The Courage Of The Minute Men

April 14, 2011 by

In the early morning hours of April 19, 1775, about 700 British regular troops began a march toward Concord. Their goal: Round up weapons and gunpowder stored there by rebel colonists and arrest any rebel leaders they find, particularly John Hancock and Samuel Adams.

Around 1 a.m. Paul Revere arrived and informed Lexington’s captain of the militia, John Parker, that British troops were on their way. Parker called for his Minute Men and 77 arrived at the town’s green. After learning from Parker that the best-trained and best-equipped troops Britain had were on their way, the Minute Men voted to disband, lie low and do nothing to provoke the British.

Upon learning from Revere of the British march, Hancock grabbed a pistol and started to join the Minute Men. But Adams persuaded him that their capture by the British would be a major coup for Great Britain and huge loss for the rebel cause. Reluctantly, he relented. However, about four hours later, after learning the Minute Men had dispersed, Hancock met with Parker and the Minute Men who remained on the green. Shortly thereafter the drum was sounded and the Minute Men reassembled.

Hancock and Adams climbed into a chaise to leave the area just as British troops arrived. With orders to capture and hold two bridges leading into Concord and the knowledge that Revere was spreading word of their mission, the British commanders had no intention of engaging the Minute Men on the Lexington green. And Parker had ordered his men to let the British march by and not molest them unless they acted first.

As British troops marched in quick-time past the green, cursing the rebels all the while, British Major John Pitcairn told the Minute Men, “Disperse ye villains, ye rebels! Disperse! Lay down your arms! Why don’t you lay down your arms and disperse?”

After standing fast as most of the British troops passed and defying the British call to lay down their arms, Parker told his men to disband. Some began to walk away, carrying their muskets with them, and it seemed as if the crisis would pass without incident. But someone—no one was sure who but it was thought to have come from a nearby tavern or hedge—fired a shot and all hell broke loose.

Upon hearing the gunfire as the chaise rode away, Adams told Hancock, “Oh, what a glorious morning is this.” Seeing that Hancock mistook his meaning, for it was dawning a nice spring morning, Adams said, “I mean, what a glorious morning for America.”

Back on the Lexington green it was anything but. One of the Minute Men, Jonas Parker, who had vowed to never run from British guns, fell from a musket ball. He tried to fire from the ground but was bayoneted where he lay. The Minute Men fled the green and the British fired into their backs. When the smoke cleared, eight Minute Men lay dead on the green.

Shortly after 1 a.m., Samuel Prescott arrived in Concord and gave word of the British march. Bells in the town began to ring and the Concord Minute Men began to gather at Wright’s tavern. As day broke a messenger arrived from Lexington telling of gunfire on the green, but he was unsure whether the British had fired only powder as a warning, or if they were actually shooting.

About 250 men of the militia decided to carry the battle to the British and began marching east toward Lexington. After they had traveled about a mile they saw the British troops coming their way and they halted, waiting until the British were about 500 yards away.

The Minute Men then did an about face and marched back toward Concord. As they neared town some of the Minute Men were ordered to command a high ridge to deny it to the British and the rest debated what to do next. The Reverend William Emerson said, “Let us stand our ground. If we die, let us die here.”

But the Minute Men weren’t quite ready for battle and they faded back to see what the British would do. The British troops secured the bridges and then began to spread out in search of weapons and rebel leaders.

The troops burned what weapons they found and also cut down the town’s Liberty Pole and threw it onto the fire. Seeing the smoke from the bonfire over the hill, one of Concord’s volunteers asked if they were going to sit back and watch while the British burned the town to the ground.

They were told to get ready to move, but not fire until fired upon and then fire as fast as possible. They marched toward the bridges.

As the Minute Men approached the bridge, British Captain Walter-Sloan Laurie told his men to remove the bridges’ planks to make them unusable, but the Minute Men told them to stop and the British troops complied. Laurie ordered his troops into formation for street fighting, a tactic designed for fighting in narrow roads and alleys surrounded by buildings, not out in the open.

As the distance between the two armies narrowed, once again a musket went off without the order to fire being given, and the battle commenced. The Minute Men fired as rapidly as possible and advanced, driving the British off the bridge. The British troops broke and ran to the center of town.

British commanders regained order and collected their troops, but they were soon surrounded by Minute Men, whose ranks had swelled once the firing began. The order was given for the British to withdraw from Concord and the march back began.

Minute Men, hiding behind houses, barns, fences and trees, harassed the British as they retreated.

Back in Lexington, after the dead were removed from the green, Captain Parker reassembled his men, along with some newly arrived volunteers, and began to march toward Concord. Hearing the sound of the British retreat coming his way, Parker ordered his volunteers to take cover.

The British troops ran headlong into the Lexington volunteers seeking to avenge their fallen comrades. The British had no idea how many troops were facing them, but the shooting was intense. Before long, the British again broke and ran.

In Lexington, British officers got in front of their troops and again got them into order. They began a retreat toward Boston. They whole way Minute Men harassed the retreating British ranks.

When the day was done, 49 Americans were dead, 39 were wounded and five were missing. Of the vaunted British army, 73 were dead, 74 were wounded and 26 were missing. Against overwhelming odds, American volunteers had defeated troops from the mightiest army in the world.

After the fighting was over, Dr. Joseph Warren, who had become something of hero for his actions treating wounded Minute Men as the battle raged around him, put out a call for volunteers:

“Our all is at stake. Death and devastation are the instant consequences of delay. Every moment is infinitely precious. An hour lost may deluge your country in blood and entail perpetual slavery upon the few of your prosperity who may survive the carnage.”

Thousands of volunteers arrived for the cause. Thus began the war for American independence.

Now we have a new war for independence. It’s a war to make us independent from the slavery of the debt burden put on us by the Federal Reserve and the actions of the elected elites. It’s a war that will require the courage exhibited by the Minute Men on April 19.

It’s going to require sacrifice and it’s going to be difficult. But it’s obvious from the most recent budget deal that Congress still doesn’t get it. The plutocrats are crowing about cutting $38 billion from the budget as the deficit grew by $58 billion in the days they debated the cuts.

It’s time and past time to get to work contacting your representative in Congress to tell him or her that things have to change, that government has to be cut, that the Constitution  has to be adhered to. Remind him or her that an election is coming soon, and you are watching and taking notes.

Undoing 100 years of damage is going to be difficult. It’s going to require a new way of thinking about the role of government. It’s going to require commitment and courage.

Do you have the commitment and courage of the Minute Men?

No righteous man desires revolution in the hopes of gaining freedom.
Yet freedom demands it of the reluctant when faced with tyranny.

How is it that we have come to this point where foreign invaders and accompanying criminals occupy our nations capital? Why is it that the illegal hordes are allowed to swamp our borders unopposed? How can it be that our present speaker of the house in charge of restoration is a weeping weakling?

    • Lewis Munn

Because that is what our schools produce now. They want weepers, not those who will stand for the right!

And the sheeple vote them in in response to the propaganda.

  • Robert W.

‘I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend
the Constitution of the United States against all enemies,
foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance
to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any
mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well
and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am
about to enter: So help me God.’

It is time to remind them of the oath they took.

    • Lewis Munn

Did they actually take it? Or did they fake it?

I see NO penalties anymore for oath-breakers. I do see them getting rich!

  • John E.

We are in this mess because we started and ran two wars (for better or worse, it does not matter in this discussion) and for the first time in our country’s history, instead of budgeting for them, actually reduced taxes. Unimaginable to true conservatives. We had 8 years of watching the debt pile on and doing nothing. Now, in the midst of 10% unemployment, when we should have funds available to fund infrastructure projects to jump start our econemy and reemploy our middle class, my fellow citizens have been asked to extend the Bush tax cuts and better yet, by some, make them permanent. Something even the Republican Party said was impractical when they enacted it. Cutting spending will never reduce our trillions in debt. The current Republican proposal even states, their proposal, if enacted, does not expect to see real debt reductions for 75 years! When you are looking for an honest politician, look for the one who tells the truth – that only by repealing much of the Bush tax cuts, along with spending restrictions, can we expect to reduce our massive debt. I am a conservative and I insist on an honesty I have not been seeing. Honesty is the only thing that can save our country and it is in very short supply these days!

    • Nail Buster

Raise Taxes. Do any of you think for one minute if they raise taxes they will use ANY of the extra money to retire ANY OF THE MSASSIVE DEBT? i BET THAT THEY WILL ONLY FIND A NEW rat hole to squander it. These people do not have a clue were money comes from, and seem to not care. Watch out America the tinny step from Socialisum to Commie is very tiny. When you go to the grocery store and the shelves are empty because the dumbos in Washington have totaly wrecked every industry with their over regulations it will be too late. Look at the oil industry who can not drill in our (their-Gov) country but we give Bazerial 2 billion for them to drill, smart move? We have two more years of this commie president and I wonder what will be left of this once great country?

      • Lewis Munn

We are paying for how we voted. We are paying for dumbing down our education so people do not know what made us a great nation.

Actions, and lack of actions, have consequences. But even that is no longer taught to our kids!

Do you suppose we will ever learn? Or will we keep forgetting that “there is a way that seems right to men, but the end thereof is destruction.”

        • Lomax

We need to get rid of income tax and replace it with a national sales tax of about 5% with an absolute cap of 10%. We also need to reduce Government. I mean to get rid of entire agencies and departments, such as IRS, EPA, Education, Dept. of Interior, National Park Service and the National Parks, which were stolen from the states. That land should go back to the states that they are in. There are many such agencies and departments that need to go. Also, they need to fire about 1/3 of all the Government employs and to reduce all Government salaries by about 30% to bring them in line with the private sector. Spending should be reduced by about 50% so that we can generate a surplus to be used to pay off this stupid debt. We need to start paying it off now. This crap of saying we will do something ten years down the road is crap. It won’t happen. We need to start doing it now. This latest budget deal is not a beginning. It is a ruse to make us think something has been done when it has not.

    • Chuck Reitz

      Sir;
Raising taxes is never the honest, desirable course. While it is true that the vast majority of the tax burden is employed on people making 100,000.00, a tak increase never fails to affect the middle class and below level of income earners. No, the taxes must be cut, the spending stop and the vast entitlements done away with. Billions are being spent on grants, arts, items never intended to be provided under the Constitution. Nowhere does it allow anyone to take from one group and give to another. Get rid of the freeloaders, cut the expense of government by cutting the days the Congress conducts business, disband all the Federal Agencies, we don’t need them.

It is estimated that about 80% of the laws on the books right now, are un-constitutional. I venture to say it is about 90%. Get rid of them.

  • wandamurline

Everyone says that the Bush tax cuts are for the rich…maybe, but I and my husband own a 230 acre farm/ranch that we sweated blood to purchase and pay for. He is retired military and receives a small retirement check and we both get a small social security check…I would not consider myself rich…but comfortable as we had put away the money we received from the sale of our business for retirement. This year, 23 years of growing, we sold the timber on about 100 acres. It is considered a capital gain because of the length of time for it to produce. We, then had to used all but about 39,000 for repair work after the logging…road damage, bridge damage, fence cleaning (dozer work is expensive), and had it not been for the Bush tax cuts, we would have owed over $6,000 in taxes. So, people really sould look at these tax cuts…the Demorats are lying…it does help the middle class…not to mention that once the Bush tax cuts are gone, when you die, if you have anything like us having this ranch, our kids will pay through the nose the death tax on something that the taxes have been paid when we purchased it many, many years ago. Don’t be fooled by the rhetoric, the Bush tax cuts do help the middle class. What we need is a fair tax and stop the loopholes in the tax code that protects the rich…prime example…GE…made zillions and paid not one cent…and keep in mind that the so-called rich pay 56% of all taxes collected, while the rest of us pay about 24%…in addition, they are the ones who provide jobs. Try to see the whole picture…defund the IRS and install a fair tax…then everyne pays the same amount no matter what you make according to your income…no more loopholes.

    • DGKNJ

Well said. The fed govt spent less than 2 trillion in 2000, now at 3.6 trillion, not counting any funny accounting. They act like it’s their God given right to allow you to keep the reward of your labor.

      • Lewis Munn

Don’t you mean they act like it is their right and responsibility to take away the fruits of your labor, and spend it on trash?

  • Steve

Fact is: the CBO just released a report, yesterday, that the spending cuts will only total 353 million! The whole thing is a sham. We need to contact our Representatives and tell them to vote NO! on this con game.

Shut the government down! Let us get on with it. Why stand we here idle.
They want a WAR. Let’s give it to them. Call your Reps and tell them to vote no on this idiocy. SHUT IT DOWN _ NOW!!!

    • DGKNJ

I’m kinda looking forward to it.

  • Lostwages

I for one, will not wait for tyrants to come to my door to take my “arms”, before I will start to do battle! This would be the final bridge crossed by our elected “double crossing” government officials. The time to put an end to the treasonous actions taking place is now, before that final bridge is crossed and we are left with no choice but to spill our blood. The pen is mightier than the sword! So start using it! We need to impeach and prosecute those amongst our leadership that oppose our constitution. We need to replace those that hold “fear” to be greater than the call to “free us” of that opposition. As for the rest, they can stand with us or stand in front of us! The choice is theirs!

  • ONTIME

These types of American History stories have to be repeated continually and often, the public schools are negligent and the error of their ways is making a large mark on our leadership. If we are to continue to raise those of honor and courage we must let the nations kids see, hear and read about those before them and what heroes they were.

    • Lewis Munn

But those in charge don’t want kids to see heroism of the past. More important to make everybody “gay”!

And so many vote in those who want to have us simple and gay and having fun, and not be concerned with consequences!

Where are those who raise the cries? Fired. Under court orders for silence. Fighting off hoodlums sent by those in power. Having their rights to defensive weapons taken away.

      Who will help?

      • iowaheretic

Nobody is trying to make anybody gay! It is more like christians trying to make everybody else christian. Or do you get the uncontrolable urge to turn gay any time you see a gay person? If you don’t, then why do you think anybody else would want to? Maybe people just want to be treated like human beings….just like you do for whatever you believe in.

Why are we still in Libya? Obama’s war! He put us there without our approval! But no one in Congress is doing anything about it! What are we waiting for? The next move is ours, a constitutional lawyer has drawn up impeachment documents and is passing them around on the hill. Call and write to push the impeachment through! Obama shows more respect to the UN than he does the congress of the United States of America! That you and me folks! This continuing disrespect for us and our constitution must stop now! Get mad, get a pen, and take action!

Well, I wrote mine! Anybody else or are you all couch quarterbacks?

Message Text: Dear Congressman; Fact is: “the CBO just released a report, yesterday, that the spending cuts will only total 353 million!” I must state that I am less than impressed with the Republican Party right now! We had Obama by the short hairs! He stated “he would not pay the military if there was a government shut down!” So what did we do with this bargaining tool? Not a darn thing! We gave up Obama Care, we gave in to the killing of babies and what did we get in return? Not a darn thing! We went from 100 billion to 353 million in cuts and what did we get? Not a darn thing! So, last but not lest, how are you planning to vote on this “not as promised” budget sham? I can only hope you can support a “NO” vote! After the way the Dems. screwed us over when they ran both the house and the senate, with their arrogant attitudes and now we are going to continue down that same path! This is pathetic! Please let House Speaker Boehner know that heads will roll over this come election time! Either get behind the people or plan to leave office next time you’re up for election Mr. Speaker! This is totally unacceptable!

    • Lostwages

      Letter 2; Quote is from Congressman McClintock’s letter to President Obama;
      Message Text: Dear Congressman;
“With all due respect, I can only conclude that your order to United States Armed Forces to attack the nation of Libya on March 19, 2011 is in direct violation of the War Powers Resolution and constitutes a usurpation of Constitutional powers clearly and solely vested in the United States Congress and is accordingly unlawful and unconstitutional.”

This being the case, Why are we still bombing Libya? Why is Obama free to run this private war of his? I know of a constitutional lawyer that has drawn up impeachment papers on Obama and is passing them around on the hill. Obama has more respect for the UN than he does for the people, the congress and the constitution combined! It is time to ACT! We can not allow this oppression of our rights and laws to continue! Please help and stand up for America and our constitution! Support the impeachment of Obama!

Unfortunately, no sitting president has ever paid more than lip service to the so called ‘war powers act.’ The president is indeed the commander in chief of the military, he has the right to order attacks.
What we must demand now, as loyal citizens of the Republic, is why in all the Founders’ worst Nightmares are we involved in three conflicts with not one iota of reward or national interest involved? Why must we maintain permanent overseas military bases in more than 120 countries? Why are we still occupying military bases in Europe? Why do we put up with that den of thieves in Manhattan, the UN? Why are we paying out our national treasure to foreign banks when it was assumed by we the people that the rescue funds were to prevent our institutions from insolvency and our economy’s (GDP) from ruin? Why do we have our representatives in DC thumbing their noses at us, the people they supposedly represent? Why do we allow them to continue counterfeiting with paper money when the constitution explicitly gives them only the power to mint ‘real’ money from silver and gold?
As I look around, simply amazed at the speed of this once great nation’s decline and financial ruin, the only people that we can blame are ‘we the people’. We have allowed this to happen, by voting in the congressman over and over even though they cease to represent us fairly and honestly. We allowed them to accede to the UN, bowing down to them as surely as Comrade Obama bowed to the Saudi King. We blithely went along with their plan to inflate first a dot com bubble and then a housing bubble. We allowed the regulators to turn a blind eye to Bernie Madoff and a horde of banksters just as bad if not worse. We forgot that we are the owners of the legacy passed down from the Founders and washed with the blood of thouysands of our young men and we slept. We slept and aqllowed all these things to happen to the greatest nation that there ever was, and now we wake and weep, for the ruin is written in the financial double and triple dealings of the liars, cheats and thieves who occupy their ‘thrones of office’ down in DC.
There is not space nor time enough here to say all that could be said, but it should be clear to you all that in the end when asked ‘whose fault was it?’ when America falls, the only answer that can be truthfully told is, ours.

  • WendelFl

Could be that even though their was a movement back to conservative values, that the entrenched career Republicans are back in power and intend to do nothing. There should be a fight over these principles now. Sooner not later. There needs to be another march on Washington.
The country as we know it is at stake. “Is peace so sweet as to keep it at the price of liberty?” Paraphrasing a famous cry from the war for Independence. Patrick Henry was right: “Forbid it almighty God. But as for me give me liberty or give me death”. I think it is time.

  • American Conserative

AMERICA “IN THE HANDS OF AN ANGRY GOD”. America is at War with GOD!

If you read Edwards “SINNERS IN THE HANDS OF AN ANGRY GOD” and read, watch, listen to what the three branches of the Federal Government and “we the people” have been doing for over a generation in America then you can see why America is in the hands of an angry GOD!

Compare the actions of America to GOD’s Ten Commandments – what do you see? I see the Judgment hand of Almighty GOD on America. Will the LORD GOD allow America to survive, perhaps – perhaps not. The road America is on appears to be going down, down, down to the grave.

We as a nation have mocked GOD Almighty far far too long. What saith GOD in his scriptures – long suffering, slow to anger, will not be mocked – calling good evil and evil good, better to have a mill stone hung around the neck and tossed into the depth of the sea than to harm (abort) a child. The three branches of the Federal Government with the approval of the electorate have put America at war with GOD. Pay day has been creeping upon us – GOD allows it to rains on the just and the unjust.

Politics and politicians can not save America from what is comeing upon us from the hand of GOD. The stinch of America’s sins have risen into the nose of God for so long that the signs of the times GOD spoke about are upon America – we may have one year or seven!

GOD the Father has the last word – seek the LORD JESUS CHRIST while he may be found and repent, believe and be saved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Truth hurts, and a soft, selfish, evil people will reject it.

The battle we face is between those who take and their chosen recipients and those who are getting tired of having their freedom and money taken not to mention the huge piles of debt that they will have to repay. Vote the clowns out of office.

  • RJ

I have said it before and I will say it again, if you do not exercise your privilege to vote, not a right to vote, then you will lose the privilege to vote. If you do not vote then do not complain, just keep your mouths shut you do not have any right to complain. Please for the sake of our great country, use your common sense and vote. Please write your elected officals in Washington DC and let them know how unstatisfied your are with the way they are giving our country away. And if needs be we the people will, I repete we the people will if need be take up arms and handle the problem ourselves. I really do think that these sobs in Congress and the House think we the people are a bunch of iditos and will not do anything, come on people let show them that they are completely wrong!!!!

  • http://www.tomblairea.com Thomas Avery Blair

I for one no longer believe that our votes even really count anymore. Corporate America dictates who will run for national elective office and funds them both in their political banners as either Republican or Democrat. Vote a mandate and see it ignored.
Pay a tax without protest that counts and see your wealth further eroded through further taxation and inflation (itself a tax by design).

Sadly, I’m afraid that the true statesmen (and stateswomen) will never again be presented to this nation for elective office. We have never lived in a democracy, we once lived in a republic, but today we live in an oligarchy…and the silent majority remains prudently silent as the last vestiges of what America once stood for
continues to degrade into a damaged U S Constitution that has been ignored and gutted for so long by so many that there remains serious doubt that the USA will still even exist as a sovereign nation until the November 2012 elections.

We would, as a nation, today rather watch “reality shows” than live in reality.

I intend that me and mine will survive…other than that, I can agree to nothing more.

    Respectfully submitted,

    Thomas Avery Blair EA
