Tymoshenko Says She Can’t See Doctor

KIEV, Ukraine, Aug. 19 (UPI) — Jailed former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has been barred from seeing her personal doctor, spokeswoman Marina Soroka said.

Soroka said Tymoshenko, detained in Kiev while awaiting trial for exceeding her authority in signing natural gas deals with Russia in 2009, has bruises and blotches on her body, RIA Novosti reported Friday.

Tymoshenko, an opposition leader, asked for permission to see her doctor Thursday, but the court in Kiev said no, Soroka said, adding Tymoshenko had been offered medical attention previously but refused. Her doctor said she needs blood tests.

“She has a very bad condition and bruises on her body,” Soroka said.

Tymoshenko, 50, arrested Aug. 5, is accused of hurting Ukraine’s national interests by signing unfair gas contracts with Russia when she was prime minister in 2009. If convicted, she faces a possible decade in prison.

Tymoshenko has denied the charges, saying they are politically motivated.
