Associated Press reported that these new graduates may be entering the job market in a timely fashion, since the average farmer in the U.S. is 57 years old. Moreover, companies appear to be focused on diversifying their agricultural businesses.

“Everybody’s going back to school because you have to. We know that equals earning potential and survivability on and off the farm,” said Curtis Miller, director of education for the American Farm Bureau Foundation, quoted by the news source. “No matter how you raise your food, fiber or fuel, this diversification includes a lot of these educational programs.”

The University of Kentucky recently reported on an event in August in which hundreds of students and educators gathered to talk about how their sustainable farming courses operate and to exchange innovative techniques.

The event, called the Sustainable Agriculture Education Association Conference, was meant to strengthen educational efforts on new farming methods, helping institutions develop strong curricula to prepare the country’s future farmers.

they will buy hoses to pull plows to plant crops. do not mention an ait poluting tractor to them, they will puke. yes, back to the 17th century.

  • Polski

You’ve all missed the main point here. The “evil empire” Monsanto, and the Bill Gates Foundation are partnering to ruin the whole planet’s food crop with GMOs, Genetic Molested Organisms. Once this has been completed, and it’s almost complete in the United States, where the politicians and government are the most corrupt in the world, then the evil empire/Bill Gates Foundation will attack the rest of the world, which is fighting Genetic Molested Organisms. It doesn’t matter whether we’re talking Democrat or Republican, both are equally corrupt.

Polski – We are all fighting it, but the plan is depopulation, and we are not being heard.

I have read where some places is Austrailia and (Turkey or Hungary) are plowing under GMO crop fields. Hoorah for them!

That’s exactly what we need to do.

I always purchase guaranteed organic/heirloom seeds, but have noticed diminishing production in some, leaving me to wonder if they’ve been contaminated by GMOs. I do save my own seed from year to year.

Of course, that is the plan, also. Soon, all crops will be tainted by the GMO.

That is the biggest glaring falicy about this article. What good is knowing how to grow organically and self sustaining if the GOVERNMENT WON’T ALLOW IT??? Monsanto and others will make sure of that!!!

This is just a repackaging of the nonesense described by the anti constitutional UN Agenda 21. This basic drive is to use the beliefs, not the real science, of these Sustainable Development proponents to “nudge” us along the path of giving up freedoms. Here is an outcry from a citizen about such nonesense:

I am outraged that there are still people out there so foolish as to deny the existence of Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW).
“After all, among those who just know AGW to be true are some of the most important thinkers of our age: Leonardo DiCaprio, Paris Hilton, Ed Begley Jr., Al Gore, and Arnie Schwarzenegger. And who do the Climate Change deniers have in their camp, pray tell? Why, only complete nobodies like Professor Richard Lindzen, atmospheric physicist at MIT; professor and atmospheric physicist Fred Singer of the University of Virginia; Dr. Roy Spencer, a climatologist who used to work for NASA; Dr. Willie Soon, an astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics…”
Don’t get me wrong, you are still free, for the time being, to believe in anything you want. But the jump from belief to scientific facts and proof is a bit more than having politicians provide researchers with millions of dollars to conclude with the politically correct answer they paid for with your hard earned tax dollars. How much money would it take to have you manipulate data and facts to support your benefactor’s agenda?(Sustainable Development ie: UN Agenda 21, read it) Real scientific proofs stand up to the scrutiny of all and remains valid for the parameters given. Take for example the famous E=MC2 developed by Albert Einstein. Even after being pressured to release his new theory, he refused until he completed the last experiment that provided conclusive proof as to this new law. In contrast, just over the past many years, scientists at a University in Colorado published results that proved cold fusion, which certainly excited the true scientific community. But after testing and retesting the results and theory, the proof was proven to be false and poorly done at that.
Even if a valid data base could be constructed that statistically proved the earth’s environment was not naturally cyclic or driven by the sun’s activity, the leap to conclude it is caused by man is nothing short of outrageous. Again, science has to have experimental proofs that can hold up under scrutiny, and not wild unknowable conjecture. The idea that peoples lively hoods, industry, and economic expansion have been severely impacted by such pseudo scientific drivel should outrage Americans. The fact that we have been so easily led by the nose to believe in this environmental, as well as other pantheistic nonsense is a testament to our failing educational system specifically in the sciences and math by federally/locally dictated curriculums. Yes, these are the same people that paid for the global warming fairytales, the carbon footprint schemes and others to lead you to a utopia of a “Wizard of OZ” like fantasy. The truly tough investigative journalism of our main street media has readily accepted and spread this misinformation as directed by their handlers to the extent of attempting to discredit legitimate opposition or discussion.
Don’t ever underestimate the power of beliefs. There are people in this polarized country today that are so fanatical about the belief in climate change, because they have been told it is true science, that they will do almost “anything” to discredit an opposing view. Remember, one lie will foster more and more lies which creates more fanatics and their self-righteous environmental organizations. (Remember the absurd lies in Germany and the super race nonsense, hard to understand how anyone would believe that brand of “truth”, but they did) Giving up your individual reasoning and freedoms to “environmental and social justice” or “collective salvation” is a recipe for stupendous failure as a country and culture, as man’s history has always proven.

    Science News:
Beetles Play an Important Role in Reducing Weeds:
ScienceDaily (July 26, 2011) — Researchers funded by the UK Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and the French Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA) have found that ground beetles reduce the amount of weed seeds in the soil. Weeds reduce crop yields and these findings support the need to conserve farmland biodiversity as it plays an important supporting role to herbicides in controlling weeds and improving food security.

This research confirms a long-held belief by scientists that ground beetles play a role in weed control. Dr David Bohan, Rothamsted Research, who led the research, said “seed predation by naturally occurring beetles in farmland does have a beneficial effect, reducing weed numbers in fields and potentially improving agricultural productivity.”

The study, to be published in the August edition of Journal of Applied Ecology, used data from 257 conventionally managed fields throughout the UK to determine the effect that ground beetles have on the number of weed seeds in the soil of sugar beet, maize, and spring and winter oilseed rape fields.

The researchers found that grass weeds were reduced more than other weeds, which is important because many UK farms have severe grass weed problems. Some of these species are increasingly resistant to herbicides and have a major impact on productivity as they compete with the crop for resources, leading to lower yields. Policy-driven reduction in herbicide use could lead to higher numbers of weeds in fields, so alternatives to herbicides have the potential for significant impact.

Ground beetles appear to eat a significant proportion of the weed seeds that would otherwise go into the soil. With the right management, ground beetles could be used to replace some herbicide applications and significantly reduce weed populations. ‘Beetle banks’, which involve leaving an area of a field as a wildlife habitat, are already supported under the Environmental Stewardship schemes available to farmers.

Professor Douglas Kell, Chief Executive, BBSRC said “We have a challenge to feed 9 billion people by 2050 and to do so we must engage in research now that will underpin improvements in yield and sustainability of farming in the future. By studying whole biological systems such as farm ecosystems we can spot the various contributions made by different aspects of a system, including these beetles. This project shows that the balance of farm ecosystems can be vital to ensuring sustainability in farming in the future. It also makes the link between biodiversity and food security very clear.”

Why did it take universities so long to get on the sustainable bandwagon? They should have acted on it at least two decades ago. My advice is to keep government types out of their classrooms.
That might represent a problem at some schools, especially if they’re addicted to “Uncle Scam’s money.”
If schools can make it work (and keep Uncle Scam entertained elsewhere), I’d say go for it and make it work. Otherwise, Uncle Scam’s huge nose and size 99, quadruple Z shoes are already at the doors of every classroom and there’s nothing to ‘embrace’ by taking those courses.

I’ve been surfing online more than three hours today, yet I never found any interesting article like yours. It’s pretty worth enough for me. In my opinion, if all web owners and bloggers made good content as you did, the internet will be a lot more useful than ever before.
