The Healthy Obese? One Study Thinks So…

More than 129 million Americans are overweight. That’s 64.5 percent of the United States population and more than double the entire population of France.

More specifically, 40 million Americans are obese or seriously overweight. That’s double the entire population of Australia. Three million of them suffer from life-threatening obesity, otherwise known as morbid obesity. That’s 60 times the number of soldiers who died in Vietnam.

What’s more, according to former U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher, “overweight and obesity may soon cause as much preventable disease and death as cigarette smoking.”

Obesity is a curable and preventable epidemic disease. Today’s fast food restaurants, processed foods and soft drinks, poor eating habits and lack of exercise have contributed to this abundance of body fat.

Generally speaking, when we get 10 percent above our normal weight we are considered obese. The government has determined what our ideal weight should be. Determining whether we are obese is done by determining our Body Mass Index (BMI). To find your BMI (and to see if you’re “government approved”) go to the website of the Center for Consumer Freedom, and type in your height and weight.

There are a number of different causes of obesity including genetics, constitution, age, diet, emotions, level of daily physical activity and lifestyle. Of these, genetics pose the problem in terms of how we develop. However, lifestyle plays the major role. How much we eat, when we eat, what we eat, how much we exercise and so on can all make us obese. But can one be obese and still remain healthy? A recent study suggests it’s possible.

At the annual Endocrine Society meeting held June 19, in San Diego, Dutch research was presented that weight is not as important as metabolic profile. The study, consisting of more than 1,300 obese participants, found that 90 of them did not have heart disease, diabetes or high blood pressure. Moreover, those same people showed no history of stroke and their cholesterol levels were within normal range without medication. Researchers followed up with the 90 metabolically healthy obese participants and found that only one of them developed cardiovascular disease.

While the Dutch study may offer solace to those who are overweight, I would like to contradict that notion. To begin, let’s discuss how one is determined to be obese. To do this we must return to the BMI calculation.

I, for one, have never thought it reliable. For example, athletes whose muscle density and size are not related to body fat offer “false” readings of being overweight. Additionally, many of the serious side effects of obesity, like heart disease and diabetes, are linked to belly fat. Thus, depending on where one holds his fat, he may not be at risk for those collateral illnesses.

With this in mind the Dutch study did not consider muscle density or fat location and missed the fact that obesity is unhealthy, period—regardless of the additional life-threatening diseases it may or may not cause. The elephant in the room, of course, for the Dutch metabolically healthy participants is that only 7 percent of the entire group of obese participants were considered so. That is way too small a number for anyone to get their hopes up.

The new obesity calculation being used is called the Weight to Height Ratio (WtHR). It takes fat location into consideration. The WtHR is calculated by dividing your waist size by your height. It also adjusts for men and women in its numbers. To learn more about WtHR, go here and here.

Being overweight is unhealthy. Not only can it cause high blood pressure, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, it also wreaks havoc on the bones and joints. Moreover, its psychological affects can be debilitating. The good news is that obesity is reversible and also preventable.

The answer, then, is to maintain an attitude of temperance when it comes to everything. Don’t engage in too many stressful events that can cause you to eat or drink in excess. Don’t eat too late at night. Be physically active enough every day to burn off what you put in.

In the end, what we have here is a new definition of obesity. Where we once associated this term with people who are “huge,” we now know that even those of us with a gut or who are overweight but “hold it well” are actually also considered obese. Thus, we must also have temperance when it comes to comments directed at others. And while we change our perceptions on this disease, let us drink plenty of water and avoid sweets and greasy foods in the process.

    while you wax eloquent about the shortfalls of this study it lures people into a false sense of security about being overweight. Do some research about BMI before you use terms like “government approved” The government has nothing to do with the definition of overweight and obese, just because you write on a conservative forum you have abandoned your hippocratic oath and pander to political beliefs.

        Bob Livinsgton, to people like ‘pish tosh’ I have to say pshaw, feh and balderdash. While I’m not sure what his problem is, he didn’t do much to enlighten us with his wisdom. If he’s interested in how the government creates, maintains and worsens weight problems, he can contact the Ludwig von Mises Institute and get the complete, sordid history of Uncle Scam’s incestuous relationship with food manufacturers who lace our food supply with corn-derived sweeteners [73 pounds per person per year!].
        Assuming that ‘pish tosh’ isn’t a progressive ‘plant’ on your website, maybe he can find a way to add to his storehouse of knowledge with some FACTS.
        From what I’ve seen so far from ‘pish tosh,’ a mere five minutes of research from any reputable conservative information source will increase his ‘knowledge ‘by a factor of at least 10.

      What seriously concerns me is the way the ‘government’ is wrestling control of every aspect of our lives away from us all the the name of what is ‘good’ for us. It’s none of their business how much I weigh or what I eat. They can’t even come up with a balanced budget, so how are they going to know what is best for us cradle to grave?

          Tg7357, you do have a point. I’m still waiting for America’s MDs to grow spines and brains and then slam dunk food and soda makers for voluntarily contributing to America’s obesity pandemic [the money is sOOOOO GOOD and EASY!].
          WHY do those people go to medical school if they don’t read the new, scientific literature? No, I don’t mean the crap that Big Pharma wants MDs to read. That bad habit starts in medical school, and is responsible for American MDs being too brainwashed (and too flush with EASY money to be able to THINK).
          Take the crap OUT of food and pop, and most of America’s obesity problem will vanish. While you’re at it, imprison the chemical Frankensteins who make the crap that winds up in America’s food supply.

            Unfortunately, the big pharmacutical companies are getting a stranglehold not only on the patients, but the doctors as well. Like I said in an earlier post: my doctor isn’t a physician any more, she a pill pusher. She can give me a pill for everything, and its a fight between us every time I go see her to AVOID taking more drugs. When my poor mother died, she was taking 15 different types of drugs!!! I told myself then that exercise, diet, cutting back, cutting down and being smarter about LIVING CHOICES was going to be my Golden Rule. I may not measure up the the Feds idea of healthy weight or diet, but I FEEL GOOD, I don’t take more than 1 medication, and I don’t depend of the government to take care of me and never will!!!

        I agree. What I eat and drink is no one’s business but my own. I’m not going to let some lying, America-hating, racist, Nazi scumbag who smokes and drinks tell me what I can put into my body.

        I find it interesting that the left, as an argument for supporting abortion, claims that women have the right to control there own bodies. But, people apparently don’t have a right to control our bodies when it comes to what we eat and drink.

        Being fat is not always a bad thing. Twenty-five years ago, when I barely weighed 150 pounds (I’m five-ten) I was diagnosed with cancer. My oncologist flat out told me that if I did not put on some weight the chemotherapy wouldn’t do me one bit of good. He gave me some pills that had the affect that the emptier my stomach got the queasier I felt. So, I was eating all the time and, in about a month, my weight shot up to almost 190 pounds. I got fat and I’m still around twenty-five years later. My weight is now down to just under 160 and on my job–I’m a security officer–I walk an average of about six miles a night. If I walk to work, which I often do, that’s another two miles. If I walk home, again, that’s another two miles. So, I walk an average of between six and ten miles a night, but I still have a lot of body fat. Oh, I also happen to be 61 years old.

          It’s good that you get so much walking in on a daily basis. That’s really good. However, if it is your wish that you consume whatever you want, I hope you realize it’s hypocritical for you to say that, but expect Medicare to foot the bill for your decisions. Consume whatever you like but also be prepared to pay the price.

          And as for abortion, I’m tired of reading about little kids being abused and killed by parents who probably really didn’t want to have the children in the first place, but were “guilted” by people who said abortion is murder. Well, so is driving your kids into a lake, or throwing them off a bridge, or beating them to death. Maybe YOU like reading stories about parents abusing/killing their kids, but I don’t. If they were aborted in the first place, we wouldn’t have to read about this horrors. And if you so wound up about abortion, why not adopt a few of these babies? Yeah, I know. You’re 61. It’s too much work.

Imagine the look on their faces when they learn the hard way that American MDs are trained to treat symptoms. They are NOT trained get to the heart of a problem and eliminate it.
        Americans owe it to themselves to stay as healthy as long as possible and NOT rely on advice from those who are closer to business types who have a license to “practice” medicine, instead of being true scientists and healers. Like it or not, some MDs are B A D for your health.

    This is the same ‘government ‘ that kept the Army telling me I was overweight for the 7 years I was in? It didn’t matter that I could run for 5 to 7 miles in August without stopping in 85 degree morning heat and not die of heat exhaustion. It didn’t matter that I could carry a radio, rifle, 2 water canteens, and my web gear all day and not collapse. It didn’t matter that I could ace a PT test. All they were interested in was that I was BELOW 141 lbs because thier little fat calipers decided I needed to be. The government is staffed by idiots who are so out of touch with EVERYTHING in everyday life of the citizens it would be funny if it wasn’t snoballing our society into a trainwreck.

      My father was on the fat boy program in the Air Force. When I was in the Air Force, the restrictions helped me keep my weight down.

      There are hereditary tendencies in our family. I can carry alot more weight than the standards say. I had my forearm measured to raise my weight limit in the military.

      It is a very big problem in my family.

      My father died from complications of diabetes and congestive heart.

      Thank God the four of us kids do not have diabetes, but, my younger brother and my sister and myself fight obesity every day.

      I am not winning the battle right now…..other health problems keep me from wanting to exercise. Excuses….that is all I have….

        Obesity has been a problem in my family, too. Not because we overeat or eat the wrong foods, but because there are glandular problems on one side of the family tree. All the women in my family have thyroid issues. That wasn’t caused by our diet: its hereditary. Diabetes is also an issue: once again, not caused by diet but by heredity. We know this because not all of us have diabetes: some of us have no bloodsugar issues. Our family was poor back 3 or more generations, so they didn’t have access to excessive foods or rich, fatty fast food or soda, etc. Its just a herditary issue we all have to be on the look-out for.

    There was an article in either “Scientific American” or “Discover” magazine about 5 years ago. Using statistical analysis of several weight studies (if I’ve got my facts straight) it showed that being very obese is not good, but being only a bit overweight (beyond the government’s definition, however) was not dangerous. Interestingly enough, being underweight was dangerous.

    It was either this article, or one around the same time that showed the government standard would not fit the population – it was too generalized to fit the many body types – and used several well know celebrities who were considered “obese” by government standards that were obviously wrong.

    I agree our diets are not good, and we have overweight and health issues as a result – but I very strongly disagree with the government being involved with any of this – don’t see where they have a constitutional right to spend money on it, nor do I see how their involvement can result in anything other than more liberties being lost.

    I am sick and tired of all the cowardly double talk regarding obesity. The reason people are fat, and the only reason they are fat, is because they eat too much. We have to stop worrying about fat people’s feelings and tell the truth. The greatest danger in obesity is, of course, diabetes. First you go blind, then they cut off your legs and then you die. The problem is this process takes 20 years and we pay the bill. So, stop coddling them and look under the car seat and their beds and confiscate the potato chips and twinkies.

      You seem to have either ignored or forgotten that there are some people in our society who cannot help but be overweight. They have a legitimate medical problems that prevents them from exercising, or they have glandular or DNA issues that MAKES them overweight. You can’t tar the entire overweight population with the ‘you eat Twinkies’ tarbrush. And a lot of overweight people’s health insurance doesn’t cover special therapy (gene, glandular, etc) treatments to get them back on track for slimmer bodies. Every person is different, each case is different, and I’m a firm believer that 99% of overweight people don’t WANT to be that way, but in lots of cases it cannot be helped.

      Tony, it is obvious you do not have a weight problem. I have battled this throughout my life and will probably continue until I leave this world. I do not eat junk food, drink surgared drinks (plain water is my favorite) and I do not overeat. Due to some heraditary problems which I cannot control I can not tolerate sodium which is one of the biggest causes for my weight problem. If I do eat out for a lunch special I always have enough leftovers for 2 meals. I do walk regularly and also use my bike a lot. It is unfair to group everyone with a weight problem together. I have worked my whole life and I personally resent the interference of the government in my life concerning my weight issue. You need to think before you judge others. I have never depended on the government to take care of me because I believe that we need to provide for ourselves. I too resent the government handouts for those who choose not to work. I have worked since I was 14 years old when I was orphaned. Even when my late husband was drafted during the vietnam area and we were told we qualifited for food stamps and federal aid, we did not do so.

      I’m diabetic from exposure to defoliants. I’ve got four pins in my lower back that keep me from exercizing like I should, but I’m only 10 pounds over weight. Does your simple set of rules fit me as well?

    Agree on the BMI to be inaccurate. Right now, I am “obese” and know it. I could afford to lose about 40 pounds. But, if I try to get to what is considered “normal” for me, I am almost rail thin w/ my hip bones sticking out. It also means I almost starve myself to get to and keep a “normal” weight.

      To read the title to this article one would be led to believe that overweight (fat) people work out regularly and get plenty of exercise. The fact of the matter is that exercising takes MORE discipline than dieting, so it’s not likely to happen with people who do not have the discipline to monitor what they eat. We all pay for obesity, even those of us who diet and exercise. Can we at least be honest about this?

        You suffer from the same problem that most people suffer from and that’s that you are grossly mistaken about “fat people”, and by “fat people” I mean fat according to the stupid charts put out by the government. First of all, there is no “catch all” when it comes to “fat people”. I have been labeled “fat” since I was very young. Forget the fact that I could run a marathon, swim 20 miles (YES, SWIM 20 MILES), and would go out bicycling in the early evening and not return until well after the sun came up the next morning. Yes, I did ALL of this and was still considered “fat”. Right now I do indeed have too much weight on, HOWEVER, I still work out (Martial arts 2-3x/week AND swim 2x-3x/week). I have just bought a bowflex to help me when my schedule just doesn’t give me time to get to the gym, but MOST PEOPLE can’t afford to do things like that.

        And I can tell you one thing, as “fat” as I am, I can GUARANTEE you that I could kick your a** all over the street.

        I want to know HOW they came up with these “ideal weight” tables because they are simply not realistic. And now there’s a “height to weight ratio”. That is simply LUDICROUS. People of the same height can vary by GREAT AMOUNTS. I have seen very skinny runners who are “in shape”, and I have seen MUCH MUCH heavier weight lifters or body builders (that do NOT take steroids or other drugs) that have a complete workout regime who weigh more than 1.5x as much. Is one healthier than the other? You sure as hell can NOT tell that from a simple height to weight chart.

        This simplistic approach is taken so the dingbats in the medical offices have an easy method to categorize people. Doctors today are virtual IDIOTS compared to what they were 20 and 30 years ago, back when doctors actually had to THINK about their patients and not just prescribe them some pill. I know about this FIRST hand because I have allergies to certain foods. My pediatrician worked with me when I was just a child but he found a medication that would relieve my allergy symptoms IMMEDIATELY. Today, I have mentioned this to some doctors today and their only response was that “that could NEVER have happened”. I hate to tell them, but I LIVED THROUGH IT and I have PERSONAL knowledge. You see, the doctors today don’t THINK, they merely REGURGITATE and THAT is the sad state of affairs of today’s medical profession.

      You must keep in mind that its a “general scale: thus no two people are going to be 100% alike.

      Example two persons the same height my have differant bone structure. One may have small bones and medium joints.
      The next may have large bones and small joints, so even at the same weight they would look totaly differant in body configuration as in BMI. As well bone weight also figures in again not all bones have the same weight values based on the above configurations. then toss in body types, A being an Apple, or B, being a Pear, this transends both sex’s.

      I am not trying to confuse anyone; I am just adding in that no two are going to be 100% alike, also that each case should be looked at for its own values. Blogs and articles are written to inform you of issues, so they are written on a very broad base line.
      Don’t get angry with the Doc, he is trying to help you all not make you mad.

      BMI will always be differant for each person based on a number of physical issues. So again its a general statment.

      Sue, if you’re not “huge” and you have a wiping problem, then please use America’s greatest resources [the White House and Congress], and tell them that you could use their world-class expertise with a delicate matter.
      When Obama [Mr. Fix It] isn’t busy solving open border problems and Afghanistan, Big Joe will be more than happy to prove that he knows what he’s doing. And, if they can’t help, they can always rely on Congress, starting with Nancy Pelosi, to jump in and save the day.
      In fact, the next time I have a bout with the runs,
      I’ll make phone calls and send emails to Washington, because I know my friends there will be happy to concern themselves with my posterior and my wiping habits. It’s so ‘nice’ to have friends, eh? Remember, it pays to deal with “experts” who know all about every topic under the sun.

    I’m like Pat, and agree with AnhydrousBob. Whenever I see a doctor, he says, “Wow! The scales say you’re overweight, but you sure carry it well because you don’t look it.” I do have a spare tire that I hate, but at 55 years old, my blood pressure is spot-on normal, blood sugar is perfect, lipid profile is enviable, and I’m physically strong because I build muscle easily. I don’t take or need any medications for any conditions. But my according to the BMI, I’m obese and horribly unhealthy. Never mind that I know plenty of “skinny” people who are medical nightmares (or perhaps “dreams” for their doctors) and their BMIs would indicate they’re “healthy.” Far from it! Therefore, the BMI is a rough tool at best, because it doesn’t take body type — or anything else — into account, but unfortunately insurance companies use it to determine your premiums.

      A little off the subject, but in it’s own way, I hate doctors and I’m an RN. My cholesterol is a bit high, but my ratio’s are excellent. The dr. wanted to put me on Lipitor (and/or other type drugs) and I refused. Those drugs are extremely !!! hard on the body, especially the liver. I had a heart scan to determine how much “plaque” I had around my coronary arteries, and I had NONE! and was a low risk for heart disease. If I hadn’t insisted on taking responsibility for my own health, I would be on drugs I don’t need and destroying my body, all in the name of “it’s best for you.”

        I agree with you about doctors. I’ve had the same one for nearly ten years, and she’s gone from being a physician to a pill pusher. She can give me a pill for everything. I avoid her. If it was up to her I’d be taking Zoloff, Lipitor, Crestor, Synthroid, and any other kind of ‘oid’ and ‘or’ drug on the market. She gave my husband statins and I made him stop taking them because they were actually causing him physical pain, but she told him ‘he’d get used to it’.

    Ok, so 90 out of 1300 obese people were considered “healthy.” That’s a pathetic sub 7%. Those statistics say that 93% of obese people are going to die young from some disease that tax payers will undoubtedly have to pay for in the attempt to keep them alive. I’m not a gambling man, but those statistics say to me: BE HEALTHY. I will however say that the BMI is bogus as it has nothing to do with muscle mass….I happen to be 5’9″, 245 lbs with 9% bodyfat…so I’m obese in the eyes of the Communist Government, but I have a 6 pack and compete in bodybuilding shows. And I wasn’t blessed with good “genetics” by ANY means. I have to work extremely hard in the gym and on my diet to achieve those results. If I choose to be lazy, I become fat within 6 months.

    I have an idea. Instead of the epidemic of pure laziness in America, get off the couch, put the potato chips down, and do something productive. While you’re at it, get a shower, fat people stink…probably because they sweat so much from simply watching TV. Maybe there wouldn’t be 40 million people who depend on food stamps and government handouts to survive if fat people weren’t so lazy, and Americans weren’t so lazy in general, regardless of body weight. That’s the real problem here, laziness. It’s disgusting. And yes, if you’re fat, you should be required to purchase two airline tickets. I’m so sick of all the politically correct garbage.

      You’ve been drinking too much of the government koolaid. The government is right now fighting Arizona on a “profiling” issue…Oh, I forgot, this is the same kind of “profiling” that the government does to Americans ALL THE TIME!

    Instead of castigating people for being overweight, why not mind our own business? There can be people who are obese who are healthy. There are thin, beautiful people who are dangerously thin and at a higher risk of death than fat people. Take it on an individual basis and leave these studies as the general trends they are.

    BMI is an interesting number, waist to height is an interesting number. We are obsessed with measuring and these numbers can only give us a small idea of chance of illness and early death.

    My BMI is normal but I really should lose 10 pounds. Athletes can have a BMI that would suggest they are overweight, but one look tells you this is false. All these weird numbers are just a substitute for LOOKING at a patient and actually talking to them!

    Watch for numbers and statistics to increase as docs have less and less time and interest in actually interacting with patients and instead rely on reports and statistics done by someone else. That nurse on the other end of the call to your insurance company will make her loopy decisions based on such research and never see you.

    20 years ago I had sepsis and DIC. One day I was fine and the next day I was in a coma. The doctors told me that if I hadn’t been overweight that I would not have survived. Unfortunately, I did loose a leg, but I am still fat and happy without diabetes, high colesterol, heart disease, etc. I am currently 65 and glad that Obamacare wasn’t in effect 20 years ago, as they would not have treated me the way they did.

      Bassfish – what you said is SOOOO true. If we weren’t living in a “modern” world, the “fat” people would be the ones that are envied. Why? Because THEY can survive a food shortage for MUCH longer than some skinny runt. In fact, over THOUSANDS of years, our bodies have been developing this genetically. Those of us who can bulk up, put on fat and weight would be rewarded by passing off our genes to the next generation while the skinny pukes would die off due to starvation.

      So, in THAT society, all the people telling us that we should lose weight today would now be dead. And, what do you think is going to happen when WWIII comes along and there are great food shortages everywhere? That’s right – it will be the FAT people who can go longer without food, will survive. Sure, they will then lose weight, but long after the skinny runts have croaked, we’ll be walking around and will be working on rebuilding society.

      And if you think WWIII isn’t coming, just take a good look at what Obuma Hussein is doing to this country.

        Bob Plugh, thanks for the laughs, and all of history has proven that you’re absolutely correct. Food shortages ARE coming, either real or artificially created to control us, and the skinny runts are going down! I previously stated on this forum that I hated my spare tire; now I’m starting to appreciate it as “famine insurance!” WWIII is closer than most people think.

    So, if the Feds tell us we all have to be a certain bodyweight,fat ratio and stand on one foot and scratch our behinds when they say so, does that mean they will furnish each of us a personal trainer like Barky and Shelly have to make it so? Free under Obamacare, of course?

    Personally, an MD would be the LAST person I would consult for health or nutritional issues. They are “expert” at how they’ve been indoctrinated. “One symptom per visit”, as if we are a collection of independent parts bearing no relevance to one another when, in fact, multiple symptoms are important clues. But they have no interest in causes or cures, just pushing pharmaceuticals for symptoms.

    The American diet has been deliberately engineered to be devoid of nutrition and heavy on the empty carbs and calories. Too many empty carbs is a big cause of both overweight and disease. Along with additives like MSG and high fructose corn syrup, both known to cause weight gain, a person could eat normally and still be heavy.

    Then there is the issue of pharmaceuticals causing weight gain. Some where around half of America is on mood-altering meds, which also cause weight gain. My daughter, who developed mental illness because of long-standing Lyme disease affecting her brain, became obese because of being put on psych meds. It took years and a ton of money to discover why she became ill, and prior to the meds she was underweight for the first 30 years of her life. The meds caused her body to change both size and shape. If doctors had bothered to look for the cause and treat the Lyme, instead of drugging her into a zombie, she’d have a meaningful life today.

    Now, I can see the signs of “pharmaceutical obesity” in an overweight person. It’s criminal. And it’s very hard to get off these drugs. These drugs cause people to die at an early age of heart and liver disease, and when I discussed this with ther doctor, he said it was a “risk/benefit” issue.

    Knowing what I know now, I’d do things much differently.

      kate8, I am so sorry about what you and your daughter have been through. What a horrible nightmare. Four years ago, I had prostate cancer AND Lyme Disease. Doctors wanted to cut, burn, and poison me for the cancer, and use completely ineffective long-term antibiotics to treat the Lyme. It was way too late for antibiotics to be effective. The Lyme Disease was the greater problem for me because my brain was so foggy that I couldn’t think straight at work, I had soaking night sweats, and my joints ached.

      Doctors had no other solutions for the Lyme Disease, so I didn’t know what to do about it, but I rejected the doctor-recommended surgery, poisons, and radiation for the cancer. Instead, I opted to go to Germany in the hope of getting CURED of cancer — and without any side effects. Klinik St. Georg in Bad Aibling, Bavaria, is the place to go. While there, I casually mentioned to the founder and head oncologist, Dr. Friederich Douwes, that I also had intractable Lyme Disease that was giving me a lot of trouble. He said, “Ach, Lyme Disease ist a hobby of mine. Ve can take care of that!” I was then scheduled for a whole-body hyperthermia treatment. After one treatment, it was GONE!

      After my two-week stay in Germany, I returned to the states and went back to work immediately. I hadn’t felt so good in years! You may be wondering how much it cost to be cured of cancer as well as Lyme DIsease. The total price was the same as a new Honda Civic at the time — around $20,000. Even better, my company’s insurance reimbursed me for the whole tab. I had asked Dr. Douwes how much for just the Lyme Disease cure, and he said, “About 1,500 Euros.” It’s an incredible bargain that I’d recommend to anyone.

      There’s more to this story, including the reasons why we’ll never see this technology in the U.S., but my message is simply this: DON’T let others dictate your health care decisions. Educate yourself about your condition and don’t be afraid to look outside of this country for solutions.

        TDA, GOOD FOR YOU! According to the geniuses at the AMA/FDA/Big Pharma cabal, what you had done is medically IMPOSSIBLE. So much for American medicine.
        I’ve heard about these clinics. What matters is that you got RESULTS.
        Once in a while I do harp about what passes for “science” in American medicine. The thing is, folks, if help exists and the AMA/FDA/Big Pharma crowd tells you otherwise, then CONSIDER THE SOURCE of that info. IT’S Y O U R HEALTH. Either you’re dealing with true experts, or you’re dealing with OVERPAID QUACKS.

    My blood pressure is 110 over 70, and my waist measurement
    is 34″
    By government standards, I am obese!!
    Most people just call me skinny though.

    We have a really good family doctor – when I saw the stupid “one-line-fits-all” BMI on her wall I said “What happened to the Greeks?”
    She laughed.
    Please note the Ancient Greeks observed the obvious that people fall into three physical categories in ancient Greek = Endomorphs, Mesomorphs and Ectomorphs.
    Stocky, slim and medium.
    There is no way a stocky person 5-7 high will weigh the same as a slim person of the same height – Ever!

    Just another attempt by the government for more outright CONTROL over the population. correct me if I’m wrong, but by their Oath of Office *under the Constitution*, don’t THEY need MY approval (via my Representatives & Senators) to do anything that is not specifically included in the US Constitution?

    Excuuuuuse me! I don’t need THEIR approval of my eating habits unless I actually apply for a government job that would require BMI testing, such as the military…I’ve already “been there, done that” & served my term.

    The Government has been wrong for trying to regulate what we all eat, going all the way back to the 60s, when they began changing the food pyramid and telling us what we should eat. It is their fault for the Obesity and diseases that has followed from their unscientific Pyramid guidelines. Americans have gotten fatter and sicker with Diabetes and Heart disease and even Some Cancers since they started promoting what they thought was a more healthy life style without true Scientific evidence to back it up. A good read for the truth on this matter is, “Good Calories. Bad Calories” by Gary Taubes. If you can’t find a new copy at it’s worth locating a used copy. It is quite an eye opener, and it will take “All the people of the United States” to stand up and say NO MORE to the Government and Medical establishment along with Universities who teach their false ideas. It’s time to stand up and regain our freedom and health and for the Government to shut-up and stop taking control of everything.

    why have they changed the BMI index? I checked it out 2yrs ago and it said I was slightly overweight at 5,5 and 158pds, I checked it again about 5mths ago and am still at the same weight as before but this time it said I was obese, could it be they lowered the standard so they can now say were all obese?

    A large percentage of people are told they are too fat and in danger of early death.
    The average age of the population is rising and there are doubts about funding our old age.
    It does not add up.

    I’m not fat, I’m just to short for my weight. According to the gov. I need to be 9ft 10in. tall. The cardiologist diet, if it tastes good spit it out.

    The real issue here is not how food has made America obese or how the soda companies have turned us into sedentary blimps. Nobody is responsible for how otherwise healthy human beings look and feel than ourselves. My Dad always lived by the standard that “everything in moderation is the best way to live” He was never sick a day in his life, and ate what he wanted, and lived life to the fullest. Now, we obsess and finger point when we are too big, and too miserable because of it. Leave the fast food places, and soda pop companies alone. I love cotton candy, elephant ears, Coca Cola, and funnel cakes! There has to be something still to take unabashed pleasure in, in this politically correct society where no individual can be responsible for any shortcomings of their own, and everyone is so ready to destroy the quickly dissipating joys we have left. Lets go to the fair!

    Dr. Wiley, thank you for an interesting article, pointing out other ways to consider a healthy weight for
    each individual’s body. Also, the reminders are good on how to maintain a healthy weight. for people
    who think they feel better when they are not carrying too much weight. If some
    people are convinced their weight is okay, so be it, maybe it is okay for them.
    (And to those of you who seem to have a severe overreaction to any recognition that some people really
    ARE fat, have you had too much sugar today? Calm down!

    Not one person said the real reason for the “new” BMI. Money, the Government is a bit short and wants to tax us more. If we are short of cash we cut back, the government on the other hand just ups taxes and complains when the money does not flow in. All I can say is good luck in Nov guys. BTW I am missing Carter.
