The RDA Hoax (Recommended Daily Allowance)

March 6, 2009 by

The RDA Hoax (Recommended Daily Allowance)

One way to suppress nutrition and its health benefits is the establishment of a nebulous, arbitrary and meaningless standard of measurement such as the RDA or “Recommended Daily Allowance.”

The purpose of the RDA hoax is to get the public to accept it as the gold standard. This is what has happened.

A prime example is in the case of vitamin D. The RDA for vitamin D has indeed practically wiped out rickets in the United States. But this is a camouflage for the need of much higher amounts of vitamin D—1,000 to 3,000 units daily even up to 10,000 in the case of tuberculosis (TB)—as proven therapy for patients with cancer, heart disease, dementia, autoimmune disease, influenza A, chronic pain, depression, gingivitis, the common cold and dozens of other diseases associated with vitamin D deficiency.

Laboratory evidence shows that TB can be prevented with vitamin D. Then straight off the press, a controlled clinical study showing vitamin D resulted in a 100 percent cure rate for TB patients, but they treated TB patients with 10,000 units of vitamin D a day—not the RDA 400.

Of course “orthodox medicine” screams toxicity. If you can experience natural healing therapy, you don’t need drugs. As Royal Lee, M.D., said, “One of the greatest deceptions is the treatment of symptoms with drugs instead of nutrition.” Starvation is being treated with drugs instead of nutrition.

As in the case with vitamin D, a certain amount of nutrition is required to get a therapeutic result—many times a large amount. This is not supposed to be known to the public.

Iodine

The RDA for iodine is outright deception. The medical establishment, Institute of Medicine, says 150 micrograms per day for adults and less for children.

Guy Abraham, M.D., at UCLA School of Medicine and researcher of iodine says that 12.5 milligrams per day (that’s 12,500 micrograms) is the optimal dose, and that’s 83 times more than the RDA. Chances are very high that most of us are not getting nearly enough iodine.

We think in terms of overdose but the risk of underdose may be the highest risk when taking nutritional supplements. The big exception to this would be taking mega doses of synthetic vitamins. When we use synthetic instead of natural or organic, we go from food to pharmacology. Pharmacology is chemicals made in the laboratory. It is not food or nutrition.

The high risk of public fixation on the RDA is that we underdose on vital nutrition as in vitamin D and iodine.

We have to think of iodine in the United States as a dietary supplement because there is little in the soil that would translate into food production. The Japanese consume more iodine mostly from seaweed and they have much lower breast cancer. In fact, they have much lower rates of all cancer including prostate cancer.

Thyroid Health

Forty percent of the U.S. population has hypothyroidism, which is low thyroid function leading to a multitude of illnesses including heart disease and cancer.

So many people are on thyroid medication (hopefully on Armour natural thyroid), but all these people should also be taking iodine. The reason is that unless we get enough iodine with our thyroid supplement, we may be raising the risk of breast cancer and prostate cancer. The fact is if we had enough diet iodine, we wouldn’t have low thyroid function and wouldn’t need medication.

Hypothyroidism is a nutritional deficiency of the vital mineral iodine. It is extremely fundamental to health.

You can check your own thyroid function. It’s simply a matter of body temperature. The normal body temperature is 98.6º F.

Take your underarm temperature in the morning before you get out of bed and as you wake up, preferably with a shake down mercury thermometer. Leave the thermometer on the nightstand or table by your bed at night. Take your morning temperature at rest, underarm temperature for five days in sequence and record your average—which you get by adding them up and dividing by five.

If you are as much as one degree under 98.6, you are hypothyroid and you at least need daily iodine supplementation. I can’t go into it here, but conventional blood tests in a doctor’s clinic do not accurately show your thyroid function. Tens of thousands of people are struggling daily with low energy and obesity just because a blood test showed “normal” thyroid function. Do the body temperature test on yourself and your family.

If your thyroid is two to four degrees low, you need thyroid hormone by prescription from your doctor. Ask for the Armour natural. You should also take daily iodine supplement (see below for sources and amount).

Iodine displaces or flushes chlorine, bromine, fluorine, lead, cadmium, arsenic, aluminum and mercury with safety. In today’s world this is huge!

Sources and Amounts

I have never read of any injury because of iodine but don’t take more than 12 to 14 milligrams daily. Japanese researchers say that they have found cases of hypothyroidism caused by excess iodine, 20 mgs daily or more.

Lugol’s iodine is an old favorite. Two to four drops in water for an adult would be okay.

Iodoral from compounding pharmacies and some health food stores—one tablet daily.

Another choice is Prolamine Iodine. This is an all-natural, vegetarian source.

All three can be purchased from Amazon.com.

Iodine is powerful and can be used in many ways. It’s an excellent water purifier. It can cure infection.

From The Cure for All Cancers by Hulda Clark, Ph.D.: “Salmonella and Shigella are two stomach and digestive tract bacteria. Six drops of Lugol’s solution can end it all for Salmonella and Shigella. If you have gas and bloating, pour yourself ½ glass of water. Add six drops of Lugol’s exactly, stir with wood or plastic and drink at once. The action is noticeable in an hour. Take this dose four times a day, after meals and at bedtime for three days in a row, then as needed.

“Notice how calming six drops of Lugol’s can be, soothing a manic stage and bringing a peaceful state where anxiety ruled before. Lugol’s is perfectly safe (if not allergic) to take day after day when needed because of its peculiar attaching property. It arrives in the stomach and then reattaches to everything in proximity. Doomed are Salmonella and Shigella; doomed also are eggs (cysts) of parasites that might be in the stomach.”

Unless we read a lot (which I recommend), we go by the RDA hoax. As you can see in just two examples of vitamin D and iodine, the RDA leads us into, or keeps us in, a deficiency state and disease.

Thank you Bob for a wonderful article.

The only thing I thought it lacking was the simplest and cheapest way to get the appropriate amount of vitamin D daily.

Sunshine. Go into the sunshine until your skin just starts to lightly pinken. Then cover up.

You will never hear the FDA touting any cure that will not generate more tax revenue.

    Viva le’ summer!

strong text Dear Bob; Great article. I have just celerbrated my 80th birthday. I started on my nutritional program in 1971 with a very prominent Company from Northern California. With a background in Reasearch & Development, Field test programs, Failure Analyses in Electronic Engineering, I started personal research on nutrition. I had experienced within 5 days, a very significant change in my physical condition from long hours and extensive stress. In 1971, I had read an article about the development of the national RDA table. I believe that the article stated that the values quoted, were developed from patients in a hospital, to sustain the life of a patient only. We started a distributor business with the Company. We have seen a multitude of persons have their health restored. A member of my church {she was about 29 in 1983} as an adult, had the mentality of about a 7 or 8 year old. We started her on several vitamens. Today she is living a full life on her own and is still ordering products from us. A side note; I started a Law Enforcement career in 1993, attended a State Police Academy in 1998, at 68 years young, passing all physical requirements and training. Still very active in LE as a Certified Senior Chaplain with the International Conference of Police Chaplains, Disaster Response Team, and much more!
    God Bless you.

Thanks again, Bob. Good health is not an accident. Even now, those who are seen as medical health experts are typically self-serving hucksters (the AMA is only one of these groups). It should not come as any surprise that many MDs will not submit to their own diabolical protocols when THEY become ill (i. e., “this crap is for you lesser mortals – not me”).
Dig for your information. Get healthy and stay healthy. You are not obligated to make license-toting con artists wealthy at the expense of your health.

    • Wayne

You must be an expert in the medical world and know all about the AMA… right??

    Bob,

This is fantastic information. I was just speaking to Cori Brackett (of “Sweet Misery” and “Sweet Remedy” fame) about how the RDA is equivalent to giving everyone (1)one shoe size !! Ludicrous !

The previous studies regarding Vitamin D and their (supposed) ineffectiveness, were clearly industry-sponsored studies conceived to mislead the public (should be a criminal proceeding for this kind of intentional misinformation at the corporate level)…

In any event, keep up the excellent work…many folks rely on your research and insights. Thank you, Bob, for helping keep us healthy !!

    Bob,
I have a WWII Father, (now 85) who the VA finally acknowledged some of his service connected disabilities like SEVERE hearing loss, tinnnitus, and PTSD. But, Dad is also DX with “White matter brain disease.” He is very high-functioning, and is on a RX called: Galantamine (generic) am and pm for this disorder. But, have YOU or anyone else you know ever heard of the possibility that Alzheimer’s/White Matter Brain Disease could be associated with heavy Combat like my Father lived through on the Front Lines for three years in Europe under General Patton? I would like to file a claim with the VA for this. I believe the PTSD, and other stresses contributed to this diagnosis? Thank you for your consideration! Concerned daughter/caregiver

    • Merritt

Many thanks to your father for his sacrifical behavior during that great conflict. WE WON, thanks to him and many others – and to God’s blessing!

      1) I’m not a medical expert of any kind but understand that hearing problems abound in combat vets because of exposure to the loud noises of armaments,

      2) Is the “White matter brain disease” what is also known as “mad cow disease”? If so it is probably not due to combat. “Mad cow”, is a realative new disease and seems to eminate from Europe, especially from England.

You won’t hear personal accounts of it from most news sources, but I know of one American who was discovered to have this disease (and died from it in about 3 years) after a visit to England where she ate ground beef.

It’s not from undercooked meats – it’s a non-functional distorted (right-handed) protein molecule that gradually takes the place of functional protein in the nervous system in general. When it gets large enough, body functions fail and death follows. (from PBS and various others)

If your dad spent time in England or ate food rations provided by England there’s a remote possibility that he contracted this disease from those foods. But that’s pretty remote.

      • Inanna

It’s not that Kreutsfeld-jakob emanates from england, it’s simply that it’s much more public in england, because the problem was addressed, and dealt with. As far as the past 10 + years are concerned, you should be more worried about contaminated american beef, than british beef.

  • Patrick

I am not surprised by the RDA (Really Dumb Amounts) coming out of the Air. The FDA (Fools and Dummies Administration) is the lap dog of the Drug Industry.

  • Joyce

    Bob,
I read your article about Iodine where it said take a certain amount (if not allergic). Had a question. How do you determine if you are allergic to Iodine? Need an easy test because I believe I am short on Iodine, because I am showing several of the indicators you mentioned, but do not know if I’m allergic to it.

  • Mung

    Dear Bob,
Thanks so much for an important piece of info. You have been so kind and helpful in helping others. God bless.

    RE: Armour thyroid

I am 90 years old and have used Armour thyroid for 60 years (2 or 3 grains per day). A year ago I tried to refill my prescription and was told by the WalMart pharmacist that the product was on “indefinite back order” and wanted to substitute Synthroid at a much higher price.

Inquiry at other pharmacies leads me to believe that Armour thyroid is being taken off the market. I found another pharmcy with enough to supply me for a year. When that runs out, I plan to subsist on Iodoral and kelp.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sign Petition To Stop Television Prescription Drug Ads
    http://www.gopetition.com/online/26241.
Published by Marlene B. on Mar 18, 2009
    Category: Health
    Region: GLOBAL
Target: U.S. Congress, FCC, FDA, European Commission, EMEA

    Background (Preamble):
Statistics prove prescription drugs are 16,400% more deadly than terrorists. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in 1998, a report finds that prescription drugs kill about 106,000 Americans each year – that’s three times as many as are killed by automobiles—making prescription drug death the fourth leading killer after heart disease, cancer and stroke.

Last year, the Journal of the American Medical Association puts death from all drugs, illegal and prescription, second only behind car accidents as a cause of death.

The rise in deaths coincides with the direct marketing of prescription medication to the public. Prescription drug sales have soared nearly 500 percent since 1990.

The pharmaceutical industry is a multi-trillion dollar business. Companies spend billions on advertising and promotions for prescription drugs. Pharmaceutical companies claim their drug ads are “educational” to the public. The public seems to genuinely believe that drugs advertised on TV are safe, in spite of the plethora of side effects listed. Many of these drugs have proven deadly.

Every day it’s estimated 2,500 teens abuse a prescription pain killer for the first time.

The White House Office of National Drug Control policy had been planning to unveil an ad campaign to target prescription drug abuse by teens. It is time to stop this form of advertising by the pharmaceutical companies.
    Petition:
We, the undersigned, request that Congress, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), the FCC (Federal Communications Commission), the European Commission, EMEA (European Medicines Agency) stop all television advertising of prescription drugs.
THE LAST TIME A CURE WAS FOUND FOR A DISEASE

FOR POLIO. HE WAS JUST ONE MAN.
SINCE THAT TIME, HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS
HAVE BEEN SPENT ON DISEASE. NOT FOR A CURE, BUT FOR
