The Most Meaningless Holiday In America Is Now Over

September 7, 2011 by

Time was when Labor Day actually meant something — a day to celebrate "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor movement" in the United States. It started in the 1880s as a "day off" for the workingman. Congress voted to make it a national holiday in 1894. For most of the next century, it was a time for parades and picnics and even some pompous political speeches, all in honor of America’s workers. But that era has long since passed.

In the years I was growing up, Labor Day meant the traditional end of summer. For us kids, it was the last chance to frolic at the pool, head to the beach, or enjoy an outdoor barbecue before school began. But now, for many, school has been in session for two weeks or more by the time Labor Day rolls around.

Yes, technically, there are still 15 more days before summer is officially over. But for most of us, the reality is summer ends when school begins.

I’ll bet even the working men (and women) in America don’t think of Labor Day as a time when their countrymen honor them. Judging by what does get the most attention, Labor Day now means that the preseason football games are over and the first "real" games will soon be played.

But is that any reason to make it a national holiday?

Celebrating the unions is like celebrating organized crime.Come to think of it, our government could be included in this comparison, at least many of the “officials”, both elected and appointed who “serve ” by wheeling and dealing, intimidation and deception.

Herbert, What a GREAT POST Dude!

    • David

How about making it a holiday that is beneficial for all workers by instituting Right to Work laws, repealing regulations, and dismantling government bureaucracies?

I absolutely agree…the unions have seen their better days…at a time when they honestly took care of their members….those days are just as gone as Labor Day meanings. Now the unions are feathering the pockets of the elists in charge and do nothing for their members…they are as worthless as the teets on a boar hog. Every state should be a right to work state….if it were, we would have fewer businesses leaving for foreign countries. Fewer businesses means fewer jobs….even for the union workers. When are the members of these corrupt criminal organizations going to realize that they are being used and are part of the Massah’s plantation?

    My thoughts exactly.

When I was a kid, we did take time to pause and think about a day of leizure. Now with obama and the union’s targeting of the TP–really, not even a political party–that day has mud on it. This year it may be the beginning of blood day if the unions keep promoting violence.

Why don’t we repeal all the things that the unions have given us? Two day weekend, lunch hours, 15minute breaks, health care, overtime, anti-discrimination rules, vacations, safety rules in the workplace, 40 hour work week, just to name a few, should all be abolished. Let’s go back to the time when we didn’t have any rights. Here’s hoping that you conservative repeal everything that protects the workers, and everyone works 80 hours a week. So looking forward to a future like that!

Well said, EYES. My Dad was going to cheated out of his retirement benefits until the union stepped in and insisted they PAY. Without them, he yould have been cheated out of years of income he EARNED.
I will say, Jimmy did get a little out of conrol.
      Two generations of POWER.

Den said that his father would have been”cheated out of his pension” if the union hadn’t intervened. While I don’t know all the details of your father’s case, union pension plans are a promise to current workers. However if the union bosses are using current dues to enrich their own lifestyle or make political donations for favors, isn’t the whole promise a Ponzi scheme that can’t be sustained? Especially as union membership has dropped so dramatically. Also if his father was a public employee, he paid Nothing,Nada, Zilch in to the pension plan he was promised. Someone else was paying for it, making such a promise even more unsustainable.
Sorry, Den, but that is the truth.

Eyes, I work for a non-union shop and guess what? It isn’t the living hell you describe. People go to an employer asking for work, they aren’t sold into slavery. If things aren’t to your needs, you go down the street.
If the unemployment rate was 4.4%, like it was in 06, instead of around 10% under “Hope& Change”.
I guess it’s hard to celibrate a day honoring workers if your not working.
We still got the traditional boost in gas prices though. Some one still honors tradition.

    • wandamurline

Like I said…there WAS a time when the unions did stand for equality and safety in the workplace. Now, they do nothing but reel in money to put in the elists at the top pockets. We now have laws on the books for protection of the workers and one organization to oversee it…OSHA. Sorry, but your comment regarding losing all those things is not true….the unions have now outlived their necessity.

The poor working class, they get screwed by thier bosses and the souless corporations, and then they organize and get screwed by their union bosses. Its a tough bind to be in. Having been in a union that sent all my dues to the democrats in D.C. and out of the Union, I’ll throw my hopes at the feet of my employers. Granted the Unions did get a few things for the working class during the last century, but having access to all that pension money and the union dues has been a little too tempting to most of the Union leadership and they have become less trustworthy than a companies CEO that needs workers and has learned to treat them well in order to get the most productivity out of them.

    • wandamurline

No one, and I mean no one, should have to join a union to get a job…to me that is unconstitutional. Every state in America should be a right to work state….look around, the right to work states are creating more jobs, i.e. Texas.

  • ONTIME

Labor Day does not mean union, it is likely where ever there is no jobs, labor unrest and destructive demonstrations, you can bet in this day and age unions are involved. What we need is a government with no unionized labor and for that government to get off the backs of the free market, private sector and stop practicing cronyism within our industry, repeal much of this useless regulation, taxes and stop the strangulation of capitalism, the kind we have practiced for over 200 years….give us back our civil liberties and rights.

  • Buck

Yes! We need to eliminate labor day and replace it with a return of civil fights day , that is if we ever get our civil rigts back . Between Bushes patriot act and Obams bu—-it actions we are suffering a real deficit , and no I’m not talking money .

  • sirbourbon

Labor day. Is that a communist holiday?
You decide if the idea was really to celebrate hard workers why didn’t they pick the men started businessess that put people to work. Had we remained a nation of farmers as Jefferson envisioned we wouldn’t be playing politics with how people make their living and how hard they work.

President Cleveland saw communist influences in the “labor movement” and justifiably so since the original name for Labor Day was to be International Workers’ Day >>> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labor_day

Maybe it’s good we just observe that day by roasting winnies on the grill at the beach? Best to ignore all that “workers of the world unite” baloney.

Like so many things, Unions were started for a very good reason and they were needed because big employers were ripping off employees and treating them like private property. Then along came Unions and things changed Unions made the big Employers change their ways and treat people right. And then Unions became to big and became worst than the big employers they were fighting and even worst they got into bed with trash like Obama and they started screwing over people even worst than employers and just when you thought it couldn’t get worst the Unions were taken over by CRIMINALS and then along came Obama the biggest crook yet, he replaced all the N L R B with Union Criminals so they could screw the workers even more.He is also letting criminal Unions force employer to give name addresses, phone numbers and E mail address so Union member can abuse and beat workers into joining their criminal unions he also wants no more secret vote for or against the Unions so Union Thugs like Hoffa can go after the workers. Look at the way the Head Union Thug introdruced the U S A’s head thug [Obama] and Obama grinning from ear to ear ignores what the head Union Criminal said, since he agrees with another criminal like him! We need to run all appointed Czars Muslims everyone Obama appointed to anything and for sure the high court and N L R B with Eric Holder, Pelosie, Reid, Rev. Wright, Nation of Islam, Sara Brady and all immoral people who don’t keep their sex habits [ no matter which they are] in their own bed room where it belongs, Oh and for sure all the gutless Joint chiefs of staff!
