The Government Has Your Emails, All Of Them

December 5, 2012 by

The Government Has Your Emails, All Of Them

A National Security Administration whistle-blower said in a recent interview that the U.S. government collects massive troves of data about American citizens, which it could use against anyone it chooses.

Speaking with RT, William Binney, a former NSA mathematician and code breaker, said that the Federal government uses a powerful data collection tool to store the contents of virtually every email sent by anyone in the Nation.

“[T]he FBI has access to the data collected, which is basically the e-mails of virtually everybody in the country. And the FBI has access to it. All the congressional members are on the surveillance too, no one is excluded. They are all included. So, yes, this can happen to anyone. If they become a target for whatever reason — they are targeted by the government, the government can go in, or the FBI, or other agencies of the government, they can go into their database, pull all that data collected on them over the years, and we analyze it all. So, we have to actively analyze everything they’ve done for the last 10 years at least,” he said.

Binney said the government is collecting the information in bulk without any regard to whether the individuals whose information is being stored is subject to criminal investigation at this time or is considered a threat to national security. According to the former NSA agent, the data is collected with a powerful information technology device called Naris which is capable of collecting all information being sent over fiber optic cables in the United States. The information is then stored in vast data collection centers where it can be searched later by Federal agents.

This sort of vast data snooping by the Federal government was first brought to light when it was discovered that the NSA was working with AT&T to monitor customer phone and Internet activity via a secret office at the company’s headquarters. The discovery led to a lawsuit and much stonewalling by the Federal government.

Binney says government surveillance of data over fiber optic networks has increased since the first lawsuit was filed against AT&T for allowing Fed snoops to mine its data networks. He claims that under the Administration of Barack Obama the government has even had to build larger facilities to store all of the data it is collecting from Americans’ inboxes.

“They are doing more. He is supporting the building of the Buffdale facility, which is over two billion dollars they are spending on storage room for data. That means that they are collecting a lot more now and need more storage for it,” he said. “That facility by my calculations that I submitted to the court for the electronic frontiers foundation against NSA would hold on the order of 5 zettabytes of data. Just that current storage capacity is being advertised on the web that you can buy. And that’s not talking about what they have in the near future.”

That is why if you want privacy in emails you encrypt them.

    • Vigilant

No encryption system is unhackable, Vicki. From the Spy vs. Spy age of writing in invisible ink, every method of encryption has been cracked. Those which are not cracked today will be cracked tomorrow.

      • http://google David

Pull the big bad power switch a half dozen times to shake up the backup. As I write, they have flagged the message.

      • PhaTz

Ask yourselves. Do you really think that the NSA doesn’t already have access to quantum computers ? Of course they would never admit to spending over a Trillion Dollars on a project headed by the Late Dr Seymour Cray. And this array of quantum computers wouldn’t be underground in Falcon Colorado.. Would they ?

I am involved in a project to do stream processing. This is the manipulation of an enormous data sets that can hide information which cannot be decrypted by one server alone. New methodology for “Big Encryption, Big Decryption” has been developed for those who went past 128 Bit DES encryption to a few Petabytes. This number is so incredibly large no current system “topside” can crack it. The interesting thing that this enormous cache of data can be used over and over to encrypt many secrets. If anyone were to attempt to steal this information they would have to have a truckload (40 ft container) loaded with disc systems to steal it. I doesn’t do anybody any good to take it unless they have the processing power to decrypt. This leaves only one plausible answer and that is that they have Quantum computers for this task.

In other words, they would not have developed an non transportable encryption method if they didn’t have a machine from which to decrypt the huge mass of data.. You did,t hear this from me.. I don’t exist.. This message will self destruct in 15 seconds..

      • Vicki

        Vigilant says:
“No encryption system is unhackable, Vicki.”

No lock is unpick-able either but people still use them. Do you want to make it easy for government or not. Of course if only a few encrypt then government can focus on the few.

Another amusing thing to do is include trigger words/phrases in all your communications so as to keep them busy. This technique has been in use for years in the nets that came before the internet.

      • http://n/a IamYou

Every encryption system may be theoretically crackable given enough resources, but there are other very simple ways to “encrypt”, such as a scene from the Star Trek II movie “The Wrath of Khan” where captain Kirk and Spock surreptitiously disguised the content of their open transmission about the Genesis project by saying how “hours could seem like days”, and how they could not restore power for two days (meaning hours). Perhaps an effective cloaking method for email communication would be to disguise it as commercial spam. This assumes you have something important to transmit, in which case you might consider non-electronic means anyway. As others pointed out, setting up several email accounts to send illegal electronic snoopers on wild goose chases could also be quite entertaining. Numerous identities with conflicting messaging should confuse even any quantum computers. Perhaps we should all create accounts for our favorite leaders and influencers to associate desired intel on them. Consider utilizing anonymizer sites to obscure IP info.

    • Deerinwater

      And this is news?

Never write and put your name on anything that you would not want other people to see.

      Problem solved.

      • Jacob

It’s impossible to send an email or text without having your name or some form of identity attached. The real troublesome thing is what or who, does the government, or this administration, perceive to be a threat? According to Homeland Security Director Janet Napolitano, Christians were added to the list of possible terrorist suspects. I am a Christian, a real Christian who spends his time studying, writing, and sending articles written by other Christian authors that by use of scripture foretell and warn others what is happening now and what will soon proceed according to God’s prophetic Word. Prophetic warnings and events that have an accuracy rating of 100%! Does this make me a threat?

The Bible says yes; there is genuine persecution taking place against Christians all around the world as I write this; people who because of their faith in Jesus Christ are being beheaded, blown up, burned alive, tortured, and even crucified.

Here in America there is (and has been for some time now) a real war against God and Jesus. And even though the types of persecution already mentioned above have not reached those kinds of levels here right now — there is a good deal of bias, bigotry and mockery aimed at Christians and Christianity today. I can only foresee this type of hostility growing. Having the Homeland Security Director, as well as the presidents own negative attitude and comments about people (Christians) who cling to their Bibles and guns; only serves to assure me that greater persecution awaits believers here in America.

  • Vicki

The good news is most of that storage is junk mail :)

  • Motov

LOL maybe they will take up on those african million dollar offers I always seem to get.

    • Mikey

Maybe something good will come of this: Perhaps the Gov will get sick of all the spam and outlaw it!

    • http://yahoo Larry

Ha ha, they already took those offers, the ones in egypt as well

  • http://mozilla robert e. lee

oh geez;; see you guys in the reeducation FEMA camp soon;;;;;;I know the FBI has all mine;; along with General Petraeus’s as well;; oh well today is a GOOD DAY TO DIE…

    • eddie47d

Banks, credit bureaus,Corporations, police, etc have access to just about anything they want. Facebook messages are readily available to lots of people including potential bosses so are we surprised by all this. Some messages are out there for eternity including E-Mails. Imagine the secrets that old computers hold so will this be like finding Pharaohs treasures for someone ?

  • Warrior

Hmmm, I think the gubmint will figure out a way to “deliver” those e-mails and charge for it.

  • Steven Louton

What’s funny is that big [expletive deleted] is watching big brother and friends, as the CIA found out.
Can you imagine how the [expletive deleted] will hit the fan when people like nancy pelosi and other congressmen and senators find out their e-mail is being read and watched.

When it comes back to bite one of the powerful congressmen or senators in the ass, you can bet there will be some changes made. whether or not this will help the average American citizen. only time will tell.
But in the meantime this is poetic justice.

I just wonder what government agency is spying on the NSA,most likely one that no one is ever heard of or never will.

    • Kate8

Steven Louton – Don’t you suppose that is one big reason why our “representatives” are not representing us against this run-amok, communist administration?

They aren’t bucking the takeover because it would be hazardous to their health. They are looking out for themselves, and have thrown us to the wolves.

The ironic thing is, they’ll be the first to go when TSHTF. Weasels can’t be trusted…not even by their blackmailers.

  • http://mozilla robert e. lee

HAD A “DISQUS” blogger threaten me with sending my blog to the FBI last night;; guess he won’t have to since they already got it…..all I said was they should give the [racist slur removed] nothing in the budget talks except a chance to walk out of America….

    • Hedgehog

Nice post, but shouldn’t that have been ni666er? I wonder what would happen if everyone sent a copy of their emails to this data collection agency. Then they would have 2 copies. They’d need twice as much storage. Perhaps this would necessitate a construction boom and stimulate the economy.

    • eddie47d

Two racists posts in a row how sweet….. and predictable.

      • Mikey

Yeah, it’s too bad some conservatives make us all look bad. I can see where you liberals get the stereotype of conservatives being racist. Just remember Eddie, these fools don’t speak for the majority of conservatives.

      • norma carmell

Eddie — I have already been cut off by google and the FBI for getting too many foreign E-mails. I thought there was something wrong with my computor and had to phone google after two days of no internet. I’m 83 years old and a muslim spy. The government
(OBAMA) is nuts and you can bet on it. Now he is dicussing the fiscal cliff with Al Sharpton, another nut.

      • Hedgehog

Eddie your ignorance is showing. What I posted was not a racist slur. I was merely asking Robert E. Lee,if he really meant that Obama was the ANTICHRIST! From your idolatrous worship of O’dogma, I suspect you are one of Jehovah’s witless.Oh, and just to head you off at the pass, I’m not a Christian, I’m an Erisian. Look it up!

      • roger

bonehead. how’s “halfrican” sound?? not racist, just fact………

      • Nadzieja Batki

mikey, who said they were conservatives? You don’t believe that a Leftist would be so brazen and lie and pretend to be a conservative to cause trouble and that eddie47 would pipe up with rebuke, now would you?

      • eddie47d

Nadzieja might be one too considering how she comes to their defense. Then Hedgehog blindly denies what he said. I reckon Nadzieja and he are both working on their Blinders.LOL!

      • Mikey

Well, it’s certainly a possibility. Trolls do roam the internet, trying to make those they don’t agree with look bad.
I had to post something, I get really sick of liberals accusing me of being racist simply because I disapprove of the way our current administration is destroying our country. I couldn’t care less what color or religion he is, it’s his agenda that sucks!

    • Kate8

robert – The trolls have threatened me with that, too.

The fact is that the Leftist trolls on these conservative sites are here for only one reason: to ridicule, aggravate and provoke. They want to get us to say things which can be used against us at some point, and they are being paid to do it.

What’s sad is how easily some people sell their countrymen out for 30 pieces of silver. I guess when people start disappearing because of things they’ve said, the trolls can feel all smug and self-satisfied that they served their masters well.

But then, they’ll have their own special hell to deal with.

  • Paul Wells

Seriously, if this doesn’t give you the “willies”, about government overreach, then nothing can. I understand that if they are able to thwart even one terrorist plot by doing this, it would probably seem worth it. Then again, what is the likelihood that a terrorist plot would use plain vanilla email to coordinate? This ought to produce a fair amount of rage, but it appears sheeple are content to have their rights trampled!

    • Kate8

Paul Wells – The sad thing is that the only ‘terrorists’ they’re really after are those who stand up for freedom and our Constitution.

This is just another way for them to know who their opposition are.

Don’t you suppose that was the purpose of hooking us all up to this matrix to begin with? Because the control grid has always been the goal of the NWO.

  • dee

It makes me sick to my stomach to know that we have such an ignorant & corrupt government, what happened to our country being free

    • Larry K.

      what happened?? obama.

      • Vigilant

The Obama administration is simply the latest in a long line of administrations that have been doing this.

I recall on 9/11 saying that NSA computers were probably overloaded by all the mentions of buzzwords in telecons and e-mails. Even prior to that day, they were assiduously screening communications with software that would flag anything with those buzzwords.

Use the buzzwords on this website and you will show up on the radar of the FBI and NSA.

      • Kate8

Vigilant – Yes, and it’s easy to distort and misconstrue things people say in print, as you can’t possible get a full understanding of what’s behind it. We could make quite innocuous remarks and have them used against us insurrection, or to ‘prove’ a ‘mental illness’.

      • Deerinwater

Victim, victim, fear, victim, fear, fear , victim , victim, victim, victim, victim, fear, fear, fear!

There is no end to it! ~ Just behave and keep your words sweet enough that eating them won’t foul your stomach or burn your mouth.

      • Kate8

Deer – In other words, shut up and accept that we no longer have any rights, and that our Constitution is dead.

We’ll be all right as long as we accept being muzzled and don’t speak out.

What kind of person are you.

    • ken

Allowing the left to get out of hand, zero inforcement of immigration laws no matter where they are from, and many other failures kennedy’s Clinton’s carters Kerry’s pelosies fiendsteins shumners geitners Vietnam Nam etc etc

  • Steve E

These people who are involve in scanning our emails should be hung for treason.

    • Kate8

Steve E – I hear that there are people working on that.

  • Sgt. York

Hope they get my spam and the virus as well

  • Ses

Let them waste their time, mine are pretty boring…….like this one!

  • 45caliber

Not a surprise. This was passed during Clinton’s day as the “Privacy Improvement Act.”

  • George Segrest

    Ladies and Gentlemen,
It has come to my conclusion that our Federal Government is in need if a mass overhaul and re-organizing. They are walking all over our 1st admendment rights. This is against the law and needs to be stopped. We know as they do that its suppose to take a court order to pry into peoples private affairs.
    To President Obama,
You are a communist of the worse kind. You and your Administration should be removed from office immedately. Yes I said it and I will stand by it. How you managed to get your self re-elected to the office you did I still don’t know but, it is in my opinon that you should be removed from office NOW! If you don’t loke this thought, TUFF stuff. As far as I know we do still have the freedom to express our opinon. This is mine! Get OUT of my White House, go to China, they would love to have you I’m sure. And also, you can bet I’ll do evey thing I can to see that you are never reelcted for a third term. As Said get your A** out of My White House.

    • vj

Thank you for your comments. I totally agree.

  • Dave

We live in a police state……

    • Deerinwater

We live in a state of taking responsibility for what we say, do and THINK! That some do not approve is must unfortunate.

      • Mikey

Well there’s a new one…..A liberal telling conservatives to take personal responsibility for their actions. Will wonders never cease!

  • ken

I just finished a book titled “NSA” recommended by my father-n-law a former military intelligence person for almost 30 yrs.. Very inlightening book, you guys should read.

  • JimH

Let’s just write a load of really boring stuff and lull them to sleep.
They’re government workers anyway, they already are sleeping 7 0f the 8 hours.
We can finish boring them to sleep for the rest of their day.

    • Deerinwater

      I see you started already!

      • JimH

        Someone got the joke.
You need to quit posting such thoughtful stuff, it may bring you to “their” attention.

  • vj

If they want to know what I am thinking and saying, all they have to do is send me their email address and I will be most happy to put them on my buddie list. I would love to have a DIRECT line to the WH so they will know exactly what I think of this administration and its cronies. I have LOTS of ideas and suggestions for them !!! God knows, they need some help, since so far all this bunch in Washington has managed to do is screw up everything good, right and decent about America. Their idea of what America is, is much different from most Americans. The last election was a joke. So much fraud and illegal voting happened. Did he REALLY win — or did he steal the election??? I know what I think. This has to be the most incompetent and un-American, unpatriotic group of people America has been unfortunate to have at the helm. The last 4 years have been a disaster. Heaven help us weather the next four years. It will take years to clean up and undo the damage they are causing the American people. My suggestion to all of them is if they want things to be “fundamentally different” then they should move to the country of their choice and leave this one the way it was that made it the greatest country in the world !!!! I love America and our Constitution.

    • Al Neuman

      Couldn’t agree more…

  • Motov

They can have what my Junk box gets

  • Motov

OhBozo can claim he is african – american,…his daddy is kenyan,…mommy is american,…but for him to do so will expose the truth he is inelegible to sit in the WH

  • special3d

Nobody at nsa or fbi cares about your emails. You should be more concerned about the profiles that google keeps on you, or some random hacker dude trying to steal your id.

  • Dee

Big brother at work. This is the most corrupt administration that I’ve ever seen.

  • SilverHairedSaint

And now they are building television sets with the ability to see and hear whatever is going on in your homes. Allegedly this technology is being developed for commercial purposes; to track what programming one watches and observe reactions to what is happening: on the show; on the commercials; in conversations you are having; what you are doing; etc… This information will allegedly be for creating the ability for the stations to be able to send commercials on products that relate to what they have observed. With the moves the government has been taking to intrude into our guaranteed Constitutional freedoms; collecting our email, technology machines on trucks that can see through our houses to see and hear what is going on inside. They are placing drones in our skies that can supplement the satellites abilities to see and track anyone’s movements. George Orwell was on the right track when he wrote “1984″ he was merely a couple of decades off.
We so much need to have the burning desire to take action and do what God tells us in 2 Chronicles 7:14, it is our only real hope. “If My people, who are called by My name, shall humble themselves, pray, seek, crave, and require of necessity My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.”
    – 2 Chronicles 7: 14 Amplified Version

  • Al Neuman

REALLY scary stuff. Now you don’t suppose an upstanding administration and President, like our current one, would ever try to collect and use such data for political purposes–do you?
What we all need to do is get this out in the open, and demand of our Congressional representatives that they deal with this legislately, expressly forbidding the federal government from collecting ANY information on pvt. citizens without showing “probably cause”, as in the case of wiretapping.

  • thewitness42

that is probably true but it is illegal to use them in any court or touse them (the e-mails) for any thing and they know it. they just want to know what to do when they make over the world in their imiganiation Remember what Scripture says when you see all of these things happening ,:look up fofr your redemption is right at the doors” and DDONT FORGET PRAY ALWAYS FOR THOSE IN POWER SO WE CAN LIVE IN PEACE

  • aclay777

Well, I hope they are reading mine for something other than trying to find out I don’t break law, but “they” do. And that I have the name of the identity thief that stold near 2 Million dollars and the cop that helped them, so let’s hope that reading “my” e-mail and even my phone conversations that justice will be done, please, read on AND ACT.

  • Molly Walsh

Actually~ thewitness42 ~ It is VERY possible for the government to use your Emails/Posts on Facebook/Comments on articles, against you. Obama has strengthened the Patriot Act so that you can be arrested and held INDEFFINATELY if the authorities think you MIGHT commit a crime.
President Barack Obama, a man who presides over a Patriot Act on steroids. A man who claims the right to arrest you without warrants, detain you without trial, and, if he feels like it, personally order your assassination without judicial or congressional oversight of any kind. It’s one of the reasons I despise him.

  • NotNeeded

What annoys me is that I am NOT a US citizen, I do NOT vote there, but I bet emails from me, probably to me as well, are sitting in their data banks.

They have no business sticking their nose into foreigners info.. mind you, the US is great at screwing with the world aren’t they? -_-

    • vj

I agree with you that emails should be private. However, as a foreigner I would expect you to be less verbal about our wonderful country. Perhaps you should concentrate on the problems in your own country — where ever that may be, and while you are at it, you may want to ask America to stop sending money and aid to your country as I am sure we do, and start taking care of yourselves.
