U.K. Soldier Faces Atrocity Allegation

EDINBURGH, Scotland, Aug. 8 (UPI) — Britain’s Defense Ministry says it is investigating reports that a soldier cut fingers off dead Taliban fighters in Afghanistan to keep as souvenirs.

The allegations have been made against a member of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders battalion deployed in Helmand province from September 2010 to April this year, Scotsman.com reported Monday.

Soldiers in the battalion are recruited in Scotland but based in Britain at Canterbury in Kent.

The ministry’s Special Investigation Branch is looking into the allegation, the BBC reported.

A ministry spokesman would not say if the soldier in question had been suspended during the investigation.

“This is a very serious allegation and it would be wrong for us to comment,” the spokesman said. “An investigation is ongoing.”
