TSA: Children May Keep Shoes On, Sometimes

TSA: Children May Keep Shoes On, Sometimes

Children 12 years old and younger may soon get to keep their shoes on at airport security checkpoints and will be patted down by Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials using “less invasive methods.”

The information comes from testimony to Congress from Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, who said the new practices will roll out in coming months. Napolitano said the changes may not, however, be all-encompassing to ensure “unpredictability” in security screening.

Reports that the TSA does not use common sense when it screens air travelers abound. Young children and the elderly will still be subjected to random blanket searches, according to Napolitano’s rule of exception. Last year, the government began using a more invasive pat-down than what had been used in the past, involving screeners’ feeling travelers’ genital and breast areas. The newly “modified” child pat-down will now involve several trips through the metal detector and imaging machines, to get a “clear picture” to ensure the child is not carrying explosives.

These steps, which are aimed at quelling dissent against invasive TSA procedures, come within a week of the agency’s announcement that it will spend $44.8 million to expand its digital strip-search technologies to more airports in the United States.

“Currently, there are nearly 500 AIT [Advanced Imaging Technology] units at 78 airports nationwide. Today’s purchase of 300 millimeter wave units is off of an existing contract with L-3 Communications and includes the option to purchase an additional 200 units. President Obama’s fiscal 2011 budget included the purchase of 500 units, and the President’s fiscal 2012 budget requests funding for an additional 275 units,” said a TSA press release.

Another Department of Homeland Security (DHS) development announced in Napolitano’s address is a massive expansion of the “If You See Something, Say Something” campaign. A DHS press release said:

The “If You See Something, Say Something™” campaign originally partnered with the NFL in January 2011 during the Super Bowl XLVI, and is now expanding the campaign to the Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens, Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, and San Diego Chargers with digital and video materials displayed at each stadium. Similarly, the “If You See Something, Say Something™” campaign partnerships with MLB began last season and has now expanded to the Chicago White Sox and the Baltimore Orioles. The USTA has announced their partnership with the “If You See Something, Say Something™” campaign for a second year, and have displayed digital and print materials during all matches. Other partnerships with the “If You See Something, Say Something™” campaign have been recently launched by the states of Florida and Maryland, the cities of Baltimore and Newark, the Inaugural Baltimore Grand Prix, and state and major urban area fusion centers across the country.

    Still a bunch of perverts.

    • wandamurline

This is why I do not fly anymore…the likelihood of my being arrested is about 99% because I still believe that no matter what, TSA does not have the Constitutional authority to be putting their hands down my panties and up my butt, and anyone who is willing to do that will get a response from me that will ultimately cause my arrest. We have got to stop this police state…this is ridiculous and if someone puts their hands down my granddaughter’s panties, they will get the same treatment….laid out on the concrete. When we again get control of our government, we have got to stop TSA in its tracks. They are out of control…it is evident that the criminals and the terrorists arrested, have more rights than the ordinary citizen trying to board an airplane. This is a test to see how much the people will take from the overreaching government.

        Wandamurline,
With the new “procedures” in place, I have not been on an airplane for the same reasons you gave. I know I’ll be attacked by the s.w.a.t teams, local police, National Guard etc, etc.
Prior to all this I travelled a lot to Military bases, Rocket launches for my employer as an engineer and on top of that I am a certified aircraft technician performing flight checks.
I hope this crazieness will change soon…. Thanks

Instead of the sweeping generalized statement of hate and prejudice such as this one and the statements from Wandurmaline…why not direct your energies to the person in charge? Janet Napolitano? Are you spearheading a mass campaign calling for her removal? Are you boycotting the airlines? Are you culling your neighborhood with petitions to end the TSA? Are you writing and calling your senators and representatives? Are you flooding the mail with mass protest and dissent? I would say that is a lot more effective than blatantly discriminating against every TSA agent in America which only foments more hatred.

  • Elevenarrows

My family boycotts the airlines. We are simply not giving up one more freedom…PERIOD. I wonder how many Americans feel safer knowing the elderly can’t smuggle bombs in their bloomers!

    • eddie47d

Must be expensive to fly 11 family members. At least you’ll be saving a bundle. I cringe whenever I have purchase 2 tickets.

  • John Hardman

I feel ever so much better knowing that our little children are being cut some slack by the heavy handed Airport Goons regarding mandatory shoe removal. Our Home Land Security Queen Janet Napoletano is a real piece of work; I wonder what planet she was discovered on. We have a huge problem in addition to the obvious Muslim Terrorist situation; we have 70 card carrying comunists sitting in Congress as we speak and no one seems to think much about it….duh.
We need to end the Political Aristocracy that presently resides within the wall of the CONGRESS, SENATE and White House CZAR COLLECTION.

    • TOM DUNNE

JOHN YOU ARE SO RIGHT,2012 IS COMING FOR THEM!

    • eddie47d

Hopefully your comment won’t hit the media since there are no 70 CARD CARRYING communists in Congress.Your saying so only puts you on the side of the wackos. You may assume such misinformation garners votes but most Americans reject such assumptions.

      • Knob

Card carrying or not, they are still communist.

      • s c

e, Lenin and Marx said socialism and communism were synonymous terms. Consequently, being a ‘card-carrying’ member of this or that makes no difference.
There are at least 60 socialists in Congress. At the top of the heap is that certified dingbat (from Vermont?) named Bernie Sanders, who dares to call himself an Independent.
There are reasons why words have meanings. And that is also why real education is so important. Sadly, most people settle for a public school education. In that setting, people are at the mercy of a mindset that hates freedom and is determined to make a mockery of education (and the SOBs have done a damned good job of it, too). Abort the Department of Non-Education!

    • EltonJ

      Janet came from Planet Spaceball.

  • Free Mind

Thank you John Hardman-you hit the nail right on the head.
Anyway, why would a so called terrorist try to get on a plane when all they have to do is join the swarms of illegals swarming over the southern border?
Our main concern should be the enemies within.
Like I said in the Supreme court case posted today, TSA is about control and government sponsored terror and populace compiance.

  • Jim

The FDA’s approval for short exposure x-ray screening was based on single exposure, not multiple exposures. The Bier Committee dosimetry guidelines, which are the basis of their calculations, list at-risk populations as the young and elderly. Specifically, the FDA has not looked at multiple exposure risks for those under 15 to ionizing radiation. The TSA is proceeding without guidance, as usual. I won’t even talk about the other at-risk populations who will, similarly, be afforded increased risk. The fatality estimates for exposure that I have seen, and talked to the FDA about, have listed between 700 to 800 deaths per year estimated. The Agencies involved consider this trivial in view of the numbers of people involved. With the procedures being changed to add additional exposure to a population already considered sensitive and the Bier Committee’s view that responses to 70 – 80 kVp x-ray exposure is linear, you can draw your own conclusion.

  • Bob G

I will not fly anymore. The first person that puts hands on me is going down. Anyone even applying for a TSA job has to be a sick individual.

    • Song

Really Bob G? Some people would say that very same thing about our military. With statements like yours, you are only falling into the trap of dividing America even further.

  • Free Mind

Bob G…you are right on! If everyone had that attitude the problem would cease.

    • Bus

Where can the pedephiles get a job to match their talents now?

      • s c

Bus, there is a lot of truth in what you say. Most people who see your comment won’t dwell on it very long. They must realize that America’s pedophiles are waiting in the wings for a ‘glorious leader’ who will make them “tolerable.”
If you’re not familiar with a twisted group called NAMBLA, do a Google search. For what it’s worth, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to find pedophiles already ‘on the job’ at TSA. They tried to get “blessed” by Bubba Clinton, but he was cagey enough to put the idea on a back burner.
Do you think Obummer is above welcoming such ^#$^* into his big tent? To a yahoo like Obummer, a vote is a vote is a vote.

  • TOM DUNNE

WE SHOULD DO WHAT ISRAEL DOES,NO ONE COMPLAINING THERE,NO ACTS OF TERROR ON THEIR PLANES!WE SHOULD FORCE THIS ROGUE GOVERNMENT TO USE ISRAELS METHODS,THRY OFFERED TO HELP US PUT THEM IN PLACE BUT WE REFUSED.IF YOU CAN AVOID FLYING,DO SO AND E-MAIL HOLDER AND JANET AND TELL THEM WHY.WHEN WE AND ALL AIRLINES COMPLAIN LOUDLY,ONLY THEN WILL THEY LISTEN.2012 IS COMING FOR THEM! I DRIVE WHEN I CAN OR USE AMTRACK OR STAY LOCAL.

    • Song

      Exactly Tom. Good points.

    • John

Tom. You better enjoy Amtrak and your car as much as you can, Because they are the next targets for illegal searches and radiation bombing. They have already implemented the scanners and TSA in bus stations ie; Greyhound, I have been through it and will never ever ride Greyhound not that i wanted too in the first place

  • CJ-CA

Big Whoopee, Nappylitano! Keep your hands out of my undies and I’ll keep mine from around your thick neck.

    • TOM DUNNE

CJ-CA,LETS REMIND ALL OUR REPRESENTATIVES,THEY ARE NOT OUR LEADERS.THEY WERE HIRED TO REPRESENT US AND WILL BE FIRED IF THEY DONT.LETS ALSO REMIND THEM OF WHAT OUR CONSTITUTION SAYS ABOUT A “ROGUE” GOVERNMENT!2012 IS COMING FOR THEM.KEEP YOUR MUSKET CLEAN AND POWDER DRY!

  • Altaica

Every time I hear about the TSA all I can think about is the movie “V for Vendetta.” I don’t want to fly at all because I feel no-one but a Significant other and my doctor should be anywhere near my erogenous zones. I live 24 hours from my relatives and am even thinking of driving that, and I hate driving that long a distance.

“People should not be afraid of their governments, governments should be afraid of their people.” V from V from Vendetta.

It is frightening as to how well that movie correlates to events unfolding.

  • AJ

I’d like to know what slimy politicians are making money on the sale of [Advanced Imaging Technology] units that was so conveniently pushed on us by the CIA aided underwear bomber. I wonder who’s coffers L-3 Communications poured money into? Follow the momey anyone?
