Tropical Storm Emily Forms In Atlantic

MIAMI, Aug. 1 (UPI) — Tropical storm warnings were posted throughout a large portion of the Caribbean Sea Monday after Tropical Storm Emily formed in the Atlantic Ocean.

At 7:30 p.m. EDT, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said the storm was located about 50 miles west-southwest of Dominica and about 565 miles southeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico, with top sustained winds of 40 mph. Emily was moving west at 17 mph and tropical storm-force winds extended as much as 70 miles outward from the center of the storm.

The government of Barbados issued a tropical storm warning for Dominica. French government officials issued a tropical storm warning for the islands of Guadeloupe, Desirade, Les Saints and Marie Galante. A tropical storm warning was also in effect for Puerto Rico and the islands of Vieques and Culebra, forecasters in Miami said. The government of the Dominican Republic posted a tropical storm watch for the entire island nation and Antigua and Barbuda issued a tropical storm watch for the islands of St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat and Antigua.

A tropical storm watch was in effect for the U.S. Virgin Islands and for Haiti.

Forecasters said a turn toward the west-northwest, along with a slight decrease in forward speed, were likely during the next two days. On its forecast track, Emily is likely to move across the northern Caribbean Monday night and approach the island of Hispaniola Tuesday night and Wednesday, forecasters said.

Tropical storm conditions are possible in the U.S. Virgin Islands by Monday night and early Tuesday, in Puerto Rico by Tuesday, the Dominican Republic by Tuesday night, and in Haiti by Wednesday.
