Two New Star Clusters Seen In Milky Way

MUNICH, Germany, Oct. 21 (UPI) — European astronomers say they’ve discovered two new globular star clusters near the center of the Milky Way galaxy.

The discovery of a new globular cluster in the Milky Way is rare. The last one was discovered in 2010, and only 158 globular clusters were known in the galaxy before the new discoveries, a release from the Munich headquarters of the European Southern Observatory said Wednesday.

The new clusters were found by the VISTA survey, which is systematically studying the central parts of the Milky Way in infrared light, the ESO release said.

Because of the absorption and reddening of starlight by interstellar dust, these objects can only be seen in infrared light.

One of the observed clusters may be the closest known to the center of the Milky Way, astronomers said.
