Tropical Storm Don Heads South Of Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas, July 29 (UPI) — Tropical Storm Don shifted course southward and is expected to hit the Texas coast south of Corpus Christi, forecasters said Friday morning.

Jason Runyan, lead local forecaster for the National Weather Service, told the Corpus Christi Caller Times Don was headed for landfall after midnight near Baffin Bay, south of Kingsville, but could change course back toward Corpus Christi.

The weather service has narrowed the coastline under a tropical storm warning to Matagorda Bay south to the mouth of the Rio Grande.

The National Hurricane Center said at 7 a.m. CDT Don was 255 miles southeast of Corpus Christi in the Gulf of Mexico, moving west-northwest at 14 mph and packing maximum sustained winds of 50 mph.

At landfall, Don is forecast to carry maximum sustained winds of up to 60 mph with gusts to 70 mph up to 30 miles from the center. Winds of 40- to 50 mph are expected up to 105 miles from the center, Runyan said.

Landfall is expected at low tide, which will reduce storm surges. There also is a danger of isolated tornadoes Friday night into Saturday.

The drought-stricken area could get 3- to 5-inches of sorely needed rain from the storm.
