Union Membership Dwindling

Labor losses are mounting. I mentioned in Wisconsin Vote Stuns The Left how membership in the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees plummeted in Wisconsin once the State stopped taking union dues from their paychecks. But it turns out that union support is declining in other States as well. The Wall Street Journal reported: “In the 12 months ended in February, Ohio’s membership fell 8.5%, Pennsylvania’s dropped 3.4% and Michigan’s declined 11.7%.” Look for union clout to continue to decline as more and more States challenge their power and more and more members decline to pay their dues.

Another promise Obama didn’t keep. Union supporters in Wisconsin are still smarting over the lack of support they received from President Barack Obama. Many of them remember this promise the candidate made in 2007: “If American workers are being denied their right to organize and collectively bargain when I’m in the White House, I’ll put on a comfortable pair of shoes myself, I’ll walk on that picket line with you as president of the United States of America.” But when push came to shove, apparently raising funds in Hollywood was more important than marching with workers in Wisconsin.

The stock market could soar. I just got an interesting email from market analyst Gary Halbert about the anticipated Supreme Court ruling on Obamacare. He says that “If the High Court renders ObamaCare unconstitutional later this month, and I think it will, we could see a MONSTER RALLY [his emphasis] in stocks.” He anticipates that the court will render a decision by June 25, before it adjourns for the summer. Let’s hope he’s right.

Now that’s an expensive lunch. Every year, Warren Buffett agrees to let the Glide Foundation, a charity that helps the homeless in San Francisco, auction off a lunch with him. The winning bid earlier this month hit a staggering $3.5 million. For that kind of money, I hope the bidder (who thus far has chosen to remain anonymous) gets the best investment advice of his life.

    What may be pushing the change is that (because of TARP and auto bail outs) many union bosses became management. As such they became the enemy to many members. I think the trend will continue until union membership settles at about half thee current number.

    All in my family at one time or another belonged to a union. My Father, for many years, was a union steward. To a person, if asked what the union did for them, their response would be “relatively little” My Father, in his later years was most outspoken against the union. He had seen the unions in thier heydays (30′s and 40′s) when they did some good (although one can argue the overall benefit) through their ultimate deterioration via corruption and mob influence.
    For me, they never made sense. I had to join one very early in my career to obtain the job, but the only ones who seemed to benefit to any extent were the union management. I saw no great benefit in working hard when that exertion would not be met with any benefit. The guy next to me who only did what was required to get by, by virtue of his being hired earlier than I, was paid the same, if not a bit more, and if cutbacks came, would remain while I would be out the door. From that point on, I relied on jobs where my performance dictated my pay, and now in my later years, it has given me the confidence to step out on my own and be master of my own fate.
    One of my former jobs was doing time studies on line downtimes. The company was in negotiations with the union for a new contract. It was at the beginning of the 80′s recession. One of the line workers confided in me, “Most of us are satisfied with what we have. The ones who are yelling the loudest for a strike will drive out that gate in a Cadillac, and will drive back in with anything that will run”. Unfortunately there were all too many of those type in the country, living well beyond their means, leveraged to the hilt. Those are the ones who love unions, as well as socialist/facist leaning politicians.

      i agreed 100% of what you said, they dont care about anybody, I was a union menber of the 32 BJ , I got fired for being in the hospital sick and the delegate sided withe the lanlord even though he was supposse to protec me or to give mer the chance to proof my case, they didn’t care that I was a disabled person,from that point on lost my faith on the Union ( bunch of corrupts )

    if unions go away we will see a decline in wages and benefits by greedy companies. they will profit really big by robbing the american worker. hostess brands is in the process of trying to do away with the retirement pension. people work their whole life there and deserve it. i work in one of their plants we are run very hard. there are always threats or diciplinary write ups. you get 4 chances and are gone. i had 3 against me. two happened just after i bid to a different job and it would have helped if i had learned a bit more. i was busting my but to get everything done and i made mistakes. I always try hard to do a good job. punishment is all there is. not much communication what would help. as rough as this job is id almost think everyone deserved the pension. the place will always be union because of it. there is no such thing as loyalty which would make the place even more productive. a lot of you people who are pulling out of unions are bound to see this happening whree you work. it will revert back to the days before the unions were founded. profit and greed will rule. the american dream will be dead. its headed there fast. we will become like the workers in china. it doesn’t look good

      And as long as you rely on others to protect you, you will always be in the position you are in. I was like you once. Did not like the feeling so I trained myself such that if the company folds, I will still be able to make a living and survive. And I am now in the position to own a company. The biggest obstacle in everyone’s way is fear of taking the risk. I have had to step off into the unknown several times, and it is never a good feeling. However once you get past the first incident, your confidence grows and makes the next time easier. Relying on a union, or a government, or anything else will not defeat the fear that controls you. It is only you and you alone facing that fear which will improve your lot. This applies not just to work but to all things in life.

      THE VAST MAJORITY OF AMERICAN WORKERS (93.1% private and 63% public sector) seem to have a different take on things. They don’t belong to unions.

      But don’t worry your little pinhead. If things get as bad as you describe, I have a feeling they’ll join again. Don’t hold your breath waiting.

    I lived in a “RIGHT TO WORK” state, (Arizona), but worked for a company that had roots in a union state. Even though I was capable of doing my job on my own, I was required by the union to call a rigger, just to carry my multi-meter, and tool box, down the hall 20 ft. This usually meant about a hr. wait while the person with a dolly could arrange to do the job for me. A 10 min. job cost me 1.5 hrs. This is the efficiency of the union. When it came to a 3 hr. wait, I just put my tools in my pocket, and went down the hall to do the job. This resulted in a grievance filed against me by the shop steward, and it cost me a half hr. pay. The excuse from the management was, we don’t want the business shut down just because you want to be efficient.

    Some fun huh? Junk the unions. They have no real place in this country.

    Unions were a blessing to this country many years ago. When they lost their focus and found power, they were bound to implode. Power, which is really an illusion and which is only granted for a period of time, corrupts those who think it will be theirs forever. The unions will return when they have learned this lesson and when the workers need further protection. Not all companies are greedy and not all union members illusionists. There is a balance but for right now that pendulum is out of whack. Politicians have the same problem. Take for example the border. People have said that they will vote for anyone and everyone who takes a stance at no amnesty, border protection and sending those folks home regardless of party. The majority of Americans feel this way. Why is there such a stance about letting illegals vote? I would never vote for a President who disregards the American laws on the books. Change the law if you want it another way but DO NOT break it. How can any American vote for such a person?????

    Most union members have never been to the union hall, let alone a union meeting. When you’re completely un-involved, what do you expect? Is there corruption? Sure. Name any institution that is corruption free. Once the companies have convinced all of you that unions are useless, wait and see how they treat you. Anyone who thinks big business cares about the labor force is living on Fantasy Island. Keep yout eyes on Wisconsin. Watch what happens in states like Ohio, Michigan, and Pennsyvania. I hear a lot of whining about union corruption, but very little about the corruption of large corporations. Once the unions have disappeared, you’ll see how much labor is valued. Do you really think big business pays competitive wages, overtime, and health benefits out of the kindness of their hearts? Look at the way business treats foreign workers in countries they’ve re-located to. Why? Because they CAN. And of course, they turn that savings over to thre American public.. oh wait- They DON’T! The same people who never attend union meetings, never become involved with their own unions, never run for union office, never read their own contracts, and who now cry the loudest about how evil the unions are, will be some of the first people tossed out on the streets– but that’s okay… sacrifices need to be made. When those that are left are working in sweatshops, at slave wages, for companies that exist to only make profits for the priviledged few, buck up and shut up: This is what’s GOOD for America. It will be your children in the streets fighting for everything their great-great- grandfathers fought and died for. Assuming, of course, that union organizing hasn’t been outlawed under future provisions of The Patriot Act. And most of this because current workers, who are too lazy to attend union meetings once a month, have been brainwashed into believing that what’s GOOD for BUSINESS, is good for America. Good luck, chumps. History is gearing up to repeat itself at your expense!

      Hmmmm… every business without a union is a “sweatshop” paying “slave wages”? Wow, you would think we would have heard of this! What are the names of these terrible companies? Tell us so none of us accidentally ends up applying there.

    I once had a job which required one to belong to a union. After 2 years of feeding money to that corrupt organization I called the workers together and showed them the truth. We then voted to leave the union.
