Switzerland To Introduce Gold Coins Again?

Switzerland To Introduce Gold Coins Again?

Switzerland has always been among the countries with the highest gold reserves. Despite reducing its reserves in the past two decades, Switzerland still has the highest gold holdings per capita and its currency, the Swiss franc, has been among the top-performing currencies in recent years. The strength of the currency has many reasons, but despite the vast amount of gold reserves that Switzerland owns, even the Swiss franc is just a paper (fiat) currency.

In a previous article, I wrote about the many factors influencing the value of currencies. Today, all currencies are basically fiat currencies, so their relative value is determined by factors such as political stability and competitiveness of the domestic economy, just to name a few. However, in a time like today when many big governments are dealing with record amounts of debt, the incentive to “print” money is certainly a lot bigger.

The world’s two largest reserve currencies, the U.S. dollar and the euro, are currently in a process of structural devaluation, which has caused these currencies to fall significantly in value. More and more people in the U.S. and Europe would want to have a new type of gold standard, which would protect the purchasing power of their savings and incomes. This is very understandable, since a forced currency devaluation acts like an extra tax on every citizen.

In light of this, it seems surprising that in a country like Switzerland that has such a strong currency, a parliament initiative has been made that seeks to set up a new Swiss gold franc as a dual currency system. I personally think a return to a worldwide gold standard is unrealistic, but when I heard about the gold franc idea, I thought that would be a very interesting alternative. That’s why I would like to tell you how the gold franc dual currency system would work.

The plan is that private institutes/banks, with the permission from the Swiss government, would issue gold coins, so-called gold francs. Each coin would contain a core with a fixed amount of real physical gold; the rest of the coin would be made from a cheaper type of metal. For example, a 500 Swiss franc coin would contain 50 grams of real gold. With today’s gold prices, this would be worth approximately 2,000 Swiss francs (fiat currency).

The plan would be to also issue coins with smaller nominal values that have a lower gold content. The purpose of this would be to give everybody a cheap and easy way to purchase gold. Also, these coins would be easily tradable. The idea is not to have these new coins introduced as a replacement of the existing coins but as an alternative to the fiat currency Swiss franc, therefore introducing a dual currency system.

Another interesting point is that these gold coins would need to be issued by private firms/banks that have a license from the Swiss government. The gold needed to produce these coins would need to be bought on the open market by these private issuers.

What is also interesting about the idea is that this new gold currency would be independent from the Swiss National Bank. The reason for this is that the Swiss National Bank has recently come under a lot of pressure because of its investment strategy. Switzerland’s economy is heavily dependent on exports, which is why the recent Swiss franc strength is such a heavy burden for the domestic economy. In an attempt to weaken the currency and try to stop further appreciation, the Swiss National Bank sold huge amounts of its own currency against the euro. This strategy is highly problematic and led to an intense political discussion of what the role of a central bank should really be. But one thing is already clear, by investing heavily in the euro, the Swiss National Bank has accumulated giant losses. And with the outlook for the euro being more uncertain than ever, the chances that the central bank can recuperate these losses are very small.

The Swiss idea of introducing a gold currency comes at a time when more and more people are calling for a return to the gold standard, which would be a radical change from today’s system of fiat currencies. In my view and despite having some sympathy for this idea, this is a very unlikely scenario today. The old gold standard was brought down by politicians, and I don’t think politicians have any interest in reintroducing the gold standard. However, I think ideas like the Swiss gold currency system show that gold and other precious metals are becoming a much more important investment class, and many investors today already look at gold as a currency. Also, the fact that central banks worldwide have recently become net buyers of gold shows that there is renewed interest for precious metals.

Despite the fact that there has been a lot written about precious metals recently and the fact that these metals have shown such a strong performance, I think we are only in the early phase of a long-term upward trend for these metals.

I think it would really be interesting to have a gold franc in Switzerland that could be used as a legal tender, but I have my doubts that we will ever get it. So many people worldwide will seek to invest money in assets that are truly protecting the purchasing power of their money, and this will continue to create an enormous demand for precious metals. Ben Bernanke was recently questioned by Congress about the role of gold and why people buy gold. His answer was that they buy it as protection against tail risk: really, really bad outcomes. Well, Mr. Bernanke, maybe the chances of getting these really bad outcomes are bigger that what you may think.

How are we going to defend our gold, when the gun-grabbing Liberals sign this treaty?

Very nice article. How are we going to defend our dollars when someone wants to devalue the dollar? You can’t buy much when the dollar is loosing its value. If they keep raising the debt ceiling, there will not be much left to pay “Social Security and Military benefits”, and the SYSTEM MAY COLLAPSE SOONER.

          Stop Agenda 21.

America does not need much from the rest of the world, we have all the resources available to us to be totally independent, both in food production, and energy production, as well as manufacturing and fresh water.

We dont need them, they need our resources, they are running out, we are not.

We’re going to have to lean hard on the RINO John McCain. Gunowners gives him a C- on his gun record. He has been mushy about our gun rights ever since I can remember.
        Gunowner Senator ratings:

        • Tom Anderson

Who gives a dam about McCain’s gun record – when his Admiral Daddy was complicit in the coverup of the USS Liberty massacre of our Sailors!

I sure smell a lot of rotten Mossad like smell around McCain – why else would his Dad be excusing the murder of our troops?

Oh yeah some Mossad lovin commie will take offense at this and say it was all a terrible accident. LBJ calling those fighter jets back TWICE to the carrier was NOT an accident – and McCain wanted that ship on the bottom and all of our sailors dead.

It is just like the GOP to pick someone who is closely associated with the murder of our troops – TOTAL HYPOCRITES – and most military guys fall for this malarkey.

          McCain = Mossad + Obama + CIA

          Simple math.

Easy for you to say. Maybe, maybe not, who knows? Can you prove it?
Meanwhile the disarming of our nation is a very real possibility, and if you think they’re willing to sacrifice people for their gains now, imagine what it will get like when the citizens are completely disarmed?

Some central bankers get it, DaveH. You (central bankers, i. e.) can screw the world just so many times before it catches up with you. Remember that OUR central bankers want us to believe that gold is a barbaric relic, and that dollars are stronger and safer than gold.
As for Ben the Boob, if I had even one share in Bernanke, Inc., I’d sell it so fast that Ben would think someone had slipped up behind him and given him an atomic wedgy (maybe some already has, and that’s why he has his head stuck up that ‘special place’ and can’t do his ‘job’).

    Liberals? Liberals????

A conservative GOP President was the guy who held the smoking .357 Magnum which was the shot-to-the-back-of-the-head of our GOLD BASED currency in 1971.

When you want to REALLY EFFECTIVELY DESTROY OUR US CONSTITUTION then look to the “conservatives” in the GOP.

And when Nixon unilaterally took us off the gold standard in 1971 NOT A SINGLE CONSERVATIVE raised ANY OBJECTION!!! You are a bunch of unpatriotic, constitution hating, hypocritical “conservatives”. Scratch the scum off your “conservative” surface and you find a commie liberal who would make Marx happy.

I just heard on the radio today that the GOP is agreeing to allow the US Guvmint to take up to 22.5% of the nation’s output in new taxes – - good example of the foxes guarding the henhouse – detestable hypocrites!!!

Watch Out, Ron Paul, those GOPers are going hunting for YOU and your son!

    • s c

So tell me, T, do you grow the stuff that you smoke every day, or do you have to go looking for the closest mobile entrepreneur to get it? It must be incredibly strong, as you make no more sense than the typical space cadets who haunt this website.
RMN is no idol of mine, but you’re way off base, mac. And by the way, you forgot to pin most of the blame for going off the gold standard on GB.

    • DaveH

I was talking about the gun-grabbers, Tom. Do you deny that most of the gun grabbers come from the left?

      • Tom Anderson

        Dear DaveH,

Of course, the 2nd amendment attacks almost always come from the left – - but NOT always. You may recall that GWB PROHIBITED citizens from protecting themselves by carrying firearms in National Parks – but Obama CHANGED the rule and allowed it. The GOPers are simply hypocrites!

The KEY argument is that when the GOP has had control of the Executive or Congress they have left ALL of the anti-guns rules completely intact. As I recall, the amendment says something about “shall not be infringed” – - whenever the GOP has had the levers of power they have IGNORED the anti-gun laws.

“INFRINGED” – that means no frigin licenses! The GOP are big “license” freaks!

The NRA supported the so-called “Patriot Act” 100% – they are ALL hypocrites. Who is worse? The outright enemy (left) of the traitor(GOP).

Ron & Rand Paul are the only lovers of the US Constitution yet some of that GOP slime-goop may rub off on them.

        • DaveH

You’ve been around long enough to know that I don’t rubber-stamp everything Republicans do. But I do try to put the blame where it mostly belongs — Liberals. If you’ve read enough of my comments, you know that I consider anybody who thinks Big Government is the solution to our problems to be a Liberal. That includes many (if not most) of the Republicans.

          • Tom Anderson

I suppose that we pretty much agree but I have a different view.

GWB expanded federal guvmint more than any PRIOR President in history. Isn’t THAT the definition of a “FLAMIN LIBERAL”?

If you look at the price of gold over the past 12 years (which is really just the decreasing VALUE of the US dollar) you do NOT see any difference at all between the GOP administrations or Congress and the DEMO administration of Congress. So WHO is the liberal? – - my point — ain’t no difference.

Where we disagree is that I believe that the TRAITOR (GOP) is MUCH MUCH WORSE and dangerous than the outright enemy (DEMO).

The GOP is also taking us down to perdition, just at a slower rate than the DEMOS.

Ron Paul is trying to turn the buggy around rather than continue down the same path as the GOP and DEMOS. If he is effective at starving the MIC monster he will have a terrible accident – mark my words.

          • Tom Anderson

Again, my point is that the GREATEST attack on our GOLD BASED currency was from the GOP NOT the DEMOS!!!

Yet, everyone is making out like the DEMOS are to blame – NO! The GOP is to blame!!! They were the Marxists who are responsible for this mess by taking us off the GOLD standard. The GOP are simply MARXISTS in sheeples clothing.

Once the GOP made our US Currency a FIAT currency then both parties could “have their way with it”.

          • Vicki

Tom, Many of us WERE quite vocal about GWB and know that he is more liberal than conservative. Being liberal does not mean being democrat. We HAVE noticed that there is a vast majority of democrats that are liberal but we have also noticed that many republicans act as liberals. John McCain is a good example

The really big mistake people make is to think that the battle is between left and right. The ACTUAL political battle is between 0% government and 100% government.

Most democrats and republicans seem to want more government, hence bigger government. These would be people that we consider “liberals”. Most of us here want smaller government and in particular a smaller government as described in the Constitution. We tend to think of ourselves as conservatives.

There is one political party in particular that does believe in small government and free people. But for some reason, probably our public education system, most people seem to avoid it. That party is the Libertarian party. The only party who has to date fully supported all aspects of the Constitution and not spent years/centuries trying to circumvent the limitations on government power that the Constitution requires.

          • Tom Anderson

OK, Vicki, you have convinced me.

            Where do I sign up?

          • DaveH

            First, Tom, read this:

  • C130 Gunship

Daniel Zurbrügg…..”Switzerland has always been among the countries with the highest gold reserves.” I guess it’s a benefit from financing the NAZI’s to the tune of $1.3 Trillion USD (1945 dollars) during WWII. During the war, the Swiss National Bank received $440m in gold from Nazi sources, of which $316m is estimated to have been looted-key word is ‘estimated’ only the NAZI’s and the Swiss bankers really know. Looted from conquered countries, Jews (including their teeth after extermination). Yet the Swiss banks act like nothing happened, fought relatives of dead Jews and others tooth and nail when they attempted to reclaim the looted booty after the war. Many never got back what was stolen because the claimants died before they could ever get a proper legal hearing in a Swiss court. Switzerland is a country that is beautiful, charming, but has an extremely sorted past that they have never atoned for. No doubt they still have untold hundred of millions of dollars (today’s value) of looted gold (diamonds too).

ICE agents warn Americans “to brace themselves for what’s coming”

    · By Dave Gibson, National Immigration Reform Examiner

In the wake of the recent memo from the Obama administration
which announced “prosecutorial discretion” in dealing with
illegal aliens, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents
across the country have been speaking out what many of them
    are calling a “backdoor amnesty.”

On Wednesday, ICE Union president Chris Crane told PRNewswire:
“Any American concerned about immigration needs to brace
themselves for what’s coming. This is just one of many new ICE policies in queue aimed at stopping the enforcement of U.S. immigration laws in the United States.

Unable to pass its immigration agenda through legislation, the
Administration is now implementing it through agency policy.”

Crane continued: “ICE and the Administration have excluded our
union and our agents from the entire process of developing
policies, it was all kept secret from us, we found out from the newspapers. ICE worked hand-in-hand with immigrants rights
groups, but excluded its own officers.”

Also ignored by the press, was last year’s no confidence vote
ICE agents gave Obama appointee, ICE director John Morton.
The National ICE Council represents about 7,000 agents and
support staff. Those agents, just as many American citizens are
also convinced that the new policy, which gives special preference
to illegal aliens who have a relative who has served in the
military, those who are enrolled in any education program and even those who are pregnant or nursing is simply a move from an
    unpopular president, desperate for re-election.

Crane said: “The desires of foreign nationals illegally in the
United States were the framework from which these policies were developed. The result is a means for every person here illegally
to avoid arrest or detention, as officers we will never know who
we can or cannot arrest.” Perhaps, most troubling are the “secret” orders under which ICE agents are reportedly now operating. “Our officers are already under orders not to make arrests or even talk
to foreign nationals in most cases unless another agency has
already arrested them; you won’t find that written in any public
    ICE policy,” Crane said.

Finally, this warning from the ICE Union president: “I think the writing is on the wall for every person concerned about good government and effective immigration reforms – the things
happening at ICE represent neither. We are asking everyone to
please email or call your Congressman and Senators immediately and ask them to help stop what’s happening at ICE,we desperately need your help.”

Of course, the DREAM Act and so-called Comprehensive Immigration
Reform (amnesty) have been defeated many times in Congress, due
to public outrage. However, as Obama’s poll numbers continue to
slip, he has apparently once again, decided to bypass Congress
this time in his pursuit of Latino votes.

Any move toward using gold as money is positive. All nations should be moving in that direction (I’m not holding my breath).
However, if they intend the new gold franc to circulate alongside the existing paper franc, each on a par with the other or at a fixed ratio, then they’ll find, as so many times in the past, that those who can get their hands on gold will keep it and spend their paper. “Bad money drives out good” (Gresham’s law).
The plan can work if the two currencies are NOT linked to each other, so the value of gold francs can fluctuate with the market vis a vis the paper franc.

    • DaveH

A gold-linked currency greatly hampers Politicians’ abilities to spend freely. So don’t expect them to embrace such a thing willingly.

  • Gerard Lamarche

I must correct what C130 Gunship just said concerning Swiss banks :

Swiss banks have the obligation to keep client records about forever.
In order to assess the Jewish assets deposited in Swiss banks before WW2, an international / US official (very costly) enquiry has been done a few years ago. They found all the unclaimed assets left in Swiss banks, and these were afterwards disposed of in favor of their beneficial owners, heirs,or associations representing them. Actually, these amounts were relatively small compared to the huge amounts of unclaimed Jewish money deposited with banks of the State of New York.

These New York banks were legally authorized to destroy absentee clients records after only a few years (10 years, I think).
The records were actually detroyed and these huge unclaimed Jewish funds contributed to fat windfall profits for these banks in the years following WW2.

Sorry for C130 Gunship, the more you dig, the more you find.
    Keep on digging.

    • C130 Gunship

Germard Lamarche……While some folks got some compensation for their looted assets, the vast majority didn’t because they were murdered, and their relatives were murdered or didn’t have ‘proof of assets’ if they survived the war, or their relatives lived in the USA. Show me some detailed NAZI records of who’s assets and how much they stole from individuals and put in Swiss banks-the best you’ll do is read about ‘estimated’…..All the gold a other assets NAZI’s looted has NEVER been FULLY accounted for. Read on please…

On October 21, 1946 the U.S. State Department received a Top Secret report from US Treasury Agent Emerson Bigelow.[8] The report established that Bigelow received reliable information on the matter from the American Office of Strategic Services (OSS) or CIC intelligence officials of the US Army.[9] The document, referred to as the “Bigelow Report”, was declassified on December 31, 1996 and released in 1997.

The Bigelow Report asserted that in 1945, the Vatican had confiscated 350 million Swiss francs in Nazi gold for “safekeeping,” of which 150 million Swiss francs had been impounded by British authorities at the Austro-Swiss border. The report also stated that the balance of the gold was held in one of the Vatican’s numbered Swiss bank accounts. Intelligence reports, which corroborated the Bigelow Report, also suggested that more than 200 million Swiss francs, a sum largely in gold coins, were eventually transferred to Vatican City or to the Institute for Works of Religion (aka the Vatican Bank), with the assistance of Roman Catholic clergy and the Franciscan Order.

Such claims, however, are denied by the Vatican Bank. “There is no basis in reality to the [Bigelow] report”, said Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls, as reported in Time magazine. Hmmmm, wonder where the NAZI’s got that gold from…..Did it get returned to the rightful owners….HELL NO!!!

During the war Portugal, with neutral status, was one of the centres of tungsten production and sale to both Allied and Axis powers. Much of the tungsten was purchased with Nazi gold bullion, which was looted from the countries they had invaded. It is estimated that nearly 100 tons of Nazi gold were laundered through Swiss banks, with only four tons being returned at the end of the war.

During the war, Portugal was the second largest recipient of Nazi gold, after Switzerland and this came through the sale of Wolfram (as tungsten was called), with the German armaments industry nearly entirely dependent on the supplies from Spain and Portugal. Initially the Nazi trade with Portugal was in hard currency, but in 1941 the central Bank of Portugal established that much of this was counterfeit and Portuguese leader António de Oliveira Salazar demanded all further payments in gold. Hmmmm, wonder where the NAZI’s got that gold from…..Did it get returned to the rightful owners….HELL NO!!!

SO Gerard Lamarche, you keep digging…….because you’re only getting in deeper and deeper.

Sources say smack down of Obama by Supreme Court may be inevitable.

July 9, 12:03 PM Conservative Examiner Anthony G. Martin

According to sources who watch the inner
workings of the federal government, a
smack-down of Barack Obama by the U.S.
    Supreme Court may be inevitable.

Ever since Obama assumed the office of
President, critics have hammered him on a
number of Constitutional issues. Critics have
complained that much if not all of Obama’s
    major initiatives run headlong into
Constitutional roadblocks on the power of the
    federal government.

    AP Photo/Keith Srakocic).

(Chief Justice John Roberts, U.S. Supreme

Obama certainly did not help himself in the
eyes of the Court when he used the venue of
the State of the Union address early in the
year to publicly flog the Court over its ruling
that the First Amendment grants the right to
various organizations to run political ads
during the time of an election.

The tongue-lashing clearly did not sit well
with the Court, as demonstrated by Justice
Sam Alito, who publicly shook his head and
stated under his breath, ‘That’s not true,’
when Obama told a flat-out lie concerning
    the Court’s ruling.

As it has turned out, this was a watershed
moment in the relationship between the
executive and the judicial branches of the
    federal government. Obama publicly
declared war on the court, even as he
    blatantly continued to propose legislation
that flies in the face of every known
    Constitutional principle upon which this
nation has stood for over 200 years.

Obama has even identified Chief Justice
John Roberts as his number one enemy,
that is, apart from Fox News and Rush
Limbaugh. And it is no accident that the
one swing-vote on the court, Justice
    Anthony Kennedy, stated recently that
he has no intention of retiring until ‘Obama is

Apparently, the Court has had enough.
The Roberts Court has signaled, in a very
subtle manner, of course, that it intends to
address the issues about which Obama critics
have been screaming to high heaven. A
ruling against Obama on any one of these
important issues could potentially cripple the
Such a thing would be long overdue.

First, there is ObamaCare, which violates the
    Constitutional principle barring the federal
    government from forcing citizens to
purchase something. And no, this is not the
same thing as states requiring drivers to
purchase car insurance, as some of the
    intellectually-impaired claim. The
    Constitution limits FEDERAL government, not
state governments, from such things, and
further, not everyone has to drive, and thus,
a citizen could opt not to purchase car
insurance by simply deciding not to drive a
vehicle. In the ObamaCare world, however,
    no citizen can ‘opt out.’

Second, sources state that the Roberts court
    has quietly accepted information concerning
discrepancies in Obama’s history that raise
serious questions about his eligibility for the
office of President. The charge goes far
beyond the birth certificate issue. This
    information involves possible fraudulent use
of a Social Security number in Connecticut ,
while Obama was a high school student in
Hawaii. And that is only the tip of the

    Third, several cases involving possible
criminal activity, conflicts of interest, and
    pay-for-play cronyism could potentially land
many Administration officials, if not the
President himself, in hot water with the
Court. Frankly, in the years this writer has
observed politics, nothing comes close to
comparing with the rampant corruption of
this Administration, not even during the
Nixon years. Nixon and the Watergate
    conspirators look like choirboys compared
to the jokers that populate this

Fourth, the Court will eventually be forced to
rule on the dreadful decision of the Obama
DOJ to sue the state of Arizona . That, too,
could send the Obama doctrine of open
borders to an early grave, given that the
    Administration refuses to enforce federal
    law on illegal aliens.
And finally, the biggie that could potentially
send the entire house of cards tumbling in a
free-fall is the latest revelation concerning
the Obama-Holder Department of Justice and
its refusal to pursue the New Black Panther
Party. The group is caught on tape
    committing felonies by atempting to
intimidate Caucasian voters into staying away
    from the polls.

A whistle-blower who resigned from the DOJ
is now charging Holder with the deliberate
refusal to pursue cases against Blacks,
particularly those who are involved in radical
hate-groups, such as the New Black Panthers,
who have been caught on tape calling for the
murder of white people and their babies.

This one is a biggie that could send the entire
    Administration crumbling–that is, if the
Justices have the guts to draw a line in the
sand at the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Sooner this fraud Obama is out of office, his Marxist agenda reversed, the sooner America recovers from this dismal plundge into Socialism and Marxist Totalitarian, freedom killing, job killing nightmare.

Buy some gold and silver, you gonna need it.

3 metals will be needed in your scenario.

Gold. In properly stamped recognized mint marked units.

Silver. In properly stamped recognized mint marked units. US Silver coins are particularly good for that.

Lead. In those cute little brass containers.

    • unohoo

way too much imagination dude . . .

  • Perry

    Right on Vickie.
I hope to use the gold and silver rather than the lead but, as I have told folks for a while now,yo can have all the gold, silver, water and food you want but if it all goes to hell, you better be prepared to defend it both mentally and physically.

  • John

If these coins only have a small core of gold, and if it is not visible. How difficult would it be to counterfeit the coin with no gold core?

Also, how can an ordinary person tell IF there is gold present or not?

  • TML

Looks like the Swiss may lead the way on how to make it happen. Sounds promising.

  • unohoo

Sure they have the highest gold reserves, they kiped it from the Germans after the war and the Germans got it from the Jews. Truth being told, they are giveing you a gold coin worth one hundered dollars and charge you three hundred for it . . . Just another way to steal from stupid people who have too much mmoney and dont know what to do with it.

unohoo, take your own advice. You said, “way too much imagination dude . . .” What happened in 1933?

It’s “Gold Confiscation” Executive Order 6102 is an Executive Order signed on April 5, 1933, by Franklin D. Roosevelt, “forbidding the Hoarding of Gold Coin, Gold Bullion, and Gold Certificates.
