Tree Cracks On Way To Macy’s Roof

ATLANTA, Nov. 14 (UPI) — Officials with an Atlanta Macy’s store said the 60-foot white pine tree chosen to top the store for the holiday season cracked at it was lifted.

Macy’s spokeswoman Melissa Goff said the trunk of the 11,000-pound tree cracked as it was being lifted Sunday morning but a backup tree will be brought from Douglas County before the scheduled lighting Thanksgiving night, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Monday.

Goff said the backup tree, which has already been selected, was being cut down Monday and will likely go up by the end of the week.

She said the tree search was extra difficult this year due to recent drought conditions making many trees too dry to survive being lifted to the top of the store without breaking.
