U.S. Army Orders Expandable Shelters

CHARLOTTE, N.C., (UPI) — More than two dozen expandable mobile shelters are to be produced for the U.S. Army by General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products.

The shelters, worth $6.1 million, are used as command centers, kitchens, maintenance shops and medical facilities.

The task order for the Army Standard Family shelters was given by U.S. Army Contracting Command under a 2010 contract.

The mobile shelters are made of aluminum-faced, nonmetallic honeycomb-sandwich panels and can include features for power and signal distribution, environmental control units and lighting.

The company said the shelters ordered will be delivered to the Army next year and bring the value of the original contract to $26 million.

“The ASF shelters are well-suited for high-rate production and specialized custom fabrication,” said Jim Losse, vice president and general manager of advanced materials for General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products.

“General Dynamics has been producing these shelters for more than 40 years. This contract is an opportunity for us to continue delivering the high-quality product our customer has come to expect of General Dynamics.”

The shelters will be manufactured in Marion, Va.
