Township Workers Say Small Talk Ban Hurts Morale

FLUSHING TOWNSHIP, Mich., (UPI) —  Employees of a Michigan township said a supervisor’s ban on small talk during business hours is a drain on their morale.

Flushing Township Supervisor Rian Birchmeier instituted a policy in late July banning employees from discussing anything but business during business hours and some workers are say the policy has been harmful, WNEM-TV, Saginaw, Mich., reported Wednesday.

“I don’t agree with it,” township clerk Julia Morford said of the policy. “There’s times when we want to talk about crafts or family or things like that. And as long as the employees get their work done, that’s the main thing.”

Morford said the rules have been harmful to employee morale.

“It does make it kind of stressful,” she said.

“You have to have a high morale in the office,” said Morford. “And you can’t do that when you restrict the employees.”

Birchmeier told WNEM-TV he has no comment on the issue.
