Twins Switched For $50K Hockey Shot

FARIBULT, Minn., Aug. 16 (UPI) — Organizers of a Minnesota charity hockey event have not said whether a $50,000 prize will be awarded to a boy who made a shot while posing as his twin.

Pat Smith said his 11-year-old son, Nick, had gone outside when the raffle tickets were drawn, so his twin brother, Nate, took his place on the ice at the Thursday event in Faribult, ABCNews.com reported Tuesday.

Nate Smith hit the 3-inch puck into a 3 1/2-inch slot in the goal from center ice.

“After he made the shot, we had to sign some documents and stuff, and I thought oh boy, we don’t want to mess that up,” Pat Smith said. “I didn’t have time to really think it through and I said yeah, it was Nick’s shot.”

“The next day we felt so badly, I called into the organizers, we told them that Nate made the shot. We did the right thing,” Smith said.

Odds on Promotions, the insurance carrier for the event, has not indicated whether the $50,000 prize will be paid for the shot. ABC News said the company did not return calls for comment.

“I just felt I had to do the right thing,” Pat Smith said. “I just think that honesty is more important than any prize or money you could get.”
