The Hand of God

February 11, 2010 by

It’s amazing the lengths to which some will go in an effort to remove God from public discourse.

Activist liberal judges have tied themselves into knots in order to remove Christianity from public schools and nativity scenes from public property. Individuals have sued government to have the words, “In God We Trust” removed from coinage and to ban prayer, the 10 Commandments, Christmas parties and religious demonstrations from public schools.

And many of the comment strings that follow articles posted on Personal Liberty Digest seem to eventually devolve, at some point, into commenters debating religion and government—even when the original article is on another subject entirely. Inevitably one or more of the posters makes the false claim that the Founding Fathers were primarily somewhere between agnostic (the existence of God is unknown or unknowable) or practiced deism (denying the interference of the Creator with the laws of the universe).

Nothing could be further from the truth. Depending on exactly who you consider to be the Founding Fathers—signers of the Declaration of Independence, signers of the Articles of Confederation, signers of the Constitution, delegates to the Constitutional Convention or all of the above—their religious affiliations were as follows: about 54 percent Epicopalian/Anglican, about 18 percent Presbyterian, about 16 percent Congregationalist and the rest either Quaker, Dutch/German Reformed, Lutheran, Catholic, Huguenot, Unitarian, Methodist or Calvinist.

The First Amendment to the Constitution is very clear, and the Constitution would not have been ratified without the promise of the passage of a Bill of Rights. It says, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…” While the Founders wanted to make sure that America didn’t become like England with a State Church, they also understood that there was a need for men to keep God in their lives.

Unfortunately, activist judges and Supreme Court Justices have either misunderstood that or deliberately sought to ignore it. As a result, courts have interpreted all manner of government bodies to be Congress. They’ve also placed emphasis on the first part of what has been termed the Establishment Clause while de-emphasizing the second.

The Founders would have objected to this interpretation as much as they would one that allowed Congress to pick a denomination and name it the State religion. The proof of this can be found in their own words.

“It is the duty of all men in society, publicly, and at stated seasons, to worship the SUPREME BEING, the great Creator and Preserver of the universe. And no subject shall be hurt, molested, or restrained, in his person, liberty, or estate, for worshipping God in the manner most agreeable to the dictates of his own conscience; or for his religious profession or sentiments; provided he doth not disturb the public peace, or obstruct others in their religious worship.” John Adams, Thoughts on Government, 1776.

“The liberty enjoyed by the people of these states of worshiping Almighty God agreeably to their conscience, is not only among the choicest of their blessings, but also of their rights.” George Washington, to the Annual meeting of Quakers, September 1789.

“In the supposed state of nature, all men are equally bound by the laws of nature, or to speak more properly, the laws of the Creator.” Samuel Adams, letter to the Legislature of Massachusetts, Jan. 17, 1794.

“All of us who were engaged in the struggle must have observed frequent instances of superintending providence in our favor. To that kind providence we owe this happy opportunity of consulting in peace on the means of establishing our future national felicity. And have we now forgotten that powerful friend? Or do we imagine that we no longer need his assistance? I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth—that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the Ground without his Notice, is it probable that an Empire can rise without his Aid?” Benjamin Franklin, To Colleagues at the Constitutional Convention.

“Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath?" Thomas Jefferson: Notes on Virgina, 1782.

While many will claim that Franklin and Jefferson were deists, their writings indicate that they, like the rest of the Founding Fathers, believed God actually had a hand in affairs of men.

That’s something we need to remember as well. If we forget that, we are truly doomed as a nation.

There is an easy solution to the banning of prayer in public schools: privatize the schools! All of them, including the colleges and universities. Those that deliver the goods will prosper, those that don’t will fail.
Similar solution to “In God We Trust” on the currency. Remove the government-enforced monopoly on currency. (We should not call it money because it currently is a pure figment of the federal government’s decree, and the willing cooperation of the people.)

The one that you and all like minded people that make those type of comments belong to be put back in! What’s wrong with you? Our nation has been blessed because we humbled our hearts and openly worshiped God. Do you realize that in 230 years that God raised us up as the super power? He did this because we are a nation that cares about others and will fight to the death when others are attached. We have done more for other count
ries than the rest put together. To whom much is given much will be required. Our requirement is to continue to love and pray for our enemies. There have been many, probably not unlike yourself, who thought they could do all this without God. Not so smart bud! As soon as we started taking God out of our schools, out of our courts, out of our lives, we have been going downhill. So think twice before making an insensitive comment like that in the further. Instead, get on your knees and beg God to come back.

Our forefathers would be stunned and dismayed as to what has happened to our great country. How sad that the minority has become the rulers. We can still turn this around at election time. We need to revive our standards and morals. We need to come back to God!

you can thank satan for these fine works. most peolple denie his existance .that’s why he is so successful. but the time is coming very soon now ,they will wish they payed attention to what the bible says. haiti is a good prelude to the great tribulation that the bible talks about in revelation. everyone is missing the big big piture because satan has created so many road blocks for them

    • kodster5

Has anyone considered these confining blizzards that the eastern seaboard has suffered in these last few days, along with another on its way, of being of Divine interference? Look at how our government has been shut down (nanny state doesn’t exist, not even FEMA is open), the food is not available (WSJ front page photo showing how the stores have been deplenished to just a few lemons in the produce department, from people panicking from being homebound, in yesterday’s issue), transportation system shut down (so delivery systems can’t replenish the stores, people can’t get around, unless on their own two feet, etc.). Other countries’ primary government centers are suffering from the same conditions (London, etc.).

In my opinion, I feel that the Lord is giving us a taste of what it’s going to be like, trying to lean on what man (the state) to provide for us. He’s showing us the way. Lean on Him, not man.

      • juswonderin

Homeboy & Kodster5:I think that one day; probably sooner than we know, we will have to have some type of instrument that will tell if we have the mark of 666 on our hand or foreheads in order to buy or sell anything! Consider the “mark of the beast” in Revelation of the Bible. More & more our gov’t is using technology to infringe, interrupt, & FORCE things on us that is UNCONSTITUTIONAL, & getting away with it because of the Czars being APPOINTED by the gov’t & the judicial system that is being raided by the One World Gov’t/Order! So our recently elected Congressmen/women are doing what the ones that lost thier seats in congress so what now?? This has been in the works from a long, long time ago & is quickly surrendering our rights, our laws, our families, & our beloved Constitution & the survival of our country to remain a sovereigen nation. Thus Bilderberg Group is pushing all of this along with the Trilateral Commission, the World Bank,Federal Reserve, George Soros, Michael Moore types! We can see it in our “new laws” which are being restrictive to all who are conservitives, Christians, Education, or religious. If we do not comply there are “militias” being formed right now to kill or injure Americans, just like in the countries that our gov’t has & troops are trying to “defend” the rioters. We will be apprended & locked up for “crimes” of terrorism. That’s just my humble opinion.

Amen. When we pray God Help Us, he says why, you took me out of the schools, out of the courthouse, want to take me off the money, out of the family, and you want me to help you, I don’t think so. You reap what you sow.

    • L, USA

Remember this hope Sally; “If My People, who are called by MY NAME, shall humble themselves and pray; then, I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sins, and I will heal their land”. God Bless America.

I received this request in an email from an aquaintance. Feel free to pass the thought along if you wish.

“Every evening at 9:00 pm Eastern Time (8:00 pm Central; 7:00 pm Mountain; 6:00 pm Pacific),

stop whatever you are doing and spend one minute praying for the safety of the United States, our troops, our citizens, and for a return to a Godly nation.”

    • L, USA

I just scrolled by your message at 9:00 PM ET and prayed that minute. That is another divine touch from The Creator, perfect!

    • juswonderin

I’ll do that too & will pray right now!! God & God alone can destroy the “god of this world’s” evil plans & return to us the country that He provides for us …IN GOD WE TRUST!!” God said, IF MY PEOPLE, will pray. So those of you that do not trust in God Almighty will fend for themselves & will be blinded by their own choice of how they want to live. Me, I’m putting my trust in the God of the Bible. That’s the ONLY SAFE choice, besides He has put up with a ton & more with all the lawlessness, & depravity for so long … but my desire is to follow His lead & worship Him & Him alone. So what if I choose to do so? You go your way & I’ll stick with the Lord’s way!!
No one in America today is being persecuted merely for being a Christian you’re wrong Mr.Berger!

“Myslef,I’m a non-observant secular Jew.I don’t want to impose my beliefs on other people, and I don’t want people imposing their on me”

We ALL have choices to make & I don’t want to “dictate” to anyone that is not a believer of the Bible, just don’t blame God for what your choices may bring to you.

  • Dan2

    Great article!!!
For the “athiests” who say there is no God. You really don’t know if I (Dan2) exist or not, except for this conversation in your head right now and this comment. The samething happens with God, you don’t know everything. You don’t know how many hairs are on my head or even if I have any hair. So you don’t know everything!
You are missing out on the best part of this life, by not allowing Jesus Christ into your heart.

  • Truth-Seeker

Yes, the founders believed in God the Creator, but they were very careful to make clear that the U.S.A. was not founded on the Christian religion and that there should be no state religion. George washington said: “The Government of the U. S. of A. is in no sense founded on the Christian religion. The United States is not a Christian nation any more than it is a Jewish or a Mohammedan nation.” And James Madison said this when he was arguing for the separation of church and state: “During almost 15 centuries has the legal establishment of Christianity been on trial. What has been its fruits? More or less, in all places, pride and indolence in the clergy: ignorance and servility in the laity; in both, superstition, bigotry, and persecution.”
And Jefferson said: “History, I believe, furnishes no example of a priest-ridden people maintaining a free civil government.”

Without a Creator, the Universe would not exist–so the Creator certainly exists–but that does not mean he is necessarily the same as the Christian God. So the founders believed in God the Creator and that he should be honored, but that in a free country every person had a right to view that Creator as he saw fit and that the government should not ally itself with Christianity or any other religion. After all, they had just come from Europe where Christianity had ruled as the state religion for 1500 years–see Madison’s quote above for how that turned out.

    • Kenneth

Dear Truth Seeker, Yes it was the Truth the Founding Fathers said about the Separation of Church and State they did not want a State Church. Why hasn’t this Truth been given to the Supreme Court Judges who have said it means anything and everything in closing down what the Fathers practiced in their personal and public lives.

    • L, USA

No. Your quotes are untrue. Read the prayer book of George Washington. You will find that he prayed to Jesus Christ, who was his God. Also, The God of the Bible, is Jesus Christ, that made HIM the God in government. Notice that HE is still in the congressional opening prayers. It is plain to see. The God of Israel is the God of America.

      • http://lreddickturner@juno.com Linda Turner

        I agree!!!

      • Smilee

Just because in his personal life he believed in Christianity does not mean he wanted his personal beliefs be imposed on any by the Constitution in fact he was against that. His personal beliefs have no bearing on it. Billy Graham some years ago in an hour long interview with Sir David Frost said this was not a Christian Nation, was not founded as one and never has been one. Billy Graham has firmly said he is a Christian and has witnessed to that reality often but he has never tried to change the Constitution to reflect it, Christians were called to be Christ’s witness not to be his judge, jury or executioner nor were we called to enact laws to enforce the law of God by the law of man. Christ said give onto Ceaser what is Ceaser’s and unto God what is God’s. To not separate religion from the state would make it very difficult to accommodate the freedom of all religions or those whom believe in none from being free to worship as they see fit as long as they do not try to control any other religion or no religion on others that is what freedom of religion is. The state must stay neutral so as not to pit one religion against another. Actually religions do a pretty good job of that on their own. The founding fathers knew and understood this.

  • Raggs

I dont have an opinion I have the truth!
God is our father and our founders father!
The current government has no father, a bastard and an abomination to God!

    • Smilee

What a terrible thing to say about this child of God as we are all children of God

  • Steve

    To the Truth Seeker:
I would be interested in finding out where you got your quotes from. I would like to investigate a little farther on that to see if they were passed onto you in their orignial form and if they are accurate, or if they have been changed up from the original.
    Thanks.

  • Richard Pawley

Great Article but I would say to TRUTH SEEKER that the object of seeking the truth is to find it and as I wrote in a recent book, quoting Herbert Agar, “The truth that makes men free is for the most part the truth which men prefer not to hear.” Just as we shouldn’t judge our Progressive or Socialist ridden government and blame the founding fathers so we shouldn’t judge very fallible men (the Bible says ALL have fallen short) by some of it’s misguided followers over the years. Look to the founder or founders to see what counts. Those who desire a world collective government will succeed but for three and a half years if I interpret my Bible correctly but there are those who will sacrifice anything to bring it about. The truth is the only thing that can slow it down, keep it from happening in our generation. Read the classic PRISON TO PRAISE or GOD CALLING two books which have helped many millions find the truth of what Christianity is about, what counts and what doesn’t, and in less than nine months be sure to vote for those who understand the value of freedom that the founding fathers understood or else we will lose what we still have.

    • Richard

      To the “Truth Seeker”:

To possess the knowledge of the ‘truth’, one must seek and learn about the ‘truth’ giver who is the one in the same, “God the Creator” and God of the “Christian religion”.

Joh 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Joh 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Joh 1:17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
Joh 3:21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
Joh 4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
Joh 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

Col 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

      To the remaining “Repliers”:

2Ti 3:1 ¶ This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
      4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

As you know, there are many different interpretations of God. Even the Bible we all know is a subset of early Christian writings on God. That is, some books have been completely left out. And there are a load of other religions/interpretations of God. All followers of God, and not extremist dogma, live for the good of the earth and all its creatures.

Learn what America has and continues to forsake….Are you Biblically Correct or Politically Correct? Imagine if America’s Founders did not talk Religion & Politics? Will our generation leave the next generation a Christian Heritage or a pagan society?

“He is the best friend of American liberty who is most sincere and active in promoting true and undefiled religion and who sets Himself with the greatest firmness to bear down profanity and immorality of every kind…God grant that in America true religion and civil liberty may be inseparable and that the unjust attempts to destroy the one, may in the issue tend to the support and establishment of both.” John Witherspoon, Signer of the Declaration of Independence, Member of the Continental Congress, President of Princeton College and Pastor. Spoken in a sermon delivered May 17, 1776.

“Republics are created by the virtue, public spirit, and intelligence of the citizens. They fall, when the wise are banished from the public councils, because they dare to be honest, and the profligate are rewarded, because they flatter the people, in order to betray them.” Joseph Story

America is being permeated with “progressive political correctness” and relinquishing the Biblical moral virtue which permeated America in 1776. In order to restore the Republic as our Founders intended, requires the core Biblical foundation which was the motivating factor in how America’s Founders confronted EVERY issue, whether social, fiscal, local, national, and international.

Just as many claim the religion of Islam has been hijacked by radicals, so to has America’s Republic been hijacked by Democrats and RINOs by “fundamentally transforming the country” from individual responsibility, freedoms and liberty with a free market and majority rule, into a fascist state of mandates where government has become our nanny, with every government-run program a failure, yet still without ceasing in their quest for this “progressive liberal” utopia of Marxism where irresponsibility is rewarded by punishing the successful, otherwise known as “social justice.”

To restore the Republic as our Christian Founders intended requires reverting back from progressive political correctness to Biblical moral principles, virtue, and courage. In order to restore the “American Way of Life” for our descendants, American citizens, who are also citizens of the Kingdom of God, must begin to honor and obey their Lord’s call to become the Salt & Light they are called to be as their King’s ambassadors, by preaching not only John 3:16, but what Jesus admonished in the same breath through verse 21.The indicators of this revival will be America’s overall stance on “the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God.” (I.E. Abortion & Marriage)

“The Black Regiment” – Paul Jehle, Ed.D., senior pastor at New Testament Church, Plymouth MA, and nationally acclaimed historian, explains how the history of Massachusetts is firmly grounded in a Biblical worldview in this instructive, visual 5-min exhortation Pastors have traditionally led their congregations in the political arena. With God’s grace, standing on historical precedent and the Word of God, let pastors do so again! …In early America Election Days were considered holidays, with a parade of pastors followed by those running for office walked from the center of town to the church where a pastor would preach an “Election Sermon.” He would show them duties from the Word of God and the people how to discern the best candidate. That came from the pulpit. Pastors also applied the Scriptures to current events. This is why the British burned churches, knowing that it was the Pastor and his pulpit that provided the greatest resistance to tyranny. This is exactly what is needed to fight the tyranny of progressive political correctness which is diametrically opposed to the “civil” boundaries of “the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God” and the foundation of Biblical moral principles, virtue, and courage with which the America’s Founders confronted every issue, including fiscal, social, and the security and sovereignty of the Nation. (Note: Dr. Paul Jehle is also the Executive Director of The Plymouth Rock Foundation which seeks to preserve, rehearse and propagate the rich Christian heritage of the United States of America, beginning with the Pilgrims.)

The ONE and ONLY GOD said:
Ex 20:1-3 And God spake all these words, saying, I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Matt 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

If you are saying we need HINDUISM you are wrong because we are not to worship anything Satanic.

All this Hindu: ”ATMA SEH PARMATMA”. THE GREAT ENLIGHTENMENT
WE ALWAYS HEAR SANTS SAY ATMA SEH PARAMATMA WHAT DO THEY MEAN? THEY MEAN EXACTLY WHAT THEY SAY. WE CANNOT LIVE IN THE PRESENT BODY UNLESS PARAMATMA THE ONE THROUGH WHOSE KREEPA WE LIVE AS ATMA IN THIS PRESENT LIVING BODY SO WE KNOW PARAMATMA and PRAAN JYOTI OR JEEVAN JYOTI PRABHU, will not save.
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the LIFE: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. John 14:6
Christ said “I am the light of the world”. John 8:12
CHRIST did not say “LIFE IS THE LIGHT OF MEN”. That is a half quote of John and you left out the most important part, which is saying Christ is the LIFE.
I hope I am wrong in thinking you are mixing Hinduism and Christianity.

Okay,if we’re going to have prayer in school again, what kind of prayer should it be? Christian prayer,Jewish porayer,Muslim prayer,
Hindu or Buddhist prayer? How about Wiccan prayer?
And what about kids who are atheists or agnostics? Let’s face it; America is now a nation with millions of non-christians whether you like it or not. Should we expect all kids in school to pray one way?
Schools are places for teaching, not preaching ! If kids want to pray, they can do this all they want in church or at home,or silently to themselves in school. There are now more atheists in America than there were people at the time of America’s founding.
Can’t we all just keep our religious beliefs and practices,or lack of them,to ourselves?
I don’t want the government telling me or any one else how they should pray. And if I had kids,I wouldn’t want them to have to pray the Christian way, because I’m not a Christian myself.
No one in America today is being persecuted merely for being a Christian.Myslef,I’m a non-observant secular Jew.I don’t want to impose my beliefs on other people, and I don’t want people imposing their on me.

When I was growing up in the 50′s and 60′s I remember how wonderful it was we had total freedom and you never heard of kids bringing guns to school or shooting other kids. We were all raised to believe in God and good morals which our government had good morals then too. It even says in the bible when it comes close to the end of time people will pull away from God. There will be terrible things happening and it is starting to happen right now. I totally feel sorry for those that don’t believe in God. I remember every Sunday everyone in our neighborhood went to church and everyone helped each other out and there was a lot more trust then..It was a truly happy time.
