Terrorists ‘Like’ Social Networks

A new report by the University of Haifa says that terrorist activity is increasingly moving to the Internet as groups designated as terrorist organizations use forms of social media to convey messages and gain supporters.

Professor Gabriel Weimann spent 10 years conducting a study of encoded and public Internet sites of international terror organizations, groups supporting these organizations, forums, video clips and other information relating to global terrorism.

“Today, about 90% of organized terrorism on the Internet is being carried out through the social media. By using these tools, the organizations are able to be active in recruiting new friends without geographical limitations,” he said.

Designated terror groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas have embraced not only the social networking aspects of these sites, but also use them for surveillance. There are reports that Hezbollah has searched for material on the Israeli army’s Facebook activity using social networks.

The networks are also often routinely used for terrorists to share “tricks of the trade” with one another. According to the report, the following post could be found on Hamas’s military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades’, social profile page: “I have a kilogram of acetone. I want to know how to make an explosive with it to blow up a military jeep.”

More excuses to try and control the Internet! TOO MUCH TRUTH is available to the public via the internet and that PISSES those who are trying to completely control us, by using FEAR , as they always do!! IF we lose free use of the Internet we are in SERIOUS TROUBLE!!! The 1%’ers OWN and control ALL major media outlets EXCEPT the INTERNET!!! We seem to forget it was the USA WHO created AL-QUAIDA in the 1st place to use in Afghanistan’s in the war with Russia a few years ago!! They sure are a convenient way of keeping their “WAR MACHINE” going, aren’t they!!!?? Funny that the US intelligence could tell via satelite (over 40 years ago) not only who was playing a round of golf anywhere in the world, for example, but what kind of golf ball they were using. Now over 40 years later and unbelievable advances in technologies, and the US could NOT find Osama Bin Laden! That sure was convenient in order to continue “fighting” terrorists!

The government will continue to have the internet censored for people speaking out against their policies and some will be on the domestic terrorist list in 2012. I feel to remain silent amounts to treason when our country is slowly being changed to a Socialist state and a police state.Obama said the internet was very influenc1al with his becoming president. the same method he used to get out the word about his Yes! We can should be the same method we use to make sure he isn’t in the White House after 2012.To say Islam is not a present danger in America would be absurd. So is Communism and Socialism.more people need to read the Planks of the Communist Manifesto, our Constitution and about Saul Alinsky and how Obama is using his methods to bring America down. google Saul Alinsky.

Anything can be used for good … or bad. However, because it can be used for bad, it doesn’t mean that all should be banned or controlled. It isn’t that hard for them to monitor the terrorists. I suspect many are doing that right now. It is a tool to use to find them instead of silencing them. The real problem is NOT the terrorists as far as the government is concerned. It is those like most of us here that disagree with them and are willing to tell what is going on. That is what they really fear.

Agreed. The government is much more afraid of its own citizens than it ever will be of the terrorists.
