Tropical Storm Gert Heads For Bermuda

MIAMI, Aug. 15 (UPI) — A tropical storm warning was posted for Bermuda Monday, with Tropical Storm Gert expected to strengthen as it moved toward the island, forecasters said.

Gert, about 175 miles southeast of Bermuda, had maximum sustained winds of 60 mph and was moving along a northerly path at 14 mph, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said in its 5 a.m. EDT advisory.

The storm was expected to turn toward the north-northeast and increase in forward speed, passing near Bermuda later in the day, the center said.

Gert was expected to produce 1-3 inches of rain on Bermuda, forecasters said. Large swells, likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip-current conditions, were approaching the island.
