The Thyroid is Related to Cholesterol Metabolism

The Thyroid is Related to Cholesterol Metabolism

Blood cholesterol is elevated in persons with a lower-functioning thyroid. The gland depends upon iodine for its normal function. Without iodine the thyroid cannot produce its hormone, thyroxine. When the thyroid is not supplied with sufficient iodine, there is an increase in the size of the thyroid gland, a condition called “goiter.” This can be reduced by simply taking iodine.

So when the thyroid is overactive there is a calcium loss; when the thyroid is underactive, we have cholesterol accumulation.

We can measure our own thyroid balance by taking underarm basal temperature for about five days in a row. This means taking morning temperature under your arm before you get out of bed in the morning.

Normal body temperature is 98.6. If it is below this, even as much as one degree, we need more iodine and/or thyroxin in the form of Armour desiccated hormone. Do not take a synthetic thyroid hormone that most doctors prescribe.

Your Thyroid & Your Heart:

Low basal temperature mentioned above means low basal metabolism, which controls the rate at which each cell burns the food that gives us energy. This directly relates to our quality of life because thyroid deficiency may mimic any disease. For this reason, every man, woman and child should test their basal (at rest) body temperature. About half of the population suffers from some degree of thyroid deficiency.

Most allopathic doctors ignore thyroid function and when they do test function, they do so with a blood profile which most of the time does not pick up low thyroid function. If thyroid function is to be treated, it usually is a lifetime protocol. Hypothyroidism (low thyroid function) is serious but is very easy to detect with the self basal temperature test and it is equally easy to treat. Doctors will start hypothyroid patients on very low doses (about 0.5 gram) and build up over months.

The first hint of the connection of heart disease with low thyroid function (hypothyroidism) came when investigators demonstrated that elevated cholesterol could be brought down to normal with thyroid therapy. Thyroid therapy does reduce the rate of formation of atherosclerosis in the heart arteries. I never heard or read where an allopathic cardiologist observed or knew this.

Broda O. Barnes, M.D., Ph.D., concluded after thousands of case histories that the hypothyroid patient at a young age—or any age—is unusually susceptible to heart attacks. Even in the hypothyroid infant, atherosclerosis starts. Barnes says that atherosclerosis results from thyroid deficiency and not from the elevated serum fats that accompany it. He said that 95 percent of the cholesterol levels returned to normal with only thyroid therapy.

I recommend the book, Solved: The Riddle of Heart Attacks, by Broda O. Barnes, M.D., Ph.D.

Where were you Right Wingers when Bush was spending our money on his phony war in Iraq? You sound like the same people who discount the great work of FDR and call the New Deal a failure. By the way, the average working stiff doesn’t think of Social Security as a failure. People like you always scream bloody murder when a President does anything that might help the working class. I repeat when you man Bush lied us into that damn war and cut taxes for the rich, where was all the negativity then. Let the President try to save us from the mess you Conservatives put us in for the last eight years. Obama has been in office for 3 weeks facing the worst disaster since 1929. You greedy Conservatives have had your way since that old fool Regan. Clinton didn’t have the guts to take you clowns on – I pray God Obama does. As a combat Veteran I say We are all our Brothers Keeper. God Bless America!

    • Les

What an ignorant post, Robert. Haven’t you read the news?

Several members of Obama’s administration have had tax problems, and Obama has a half brother that lives in a tin hut In Nairobi. Yet Obama hasn’t given one dime to his brother George, who doesn’t even have a pot to pee in, much less a toilet.

-And you think he’s going to take care of YOU? That’s a laugh, Robert.

You’ll be a lot less angry, if you stop looking to politicians for your welfare. Grow up, and take care of yourself, because Obama won’t.

    • http://TexCon Debra Urias

Wow, Robert, what an interesting tirade. I would assume you consider me a greedy conservative because I choose to work two full time jobs and one part-time job, make more than six figures, and I don’t want to pay any more taxes to support lazy Americans and illegal immigrants! I am a hard working American who does not want to give away her money, earned by hard work and dedication, to people like you! I paid my own way through college by working a full time job. I have saved, not lived beyond my means and invested my money; and you call me greedy??? You, and the countless others who believe they deserve to be given something for nothing, are what’s wrong with our country. You need to read the post by Gary S again and again and again!!!!

  • Gary S

Robert, where to start? You need to do some research. A lot of it. Phony war? How soon you libs like to forget that Sen. Clinton, and all the rest of the Demunists looked at the SAME EVIDENCE as Pres. Bush and they all AGREED for the need to go in.
When it took more than a week, they all ran for cover and attacked the Pres., thanks to the help of the Socialist/Communist media. Did you forget how many hundreds of THOUSANDS of his own people Sodamned Insane murdered? Don’t get me wrong, I am not Bush’s best fan. He lied to us too, and sold us out with no fence. Wake up.
WWII got us out of the great depression. FDR needlessly PROLONGED the recession with the “New Deal” (socialism). Don’t believe me, do your research. Working class people like SS? Sure, leeches like you always love eating out of someone else’s wallet. SS is a ponzi scheme which your beloved liberals have robbed blind so that it is only a matter of time to collapse. Ohbombus did not inherit the worst economy since ’29. ’82 was worse than this, according to the numbers. The Demunists FORCED the banks to make bad loans to dirtbags. You know, your buddies like Franks and Dodds. Never heard of them you say? Oh, yeah, you don’t believe in finding the truth, I forgot. Bush cut taxes for the AVERAGE American, as did Reagan. If you think the wealthy are the problem, who is going to hire you? Maybe that criminal illegal alien? Most wealthy EARNED it thru work harder than most are willing to do. THEN they hire people. I know, you’d rather be a victim. Let ‘uncle’ take care of you by bleeding everyone else dry. Have you noticed the stock market tanking? It’s because intelligent people realize Ohbombus is bringing about the collapse of America. He is a liar, and a financial terrorist, as you shall see. You are about to lose your freedoms to this terrorist. Time to wake up, and soon. Many have found the truth through listening to Hannity, Levin, Beck, Savage, Coulter, Limbaugh, Larson, and the list goes on. I don’t expect you will listen to them and research what they say to find the truth. You are too comfortable keeping your head in the sand, and your hand in my wallet. You are right about one thing! Clinton didn’t have guts. The CIA tried to hand him Osama repeatedly, but he wasn’t interested. He was too busy giving away sensitive intel to the Chinese and leaving his DNA on a dress… With all due respect, thank you for your service to this country and freedom.

Oh my gosh, you, Mr. Gary S., just spoke every unspoken thought I have in my brain. I believe you have answered for thousands, who know you are right. There is not one sentence in your answer that I disagree with. I, like you, am certainly not a big fan of George Bush, but let me tell you, this mess did not start with George Bush, it started way before that with Bill Clinton. Why people hold him up as a national hero is beyond me. Forcing the banks to give housing loans to anyone who asked, so as not to hurt anyone’s feelings was the start. Responsible people, black or white or whatever color, know whether or not they can afford to buy a home. To take a home, knowing full well you cannot pay for it, is ludicrous and careless and in the end has hurt every single American. The rest of us worked hard, scrimped by and saved every dime until we had a downpayment on that dreamed-about home, that left us with a monthly payment we knew was within the boundries of our budgets. Nobody gave us anything, nor did we ask. Hardworking Americans, no matter what the race, are sick and tired of working ourselves to death so everyone else can take a “free ride” at our expense. Yes, I too, am counting on getting social security when I reach whatever age it will be when they get through jacking with it, but doubt I will ever see a dime, because the money I thought I was saving for my retirement has been squandered. So, I think to myself, “okay, I still have my 401-K to fall back on” wrong again, most of that has been lost. So you see, Robert, maybe you haven’t walked a mile in these conservative, hard working, God-fearing shoes, but you may see before too long that maybe you should have. God help us all. And by the way, I do thank you for your service to this great country. My husband is also a combat vet of one of the most unpopular wars of all, Vietnam, and disabled I might add, who also spent several years in the reserves. He doesn’t whine about it, or usually even mention it, he was just proud to be an American. The threat of Socialism is real folks, and everyone better take a second look at what is going on in front of our very eyes.

I don’t know who Gary S. is, but Gary knows his history. He could have said much more, i’m sure. Wake up America. LOOK at whats going on. HISTORY is repeating itself. Yes! The American public has spoken and this IS what you have elected. If you sit back and say nothing, then you are part of the problem. Obambus needs direction from YOU bacause what he has appointed CAN”T do it. Do your history and GET informed. This is so that 2hrs from now you can vote to CHANGE the CHANGES you don’t like. The CONGRESS makes the laws and pork and ……… , Not the president. But the president is supose to provide direction. Your elected congress IS supose to carry out the will of the PEOPLE. iF THIS IS not YOUR WILL, THEN VOTE THOSE IN THAT WILL. Go back and RE-READ what Garry S. wrote. Chew on it. Watch O-Riley, Rush, Hanedy, Etc. GET INFORMED. Formulate YOUR own opinion from FACTUAL information and not heresay.

It never ceases to amaze me when encountering a liberal defending democrats or their stimulus package, they all say ‘well Bush did this or that.” What are they really saying – he did it, so we can do it – or, if one person does wrong then others are allowed to do wrong. (This is very self-centered and childlike.) HEY, liberals! If your dislike for Bush or what he did is based on REAL PRINCIPLES, then you would hold your own to the same – otherwise, it’s all rhetoric and bull. I’m a “thorn in the side” black or white, absolutist – no room for me in liberalism and know not to trust them. Just about know, I can imagine your thoughts…..these are the ones we will kill-off, or, if only she had enrolled for a degree, we could have shaped her superstitious mind and enlightened her (sounds like a religion – secular humanism) FACT: if a conservative lies they are a hypocrite because they are going agianst what they taught and live by. For liberals, well it’s just all relative. GOD bless America.

  • Bobbi

Being conservative does not imply wealth! I was left to support three (3) children by myself. I didn’t get welfare, food stamps or section 8 housing! I had my car & my home repossessed, never got a dime for child support.
What I did was find 2 jobs, a new place to rent that fit in my budget & purchased another vehicle when I was able to. And I know I wasn’t the only one who went through the same thing. I didn’t expect for the government to take care of me and trust me I was far far from great wealth! Never have reached that status! It’s not the conservatives who have driven this once great nation into trillions of dollars of debt! It’s ‘liberals” who expect the government to GIVE them everything they WANT not just need that have caused this outrage! Illegals and 2nd & 3rd gerneration welfare recipients have cost the working conservatives more than they ever deserved! MY tax dollars while supporting myself plus 3 went for welfare “moms” too lazy to get off their butts & find work. This nation was built on hard work & thrived on hard work until the ‘few” thought they shouldn’t have to do what the government would.
So liberals when you get up one morning & find all your freedoms are gone thank your big fat government! Cause you don’t get anything without a price!

  • http://barayasarra@msn.com Eileen Barayasarra

My first husband ran off with his true love when I was pregnant with my 4th child. Oldest child was 5. I refused to go on welfare. I have never used a food stamp either. Now I am almost 70 years old and my second husband and I WERE financially solvent until the economic collapse. I suppose we are still better off than many. Nobody gave us anything. We earned everything we have and everything but my new car is paid for. I pay ahead on that. We are not greedy but we do not want to support people unwilling to work. Having a baby is not a physical disability. I worked pregnant, I worked with small children at a sitter, but I worked! We paid our taxes on time every time. Rich Liberal Democrats can get by with not paying, but everyone else has to. Suck it up, put on your big boy panties and go whine at someone who cares.

  • Ronald

Gary S, try listening to Glenn Beck a little closer. You will become less polarized.
Leave Robert Gumbs alone. I don’t necessarily agree with him, but thats his opinion, and he hurts no one by expressing it.

It’s not the conservatives who have driven this once great nation into trillions of dollars of debt! It’s ‘liberals” who expect the government to GIVE them everything they WANT not just

Bobbi, while I applaud your ethic, you are very mislead about the so called federal debt.
Yes Liberal social programs cost money, but so do running global empires. The American taxpayer would never have supported the kind of taxes it would have cost us all, to maintain our status as world cop with global military reach on a balanced budget.
So our leaders kept our taxes bearable {?} and simply borrowed the rest.

But even this “borrowing” is questionable. If I need $500.00 and I come to you and ask you for it, and you simply write $500.00 on a sheet of paper that I can spend like money, and you say, pay me back $600.00, did it really cost you anything? Well thats what happens between the Treasury and the “Federal” Reserve. Its all BS. They create money out of thin air. There is nothing backing it at all. Its just paper and ink. It only has value because they say it does. So if you can create wealth out of thin air, or imiginary reserves, then wouldn’t it stand to reason that any “debt” associated with this practice is also imaginary? Its all crap…..

  • Ronald

Has anybody even read Bob’s excellent article on thyroid disorder?
His article is accurate. I know, because I have hypothyroidism, and Dr Broda Barnes is an excellent source of reliable information on thyroid. If you have thyroid disorder, read what Dr Broda Barnes has to say, because its better than what you will get from your local endrocrinologist. Dr Barnes was the very best. God rest his soul.

    Ronald.

Elaine, ” but let me tell you, this mess did not start with George Bush, it started way before that with Bill Clinton. ”

It actually started a little before Bill Clinton. Both parties supported it. It was a piece of legislation called the Federal Housing Enterprises Financial Safety and Soundness Act of 1992. Drafted during the H W Bush Administration, passed during the Clinton Administration.
Further supported by George W Bush and his goal of 5.5 million new low income minority home owners by the end of the decade. I remember the speech….
It directly lead to this financial disaster. Both parties responsible….

    @Ronald

Wow! Only one sentence for me. I’m jealous! Everyone else received a minimum of at least a paragraph.

Not much you could say, huh!

  • KCD

In getting back to talking about the thyroid – which I thought was what this article is all about – I was on ‘synthetic’ thyroid meds for a couple years and then I had to go on heart meds.I later found Armour Thyroid and thyroid stabilized and so did heart problems.

Then the big pharmaceuticals within the last year or so got in the way and forced Armour to make some changes all with the government’s help to enforce with the sole purpose of putting Armour out of business, and so I can no longer get Armour for my thyroid. I was forced to go back on Synthroid – and immediately began losing hair and having heart problems again.

So all of you who are talking about politics and such – yes, I have strong opinions about that – but this is supposed to be about thyroid. NOW – don’t even get me started on the Health Reform crap they are trying to push through -
