The Family Affair

Anyone who has a younger brother will know what I mean. There are rules about dealing with younger brothers. They spend most of their time aggravating you, embarrassing you or otherwise making your life more difficult than it probably needs to be. My own younger brother (God bless the big oaf) has made a career out of making me roll my eyes. I look the other way because he’s so handy when I need to reach stuff on the higher shelves or need someone to lift something heavy while I drink beer. In return for putting up with the endless shenanigans our wayward brothers visit upon us, we get to smack them around a bit. Through it all, they’re our brothers.

And yet, at some point we all have to face the fact that our wee sibs have grown too large to either shove around or shelter. To be sure, when their need is desperate, we’ll be there. But sometimes, when they pick a fight they might lose, we have to step back and let them lose it. We can’t always bail them out when they go wrong; and we have learned how well bailouts generally work.

Hence, it’s with a heavy heart that I must say: Israel needs to stand alone. I understand the value of maintaining friendly ties with the lone legitimate republic in the Mideast. But there is a wide gulf between backing up an ally and diving in front of bullets on their behalf every time some hopped-up Haji decides to take a shot at them. The Islamofascist tide sweeping across the dustier parts of the world — a revolution hailed by both sides in Washington as a bold step forward — is growing. Iran is clearly pursuing nuclear weapons capability. Two different breeds of rabid dogs are fighting over Syria. The anti-Semitic rhetoric emanating from places like Saudi Arabia (Jews drink children’s blood) and Egypt (reports indicate they’ve actually begun crucifying people) is more disturbing than a New Black Panther Party rally. The Russians and Communist Chinese are backing — well — both sides, and we are countering their gambit by backing — well — both sides.

Now Israel is lacing up its gloves again, a fact amply explained in Brandon Smith’s Syria And Iran Dominos Lead To World War. These scrappers have been circling each other since 1947. In fact, some iteration of this card has been on the schedule for the better part of 5 millenia. Israel has dropped the Islamofascists to the canvas more often than not, but the sons of Muhammad have bloodied their Abrahamic cousins a few times. The Israelis will never cede their right to exist. Their opponents believe Jews — hence, Israel — are the human equivalent of some virulent disease. They don’t want to fight; they have to fight. And that’s where our problems start. We are treaty-bound to assist Israel in its own defense. And we hold up our end quite nicely — to the tune of billions of dollars annually.

The reality of the situation is this: At some point, Israel and their neighbors are going to tangle. The Israelis are certainly up to par in that department — a fact they have proven simply by remaining in existence despite the none-too-subtle promises of extermination from and by every Tariq, Dakhil and Hakim. And the wars of decades past against Tariq’s, Dakhil’s and Hakim’s grandfathers serve to remind that a frontal assault is a fool’s errand. For that matter, a surprise attack will probably flop like Joe Biden addressing a Mensa conference. And the threat of American involvement will loom large as long as the Islamofascists can stay on their feet.

Even a proxy war between Israel and some combination of Syria (or whatever’s left of it), Iran, Egypt and the various terrorist groups operating in the area will tax our resources as we prop up the Israelis against the Chicom- and Russian-backed jihadis. Should Obama decide to pretend he’s a wartime leader while simultaneously threatening to slash our defense budget, the cost will escalate from money to lives. That’s not a cost we can readily absorb.

Israel is our geopolitical little brother. It exasperates us, even occasionally steals from us. We shield Israel, coddle Israel and occasionally stand to defend Israel. But we’ve already done enough. If the situation reaches dire straits, we’ll indubitably step in. Until then, let Israel step out on its own.
