Turks Strike Kurds In Iraq In Retaliation

ISTANBUL, Turkey, Aug. 17 (UPI) — Turkish warplanes bombed suspected Kurdish positions in Iraq Wednesday in retaliation for a Kurdish ambush on a military convoy in Turkey, officials said.

The Turkish newspaper Zaman reported that after the clash at Diyarbakir in southeastern Turkey, 14 Turkish F-16 fighter jets targeted members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, a designated terrorist organization by the United States and other nations, in northern Iraq.

The New York Times said the Anatolia News Agency of Turkey reported Kurdish militants detonated four bombs on the Hakkari-Cukurca highway as a Turkish convoy rolled by. The attack killed seven soldiers and one guard. At least 14 others were wounded, the U.S. newspaper said.

Turkey has been bogged down in long-running hostilities with Kurdish militants who seek autonomy for Turkey’s nearly 12 million Kurds.
