U.S. Lawmakers Visiting Israel

JERUSALEM, Aug. 8 (UPI) — The American Israel Education Foundation organized visits to Israel by 26 Democrats and 55 Republicans from the U.S. Congress, officials said.

The Democratic contingent was to arrive Monday, the Republicans in the weeks ahead, The Jerusalem Post said.

The Democrats are led by House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Md., and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., will lead one of two Republican groups, the newspaper said.

The American lawmakers will also visit the West Bank.

They are to meet with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres in Jerusalem and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah.

A group of 18 Washington-based ambassadors from Asia, Europe, Africa and Latin American countries arrived in Israel Monday for a visit organized by The Israel Project.

The group includes ambassadors from Albania, Barbados, Belize, Burkina Faso, Haiti and Uganda.

Some members of the group are from countries Jerusalem believes are likely to vote against or abstain in the Palestinian statehood vote in the United Nations in September, the newspaper said.
